Can anyone tell me the best price Jessops will do the Canon 300D+lens kit for under their price-match scheme, and from which store they found this to be offered

Bit disillusioned by their 'price-match' policy after my own first-hand experience last week....

I was in Jessops last week to buy an Canon IXUS 40, and had a couple of print-outs from the web so they could price match it. Think the Jessops price instore was about £258 ish, but when they rang through to head office the lowest they would price match it for was £238 (even though several online stores - Amazon and eBuyer - were doing it for around £223)

However, after walking around town it would appear that no other high street store selling cameras would price-match from the internet

Jessops only price match locally (with 10/20 mile radius) and when you ask for an internet price match, they ring through and it seems to be at Jessops head quarters discretion (or is it at the Jessops branch managers discretiion?)

So my question is - what is the cheapest price-match that you've been offered from Jessops... is there any technique or method whereby they will match a lower price?

The cheapest I've seen the Canon 300d + lens kit online is Amazon.co.uk (£596.96), but ideally I'd like to buy it from a bricks n mortar shop

I got mine for £619 in Coventry (UK). I just went in and took digital camera mag (any mag with plenty of ads in will do) and pointed to several prices that were more competitive than theirs. Their best price was £619 (less the £100 cashback thats £519 (you have to pay the full cost then claim your £100 direct from canon). you might want to mention that Cameras2U.com (owned by Jessops) are £619 and that should do the trick.

Sorry to respond to my own question but when I phoned my local Jessops branch (in the north-west of UK) they quoted me the best price-match that they would do is £629.90

When I said that Amazon are doing it for £596.96
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C9VZN/

the guy @ Jessops said "no, Amazon's price includes the £100, so their actual price is £696.96"

This is surely not the case... If I was to buy it via the link above, it would cost me £596.96 - £100 cashback .. ie. £496.96

The guy said "no Amazon's price definitely includes the £100 already, I've checked with them for several customers"

Jessops website quotes £689.90, so the £629.90 they offered to match is a saving of £60 off their instore price, but I'm still not impressed

Looks like I might just have to buy from an online company (ie. no bricks n mortar) and take the risk --- any opinions?

Thanks for the reply Paul

Just had a look @ Cameras2u.com and they have the 300D for £618
http://cameras2u.com/products/details.cfm?product=8862A011AA

The best price I could get from my 2 local Jessops over the phone was £629.90...

£619 is still £20 more than Amazon, but worth considering -- thanks once again

In Guildford Jessops the list price is £629 - probably due to local stores selling it for that price. As for Amazon - I don't believe it includes the £100 cashback because it used to be about £615 or so up until the cashback promotion and then dropped afterwards to around £600. Unless they added £85 onto that price and then included the cashback - I very much doubt it. If unsure, phone them yourself and ask. Also, you could try buying it through Amazon and get a print out of your checkout page (ie. final price that will be billed to you) and then cancel before entering card details. Use this as proof.

Alternatively, just show them Warehouse Express's website page which shows it clearly as £499 including cashback (ie. £599 before hand). Note their delivery charge of about £7-£8 though, but still better than Jessops.

Finally, you could go with Park Cameras which have it at £619 inc free delivery. I believe Park Cameras is one they always used to match without much problem.

Alternatively, if you have a Barclaycard, buy it on that from Jessops and use their Price Promise to claim back the difference between Jessops and Amazon (note though that they're removing this benefit soon due to changes in the FSA regulations), but I think its valid until Feb for existing customers, 1st Jan for new customers.

Thanks for the info David

I do indeed have a Barclaycard VISA and was planning on buying the camera using that - so interested in their 'price promise' guarantee

If I was to take Jessops price-match price of £629.90 today, do you think Barclaycard would then refund me the £30 difference (as Amazon have it for £596.96)... considering the price offered to me was already a price-match ?

Barclaycard Price Promise basically says - Buy a branded item in the UK for more than £50 and if you find it cheaper elsewhere within 60 days from a UK retailer, and we'll credit you account with the difference. Price must include all costs (delivery etc) and they'll need proof etc (eg. printout of checkout page and of item description).

