I have just bought myself the Nikon D70. So far - Love it. At the moment i only have the kit lens but want to get a zoom lens 200 or 300mm but not looking to spend a lot of money. not at this stage anyway. I had in mind the Tamron 572D 70-300. Would appreciate others opinions on this.
Thanks.

I'd say you have 3 options

1) Nikon 70-300 G lens
2) Nikon 70-300 D ED Lens
3) Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super II

Considering that these are all slowish lenses (f4 - 5.6) compared to f2.8 lenses, they will have some limitations, but for the general amateur will fit the bill.

I'm looking into purchasing a D70 & lenses in early January and I have chosen to buy the Sigma. If you do a search through these forums, there is plenty of info and opinions for you to read and make your own decision.

Good luck

Aussie Dave :-)

I to am leaning to the Sigma, although Best Buy has the Nikon 70-300 G for $180.

I have the Sigma and am using it in terrible light to shoot surfers - very pleased with it - focuses OK and the pics are nice.

Only thing I don't like is that the front rotates so using a thread mounted polariser would be dificult.
Good value for money.

It seems that almost everyone who has either of the 3 lenses I listed earlier in this thread are very happy with their lens.

I guess, if you work within the lens' limitations, your photos should work out OK. if you try to push it past it's limits (which I think a few people tend to do), they experience poor quality and as a result, blame the lens.

I'm looking forward to getting my D70 and lenses so I can get out there and have some fun.....

I have just bought the Sigma APO MKll Macro 70-300mm. Very pleased with it so far, nice quality, well rated on this forum, (why I chose that one), and not expensive - about £140 here in the UK

Hope that helps

Hi Lionheart,

I'm looking for a 70-300mm lens myself and am trying to decide between the Nikon and the Sigma. Where can I find the Sigma for £140 in the uk? Cheapest I've found so far is £199 for the Sigma and £250 for the Nikon. Also, is there any discernable difference between them in quality?

Thanks,
Rick

Tamron recently came out with a 28-300 Di lens that I bought for $380 ($400 with 20 rebate). I would recommend this lens, as it gives you a bit more wide angle than the 70-300
