Sony shows S85, is Nikon Sleeping????

What about this scenario:

Mar 98 Coolpix 900
Oct 98 Coolpix 900S (7 mths later)
Feb 99 Coolpix 950 (4 mths later)
Jan 00 Coolpix 990 (11 mths later)
April 01 Coolpix 995 (15 mths later)
Nov 01 Coolpix 2000? (7 mths later) Just in time for Xmas...

Just a wild guess, I know....

Since Sony is the manufacturer of the new 4 megapixel CCD, it would seem to make sense to me that they would be first to market with a camera that uses it. My guess is that Nikon will be coming out with their own model using it fairly soon, and I'd also guess that it will be worth the wait. I love my 880, and I definitely like the fact that it uses CF cards rather than memory sticks.

Robert

Rules? It took me less than 0.4 nanoseconds to
dismiss any digital still camera which uses memory
stick.

Currently, you can buy 128mb compact flash for about
the same price as 64mb memory stick.

Is 128mb memory stick even available yet?

And, if I need more storage, I can use a 1GB microdrive
in any compact flash type II camera.

What's the memory stick answer to that? Not
that I can afford to know...

Sony's CZ lens can handle the extra pixels. Not true with the lens on the Nikons. Phil even criticized the 995 lens in his Sony S85 review.

If Nikon wants to compete in the digicam market, it needs successors to both the 880 and 995, with better lenses as well as more pixels. This means a completely new design, unlike Sony which simply slipped a different CCD into the same camera.

I'm not sure that Nikon will sell a lot of 995s once Sony has the S85 out at the same price but with a better lens, more pixels, and a smaller size as well. (Who wants to carry around that huge 995 with the swivelling thingy?)

Now if Nikon could come out with a successor to the 880, but with 5MP and better lens (and please keep away the CA, I love the 880 because it has so little CA), then I'd jump up and down to get one.

Lee,

I think you're right regarding Sony's Memorystick but take a look at this report : http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html

Don't knock that swivelling thingy until you've tried it. It makes for a much smaller package than would otherwise be possible when folded up. And I would hardly call it "huge," certainly not after carrying around the likes of a 505 or CD1000.

I will grant that the Coolpix line needs a faster and sharper lens, though.

The article I'm referring is "The Big get even Bigger"; it explains one more time Sony's strategy.

From my point of view I'll follow Nikon; personally I think that the real challenge will be between the new 5.2 Mp from Oly/Kodak and the new digitals from Nikon and Sony. We'll see...

Here are the Sony Rules:

1. If we invent a new technology--we will RULE!

2. We use Nikon high-precision integrated circuit fabrication machines to make our custom chips. Do NOT breathe a word about this because if people find out, they may be in doubt that we RULE!

3. Instead, create a climate wherever possible to sew the seeds of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) within the ranks of customers of other manufacturer's products so we can continue to RULE!
4. If you can, get people not officially connected to us to shout "Sony Rules!"

5. For gosh sake, never swear. It's against the Sony Rules.

6. Swear that you will hold faithful all of these, and the unwritten, Sony Rules!

PS: Holy Cow! 224 more pixels!!! How did I ever get along without them!?! Think of all the things you can do with these nearly 11% more pixels: You can print bigger pictures--nearly 11% larger! You can use up more memory storage space. You can print the same size pictures with more pixels under the printing dots. You can buy a larger CF card... oops. Memory Stick....

Hey, no wonder they control the 'Stick! The bigger their imaging chip--the more sticks people will need. Can people buy stock in Memory Sticks? I hear that they're going to sell nearly 11% more of them soon.

...could NOT resist...

Okay, okay, so you got that off your chest...but you have to admit a brighter lcd screen and an indication of battery life left, low light focus assist (the most significant that come to mind at the moment) are much to be desired, huh?

Sure. All improvements are Good Things. This new 3.8 meg chip has the desirable ability to fit into a number of current 3.34 meg designed camera/optic platforms. Will Nikon bring out a 999? or will they call it a 994? Or would it be a 995.4? Or will they skip it and go for the 5000 series, jumping the 4 megger and going directly to the much larger 5meg chip?
