Hi,

I'm currently looking for a BackPack that'll fit all my equipment, and maybe a jacket?!

Looking at all the Threads out there -which are quite a few- I can't find one that comes really close to what I'm looking for - maybe one of you guys has similar needs and could give me some advise?!

Here it goes:
  • Canon 20D with
  • 28-135IS USM attached
  • Canon 18-55 (Kit Lens)
  • Canon 100-400L IS USM
  • occasionally I'd like to be able to carry my Apple Powerbook 12" (tiny) with me!?
-Manfrotto Tripod (3001BD) maybe attachable on the outside of the bag?!

The Tamrac velocity series looks interesting, but I have no idea it it'll fit my stuff??
It should be pretty sturdy - since I'll have it also with me on flights..

I'd really appreciate some help on that
Thanks

The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse in him to keep looking.

Brooks Atkinson, 'Once Around the Sun'

The larger Tamrac backpacks work better with 1 series cameras or 20D with a battery grip. Without the grip attached, there is just too much room for the camera to move around.

I have owned a 767 and it was a great bag. Even though it was considered to be a medium sized pack, it could still hold my 10D/BG-ED3 with 70-200/2.8 attached.

I moved up to a Tamrac Cyberpack 6 and I am very happy with it. It has more than enough space for all of current gear. It is also nice to be able to be able carry my Dell 8100 notebook with me.

I have frieds that use the Expedition 4 and 3 with their 10D's. Each of these packs is better suited for use without a grip attached. On the 4 you can fit a 20D/BG-E2 in there, but its a really tight fit. The 3 would proably not work.

Hi,

well, I don't have the battery grip so the cam is rather "small" und just the two lenses would also allow a smaller bag but it seems there are just these huge backpacks available.. !?

Anybody with a small one?!?! or do they just seem to be that big?!

To fit your laptop and a jacket, I'd look at the Lowepro Rover Plus AW (just add a laptop sleeve) or perhaps one of the Crumpler models -- Brian's Hot Tub or Farmer's Double.

I got the answer!

TENBA DB - 15C

Plenty of room for a laptop and a jacket, as well as your equipment.

Hi Andreas. I just did an extensive search and decided on the Canon 200 EG backpack. It is laid out very well and allows for a body; 3-4 lenses (my 70-200 is my largest lens-I'm not sure about the 10-400L); a 580 flash; in addition the the standard array of accessories such as filters; hoods; a 1.4tc, etc. You can attach a tripod to the side straps and even wedge a small notebook either between the elastic "doohicky band contraption" on the exterior (which are made to hold something?), or in a seperate interior compartment. The bag is a medium size bag-neither large nor too small. You can customize the interior compartments with the velcro leaves contained within. It appears to be designed much like the lowepro or tamrac backpacks, although I think some of the straps could be beefed up abit to give a more professional and sturdier appearance. The Canon nameplate is also a negative, inviting for possible inquisitiveness by some less than honorable beings.

The biggest plus for me was the fact that it was just the right size for my gear (very similar to yours, sans the 400l; and it was only $49.00 !! I'm very happy with the bag and I believe it is the best bang for the buck. As an amateur, I'm not into having to have the highest image of quality when it comes to a bag around my back-although the black edition of the accessory looks pretty cool and by no means cheap. It does the job for me very nicely, allowing me to pack almost all my gear in a medium size package.
Check it out---you might be pleasantly surprised. I was.

The Tamrac Velocity 9 will hold your lenses and camera, but not your notebook. I love this bag because I can keep it on and reach my equipment by swinging it around to the front. With your laptop, you might want to go with one of the LowePro CompuTrekker bags.

I took a slightly different route, having used LowePro and Tamrac backpacks in the past....

I wanted a backpack (daypack?) that:

1) did not advertise as a camera bag
2) Alllowed for muitiple uses besides photography

3) Had separate compartments to store camera gear, accessories, lunch, a jacket, trail first aid kit, etc.
4) was COMFORTABLE
5) could also take a water bottle or 2 (when day-hiking)
6) had provisions for a hydration pack (for more serious hiking)

What I ended up with was:

A JANSPORT Odyssey daypack - very confortable, internal framstays, waistbelt, sternum strap, etc.

This bag has a main compartment in which I placed a TENBA padded insert-bag that holds camera and lenses

Stilll plenty of room for a jacket or extra layers in main compartment

3 Other compartments contain room for:
"Office" - pens, notebook, GPS, glasses, camera accessories, keys, etc.
Lunch / first aid kit
etc.

Still a small front pocket.

