Hi there, has anyone in this forum experienced this:

"System Error"

and the red light of the CF card stays on. It happens when I was browsing through my pictures. Even turning off the camera did not help. The only solution is to take the battery out. When restarting eveything seems to work Ok. I took some pictures afterwards whithout any problems. Any advice is welcome.

Richard, yes I had the same problem and also had a problem with very bad purple fringing and shots producing purple branches in trees(under some conditions!) As with you could not do a thing with the camera it completely froze and taking the battery out and re-inserting it was the only solution to get it going again!! Took the camera back and requested a replacement which I recieved a week later. This one seems fine but have not as yet tested all my lenses with it.Last week found a old Minolta 70-210 f4 lens in a pawn shop in Sydney they wanted $68 for it but ended up paying $50 with a bit of bargaining and might I say this lens gives SHARP perfect photos,I only wish I could share some of them with you all but I don't know how to place them on this site. I am toying with the thought of getting my own web page and placing my photos there with a link to it.

Anyway Richard and all others on this sight, from Australia,to all of you and your families, have a very Happy Christmas and a great 2005, and mate,if your camera is faulty take it back where you purchased it and ask for a replacment....Good Luck!!.......Laurie.

I've had this several times on 2 different bodies. The current body seems to lock up in flash mode using 3600hs or on camera flash in A mode when you attempt to change aperature by a couple of stops. In also seems to happen more often with the 85mm1.4 than other lenses but I have to test this more.

Quite strange but it's happened maybe 10-15 times. Only way to get camera working is to 1) turn camera off 2) take battery out 3) put battery in 4) wait for camera to initialize 5) turn camera on.

Several times, but not always, when I do this the language gets reset to japanese and/or I have to reset date and time. It's a pain for sure.

I wonder if this type of error has anything to do with errors writing or reading from the memory card? What card are you using? Do you have any others you could try?

Thanks,
Dave

You could be right Dave. It's a Sandisk 1GB ultra that I usually have in the camera. I've got some 512 sandisks and lexars that I'll experiment with. I think if you get an error it may corrupt the card somehow and if you don't reformat after the error the problem may continue to happen.

I was thinking it might be related to the 85mm lens but I'm not sure at this point. Last night I was taking alot of test shots and I could lock up the camera consistently by using flash and an aperature of 5.6. P mode rarely locked camera up with flash.

Too many variables to control however so at this point it's alot of speculation on my part.

Great camera however, and I can't wait to get these technical issues out of the way and get back to photography!
Thanks,
Dave

Thanks Dave, The purple in my first 7D was not only on the fringes I had purple branches and blobs of bright purple all over some shots, the second camera does not have this trouble even when shot with the same lenses so I could not put it down to lens problem.
I am so happy now with this replacment 7D, I think the colours it produces are beyond reproach. Ihave just started shooting with RAW and am even happier.Take care have a good Christmas and a great 2005. Laurie.

Hey all You guys,

Thanks for the info,

My Maxxum 7D has a 28-100mm Minolta D Lens. I am using a Lexar (80X) 512Mb card with it. I do not have any other card at this moment to try our, so what I think I will do is to do a format and try it again. If this don't help I will than purchase a new and ohter brand of card to check agian.

Mine lockup only accurs when I am browsing pictures and not while shooting (up till now).

Also to all you on this forum,

Have a nice Christmas and a very wonderfull 2005 for you and your whole family, greeting comming from the small sunny island of Aruba (Dutch Caribbean) If you still don't know, nort of the coast of Venezuela, yes that little dot in the sea.

Hi there, has anyone in this forum experienced this:

"System Error"

and the red light of the CF card stays on. It happens when I was
browsing through my pictures. Even turning off the camera did not
help. The only solution is to take the battery out. When restarting
eveything seems to work Ok. I took some pictures afterwards
whithout any problems. Any advice is welcome.

Richard, yes I had the same problem and also had a problem with
very bad purple fringing and shots producing purple branches in
trees(under some conditions!) As with you could not do a thing with
the camera it completely froze and taking the battery out and
re-inserting it was the only solution to get it going again!! Took
the camera back and requested a replacement which I recieved a week
later. This one seems fine but have not as yet tested all my lenses
with it.Last week found a old Minolta 70-210 f4 lens in a pawn shop
in Sydney they wanted $68 for it but ended up paying $50 with a bit
of bargaining and might I say this lens gives SHARP perfect
photos,I only wish I could share some of them with you all but I
don't know how to place them on this site. I am toying with the
thought of getting my own web page and placing my photos there with
a link to it.
Anyway Richard and all others on this sight, from Australia,to all
of you and your families, have a very Happy Christmas and a great
2005, and mate,if your camera is faulty take it back where you
purchased it and ask for a replacment....Good Luck!!.......Laurie.

