Just have sold Archos Jukebox Multimedia 20 and looking for a reliable storage device.

What is in your opinion the most reliable and decent performer?

A lot of units seem to be nothing more than design flaws: problems with certain cards, unchangeable battery with critical lifetime, megaslow transfer, poor build quality, electrical problems (compactdrive voltage item is catastrophic, unbelievable this product is sold for microdrives).

Have considered Flashtrax, but I don't know if this thing is really worth the money as I just need a simple and reliable unit.
Do you think there is some smart unit without major flaws worth to buy?

Thank you

Julian

I am considering the Vosonic 6210 as they are having a firmware upgrade in January so that raw files will be displayed. Smaller, but I just want to see the photos to check they have been saved and it comes in more Gs if one wants. Also a car charger. I have not seen reviews yet so if someone has it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

just saw on http://fhoude34.free.fr/PortableHD.htm that the speed is quiet nice. Is the battery interchangeable?

Depends on the features you want and how much you are willing to pay.

I have used a Image Tank for over three years and never lost an image. It is simple no frills and can take large a HD.

For a while I used the Addonics MFR and burned CD's but was not happy with that.

Just purchased a Transcend Digital Album. Only a 20 Gig HD but also has a 2" screen to view images. Serves as am MP3 player if you are so inclined.

I just saw a post and went to Steve's to check out his review. It sounds like he likes it. I would love find out what he thinks about it versus other units. I just bought a RCA Lyra 1280. I am into it for about $275. I have not read many good things about it but the price was right (Black Friday deal).

I only have 12 hours left for me to return it though, so I am sweating a bit. I probably could sell it on Ebay for what I have into it I guess.

I have decided that recording off of my TV and mini dish is more important than I thought!! A lot of these PSD wont record "protected" media like a store bought DVD. If I am going to be on a plane, train, or automobile (hey, wasn't that a movie?) I want to be able to entertain myself.

How do you like your Digital Album so far?

Thanks!!

Well, I don't want/care about gimicks (mp3, etc.).
I just find it hard to get a storage device, which is ...
  • free of major design errors
  • reliable
  • not to slow that I have to wait over half an hour to empty a 2 GB card.
Image tank has a quiet good reputation. But I think it is a bit slow for nowadays CF cards. (About 1MB/s?)

compactdrive would be just perfect (speed, endurance, simplicity). But the battery issue is a no go.

Transcend Digital Album looks promising. I would not need the screen as it can't display RAW files but I would spend the money if it's not slow like the others.
Do you use the digital album already?

thank you

Just got a letter from Vosonic in Australia and they said to wait till january regarding raw files and also the prices will be different. I looked at Vosonic's site and see there is now a VP 6300 and am a bit confused as to the difference with the VP6120. Anyway I will wait as it may be worth waiting for CES 2005 in January anyway.

Have only played with the Digital Album and it does what Transcend claims it does. On my next oveseas trip (Egypt) I will give it a real work out.

I will also use my Image Tank G2 as back up

I've had a Flashtrax for a year. Transfer is slow and the screen isn't that great, but there problems with every alternative, including the "Highly Recommended" Epson which was just reviewed. There's no perfect solution yet.

Make that just "Recommended," even though Phil said that when Epson asks for it back they'll have to pry it out of his cold dead hands.

:-)

As I understand the Epson P-2000's 8.3 limitation makes it unusable as an external harddrive for PC file storage? Will the long filenames be truncated? I guess so.

well, during a trip my laptop did not boot anymore. I had no windows CD with me and that was the reason I've bought the Archos during that trip in order to unload my cards.

I take my notebook always with me on the trips. But in addition a want a reliable storage unit. I want to store the files on both. That's the only way for me to have a safe storage. All this PC notebook windows, personal storage device junk is not safe enough that I would rely on just one unit.

When money is no object, go for a lightweight mobile P4 laptop or
subnotebook. For more peace of mind, two words for you: Panasonic
Toughbook.