Don't have the link but just google for Barclaycard and Price Promise and it'll be at the top. Read the T&C's and see what you think.

Also - they have a free extended warranty service. Any 'appliance' over £150 will get an additional 1 years extended warranty. Over £500 and you get 2 years extra. Their definition of appliance is very wide, and includes digital cameras. I got my paperwork through after a while which gives me warranty until 1st Nov 2007!!! All for free! Would have been about £100 from other places for that warranty. I've got no worries about shutter failures now.... ;)

Again, T&C's apply - but just search for Barclaycard and Extended Warranty. Again, they're withdrawing the service, but same time limits apply. The time limits are on their site too.

Hope that helps.

David (shame I don't get commission... ;)

Thanks David

Not sure if I buy from Jessops using their own price-promise and get the camera for £629.90 whether I can then claim the extra £30 back from Barclaycard (ie. Amazon of £596.96)

I looked at the Barclaycard Price Promise T+C at the following URL:

http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/Products/Apply/Card_Benefits/Price_Promise/tandc.html

and found this statement, under Section 5 - Exclusions:

"

2. Any items for which a claim has been made or could be made using the retailer's own lowest price guarantee or other agreement
"

Is it still valid if I'm already lowering the price Jessops offer from £689.90 to £629.90

Jessops branches in Plymouth are doing the kit for £599 due to a local price match. I bought one on Saturday. The £100 rebate claim form was included + 2 x 25 printing vouchers and a £10 Jessops own brand voucher.

Just phoned the Barclaycard Price Promise claims line (0845 300 1037)

they said they would be able to honour the difference between Jessops lowest price (even after they'd locally price matched £629.90) and Amazon.co.uk's price of £596.96

Obviously they're be some hassle with paperwork etc, but it looks like I'll be able to get the Canon EOS 300d + lens kit for the price I wanted from a brick n mortar store

I'll let you know how I get on ... just off to try and purchase one from Jessops now in town....

I'm also planning on getting a 300D with Barclaycard price match. By my reckoning, the price will fall after the £100 cashback ends, so I figure if I purchase in mid-January, that'll give the maximum opportunity for getting the £100 cashback, and following up mid-feb with an even lower price match.

Yup - Barclaycard are withdrawing the service and purchases must be made on or before 31st Jan 05. Claims must be made by 1st April 05 (within 60 days of purchase), which means if you bought at the last minute, you've got until end of March to see the prices drop further before making the claim... ;)

Thanks for that - I didn't know that Barclaycard were withdrawing the service. RBS offer a similar service, but I think you have to pay for it, and it doesn't cover online only retailers. Anyone know of any other UK credit card companies who offer a similar service to Barclaycard?

My thoughts were simply that Canon may either introduce another offer, or prices will drop at the end of the current cashback period, possibly a fair way, if any follow up to the 300d were to be announced during the period.

Yeah, it seems all credit card companies which offer these kinds of services are withdrawing them soon. Its to do with the fact that the Financial Services Authority will soon regulate insurance sales, and these perks class as insurance. Apparently not that many people make use of it, so the additional red tape and low usage will remove it....

A quick look around reveals citibank platinum visa card as a possibility for price match & extended warranty, though it is only for 1 year.

https://www.citicards.co.uk/index.htm

Still, seems to fill the gap left by Barclaycard, until they withdraw the benefits from Citicard too ..... !!

Actially I've now decided to wait until after the Christmas rush/madness dies down -- I wouldn't have been able to get hold of a cheap 1gb Compact Flash card in time for Christmas (from ebuyer or 7dayshop) so I might as well wait to buy the camera in January ... maybe a few days before the end of the month

Damn it - I new it would happen sooner rather than later. Got a local store (Photo-Optix) to do me a deal with the 75-300 lens (ok, I know it isn't a great lens but ...). Because of the Barclaycard price match, I don't really mind paying over the odds for the camera, and got them to stick all the discount on the lens.

Anyhow, now all I need is a 50mm f1.8 ..... & get out shooting!