Thanks Dave, The purple in my first 7D was not only on the fringes I had purple branches and blobs of bright purple all over some shots, the second camera does not have this trouble even when shot with the same lenses so I could not put it down to lens problem.
I am so happy now with this replacment 7D, I think the colours it
produces are beyond reproach. Ihave just started shooting with RAW
and am even happier.Take care have a good Christmas and a great
2005. Laurie.

i am also having problem with the 85mm 1.4 d lens. more often than not, the camera won't fire
Quite strange but it's happened maybe 10-15 times. Only way to get
camera working is to 1) turn camera off 2) take battery out 3) put
battery in 4) wait for camera to initialize 5) turn camera on.

Several times, but not always, when I do this the language gets
reset to japanese and/or I have to reset date and time. It's a pain
for sure.

I took a lot of pictures last night and today. After browsing "No
Errors"
Thanks god that it was not something that big to miss my camera for
a couple of weeks. Hopes that it will stay that way.

PS: We do not have to blame Minolta eveytime something goes wrong. :)

Thanks for the info,

My Maxxum 7D has a 28-100mm Minolta D Lens. I am using a Lexar
(80X) 512Mb card with it. I do not have any other card at this
moment to try our, so what I think I will do is to do a format and
try it again. If this don't help I will than purchase a new and
ohter brand of card to check agian.
Mine lockup only accurs when I am browsing pictures and not while
shooting (up till now).

Hi Dave,

Thanks Dave, and yes I am verry happy that it was just a little thing. I am considering to buy extra CF card but from different manufactures just in case. Any recomendations? Also I saw on this link : http://www.tamron.com/news/35mm/18200di2.asp that by summer of 2005 Tamron will be releasing a great new lens. Any comments on it?

I am a person that does not like to change lens for each shot. I think this would be my favorite lens. Just have to wait for it when it will be available.
Today I will be shooting moore pictures of my kids at my parents.
And once again, Merry Christmas for you and your whole family.

PS: Any more advice is welcome.

Richard,

I am not sure if there are any issues with the most popular CF manufacturers. From what I have read here in this forum the 7D's write/read speed isn't all that fast so it doesn't take advantage of the faster cards.

I am using a SanDisk 1G Ultra II with no problems. I also have used a std version SanDisk 512MB and 128MB versions with no problems.

As far as the new Tamoron Lens I personally would wait for reviews of the lens. I am leery of a lens that has a zoom range that large. There are tradeoffs when creating zoom lenses and this is a VERY wide range. Also, the speed of the lens f3.5-6.5 isn't all that good. Typically lens performance is poorest at the widest aperture - ie 3.5 at 18mm and 6.5 at 200mm which means to improve the sharpness of the image you will need to stop it down which means you are starting at a disadvantage right away. I know you don't like to change lenses but I would split this range into two lenses if you can afford it. Also, typically a lens that is 18-50 and one that is 70-300 are used for different subjects so you may not be changing as much as you may think you will be.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks again for the info. I will wait for a review for the lens. I am not a Pro but more a Geek-Amatuer. I do photograhy as a hobby, and once and then I will shoot; Weddings, Comunion and the like in a Church. Depending on the chance to get a good shot in a Church without beeing distrurbed by other photographers running in front of your lens, I do prefer to use large zoom lenses.

I have been using a Maxxum 7, Maxxum 9 (2), and last a Maxxum 600si untill it broke down last year. After all the years of wear the grip broke up in pieces, and it was impossible to hold it in your hand any longer. Last I saw a news of the Maxxum 7D and I kept waiting untill a couple of weeks ago and bought my new 7D toy.

Now as soon if I do get a chance to make some spare time I will try to shoot like I have never did before with my new toy. It feels great to have a new camera after quite a long time and especialy when it is a Minolta Digital one. I am wondering it there will be any Maxxum 9D in the future. Please put my name 1st on the list.
