The Kit Lens is Not So Bad

Great shots. If you did not tell me the images were taken with the kit lens I would have thought you used a 24-70 L lens.

Did you do any post processing?

Dave

P.S. Here is one of my first few shots with the kit lens. I took these the first weekend I had the Drebel.

Dear Fellow Rebels,

With all the newbies and prospective buyers browsing the forums
these days, I thought it might be helpful to hear and see that the
kit lens is not so bad! Certainly you will want to add to your
lens collection over time, but the kit lens is a great lens for the
money. Here are a few images I took earlier this month to capture
the last traces of Fall Color in the landscape using the Kit Lens.

Comments, suggestions, and critiques welcome.

Happy Holidays to All,

Rudiman,

Thanks for the welcome back. I've missed my forum time for sure!

Excellent shot taken with your kit lens. You've got to admit, it is a fine lens for the money. I too like my 28-135 for everyday shooting, but the kit lens really should not collect too much dust. It is a fine lens. It is also fun to go out on a shoot6 using only this lens. You'll be pleasantly surprised at what you bring home.

Cheers,

jim

Dave S,

Thanks so much. Yes, these were shot RAW and post-processed using my routine workflow in PSCS. All of my keepers get this treatment, all the rest are sent to the recycle bin.

You have some impressive shots from the kit lens. DO you still use yours?

Cheers,

jim

Thanks,

I use the same workflow shoot in Raw and process in CS. The Kit lens is in the box as I now use my 17-40L in its place.

I especially like the top shot Jim, the colours are gorgeous. I really must try this lens for more close work, it's a side of it I've not investigated enough.

I've always said it's a smashing little lens to be included with the camera, I'm more than happy enough with it at wide angles to have no desire to spend money replacing it.

I've posted this as an example of it's capabilities several times, but it might be worth repeating here. I prepared it when someone said the kit lens wasn't sharp - it's a 1:1 pixel crop - the left frame is out of camera and totally unsharpened (developed from RAW) - the right frame is after some attention - the middle area shows the full image frame for perspective. The shots below were the finished frames from the session - the top one of which has been glossy magazine published.

Interesting compositions can make any lens look good. But the Kit is a decent lens for the price. Haven't had much opportunity to use it since the Summer holidays as I shoot mostly wildlife these days. When I first got the 300D I did use the Kit lens for close up shots of bees (had to get right up in their face) so this is a versatile lens allowing using in even close up shots as well as landscapes.

As I was posting earlier, I couldn't immediately think of which shots I'd taken with it as my 28-135 tends to sit on the camera for general purposes. Whilst I had breakfast, I remembered of course that many of my panoramas were taken with it - usually in the middle of the focal length range - 30mm-ish.

These were all taken with it - not embeded as they're large panos:

A dawn shot - I got up to go to the bathroom at the caravan we stay on in the Lake District in the summer and saw the glow of this sunrise through the glass door (about 05:45) and grabbed the camera. 1/100 @ f13 and 400ISO. We get some fabulous skies in this spot:

It was very misty this day - I took this while we had lunch

Jim,

Thanks for the compliment, I don't get many of those ;).

I didn't use the 18-55 that much on holiday (had just bought the 300D and kit as well as a 28-135IS, and had read that the kit lens wasn't that great), but the photo's I took with it all turned out well. As you say the kit lens is great value for money.
stuartd,

THese are awesome examples. Look at all that detail! What more
could one ask from a lens of less than $100 value?

Cheers,

jim