Still has two watter bottle mesh pockets on the outside (which, with neoprene water-bottle cushions, can double as carrying extra lems...)

And a hydration pocket.

So....you can really load this thing up, or pull compression straps to make it a little slimmer for carry-on purposes on the plane.

Pulling out the TENBA bag insert enable use for ther purposes,

BTW, for more protrection of the bottom of hte bag, I put a thermalite self-inflating pad, half-inflated and folded in half on the bottom - not only does it add almost no weight, but it adds cushioning on the bottom and doubles as something to sit on when taking a break on the trail....

My conclusion is that you trade a little quickness (but how many backpacks are really that quick?) in terms of camera gear access, but gain a lot in travel versatility, hiking comfort, and separation of camera gear from other stuff. In my situation, it's more "real-world" practical for my particular needs. It is admittedly not for everyone, but the use of a daypack adapted to cameras seemed to work better for me than a camera pack that was not as strong with day-hiking and travel essentials.
Anybody with a small one?!?! or do they just seem to be that big?!

I wanted a backpack which provides fast acces to the camera, like the Tamrac Velocity type of backpack. But the Velocity 7 and 9 did not provide space for anything else apart of the cameraequipment. So I ordered the "L" model from "Holst" just yesterday. I am eagerly waiting for it to find out if it is as good as I heard about it.

Sorry, only in german, but just click the "zum Rungang" link and then the "weiter" link in the bottom right corner to tour their site.

I want to fit a Canon 10D, 17-40L, 28-80, flash and a tripod.

Best regards,

Thomas.

I'm also looking for a new bag, but for my Canon 10D+grip, couple of lenses, speedlight and an iBook. at the moment i'm carrying around a lowepro AW650 which get a bit too heavy for one shoulder but this bag looks perfect for me.

can you describe the internal compartment in a bit more detail? i've had a look online for pics but can only find external shots and the lace straps on the front doesn't look like it would protect the laptop very well.

and is it deep enough to fit a 10D+grip attached?

thanks

Thank y'all very much for your help!!

I did some research as well, and came across the Lowepro Trim Trekker - I like the idea of a Backpack as well as a "Messenger bag" seems to be easy and Quick in accesing the camera - especially that Drawer thing in the bottom?!

I wonder, if my 20D (with out Battery Grip) would still leave enough room on the back to fit my Apple PB 12" wit a thin protection Sleeve in there?!

Otherwise the Tenba 15C is really tempting... quite an interesting bag..

Thank you
Andreas

Hi,

that one sounds interesting, could you tell me if it comes with shoulder strap - I saw, that it has some rings to attach any kind of strap - I just wonder if it is both Backpack and Sling Pack (likt the Lowepro Trim Trekker)?!
Also, how big is it on your back?!

Thanks

The slings you are referring to I believe are the clip on attachable handles that allow you to also carry the pack like a suitcase on its side. It is very usefull. The lunbar straps are also tuck away.

It is somewhat large but not like the huge ones I have seen. It will cover the back from the base of the neck to the lumbar area on an average size person.

It is bigger than the trim trekker.

The minni trekker classic is also a great choice, but no computer slot.
Thanks

well no-one replied so i did a bit more reading and decided to buy [order online] unseen. big mistake :( its way too small. its not a medium bag at all, but more of a small size, maybe a large small :) but its a very tight fit for a 10+grip. the zipper is very difficult to close, and forget about a laptop, makes it worse. and since the bag is so small, all the weight is very uncomfortable on the shoulders, what with the narrow straps.

after saying that it does seem like a nice bag, if your camera doesn't have a grip, and the lenses don't weigh much, or you only carry an extra one. looks like it should last a while.

i bought this bag because i wanted to replace or compliment my lowepro stealth report 650aw shoulder bag. its a little TOO big, and was unformfortable on one shoulder. i'll take the 200EG on a trip later in the year and see how it goes.

what i could fit in mine (all my gear)
10D + grip
Sigma 15mm on camera
Canon 100-300mm
Canon 50mm
Canon 28-135mm
Canon 550EX with omnibounce attached
Compactdrive
RS-80N3, OFF-CAMERA SHOE CORD 2
assorted batteries and filters
cellphone and ipaq

and an apple ibook, but i don't think i'll be carrying it in this bag. very little protection, makes bag too heavy and very difficult to close bag.

watch this space for photos in the near future

Why don't you look into a Lowepro Compu-Trekker - I use that when I travel and it gives good protection for my computer and it holds all the gear I wish to take. I also have a Stealth Reporter but I use it mainly as a storage bag.
