Whiners cease!

I think today is a landmark day for the DSLR industry, marking a trend to sane prices all around. Bravisimo Nikon.

Heck, the four vehicles in our driveway drop $1000 about every 20 days!
An EOS-1D MSRP was $6500.00 ! less than 36 months ago. A D1 MSRP was $5580.00.
How quickly we forget.

The net effect of todays Xmas present from Nikon is that all DSLR's will be a thousand bucks cheaper than you thought sooner than later.

If all this disturbs you naysayers....shut off your computer and go rub your significant other's feet or back or anatomy of your choice.

Whine-no-more.

have my utmost respect. Obviously you made an informed decision when buying and the D2H satisfies your needs and you are more interested in taking pictures than selling or whining.

Looking forward to some very interesting days ahead.

A leap toward market maturity.

I do sort of feel bad for anyone who bought a D2H last week, although we haven't heard from them much. I suspect they know what they are getting and not worried about resale at the moment.

If this means we are one step closer to a pro-level DSLR costing no more than an F5 or an EOS 1V (~$2000) then kudos to Nikon.

A D2X contains little or no more silicone surface area than does a 300D(now $679.95 at B&H after rebate.). Once we get over this early adopter R&D pricing we can all be happy(yeah, right).

Some day we can have a "Pro-DSLR(all brands) Forum" on DPR and relegate all this cacophony to memory and get on with photography.

Now....decisions,decisions....do I go read what the Canon forums think about D2H pricing...or go checkout the tender bits in the boudour....hmmmmmm......

I agree. I think everyone it just thinking about us D2h owners. However this is like a stone thrown into a lake. The ripples will cover the entire DLSR market. Not only is the used D2h worth less but also the D1x/h, D100 and the D70 because the D2h is such a fantastic camera it is a steal at $2K.

It will also effect Canon users as well. A used 1D was going for about $2200-2500 last week. Now the D2h is less than a used 1D this will force those prices down as well. Even though MPs are the same the D2h out shines the 1D in just about every other category. How about the new Canon market? At $4500.00 is the MkII twice the camera of the D2h. Not by a long shot. Look for a price drop there too.

I purchased my D2h about 8 months ago and it has already paid for itself. I shoot for an event company who shoot both the 1D and my D2h. We don't need (or want) anything more than 4 MP because of the drive space necessary to store the photos. We take 40-60,000 pictures in a weekend. With a 33% bigger file size in an 8MP camera that mean we need 33% more disk space to store them. Over a season that equates to an extra terrabytt of space. Not a good thing.

At first I was a bit angry but then I realized that this did not make my D2h any less of a camera than the D2h made my D1x. The thing that frustrates me is there is no "official" announcement from Nikon on price drop or the replacement. And trust me there will be a replacement because the D2x will not fill the void left by a discontinued D2h. Also if whatever the D2h replacement is does not have a 4MP mode like the MkII it may not be something for me.

It has been my experience that the majority of those who complained about the D2h had never owned on or even held one in their hands. I wonder how many of them will be buying one at the new price.

Just the .02 of another D2h owner.

I also agree. I own two D2H bodies and love them! I am a journalist and I really do not need or want 8MP when shooting for the papers or magazines, heck for that matter even when shooting events. I wouldn’t print anything over 11x14 or for magazine a 2-page spread and the D2H is just awesome for this. For anything larger that is a different story… 4MP is more than enough and the space I save for storage with it is very valuable to me. Now their are times I want more than 4 and 8 would really help but when shooting stories or sports 4 is more than enough.

For group shots or the occasional wedding 4 just doesn’t cut it so I break out the film, no big deal.

I bought the camera when they first came out and have no regrets...

Even with the price break and the new D2X coming out it still doesn’t affect my images and my clients are happy with the results.

Heck I may pick up another, but I am waiting to see what is going to happen in the next few months...

Just my 2 cents...

If the D2H is left in the lineup as is, and at the $2000 price point, then I agree that's a significant event in dSLR pricing. I could almost see that as possible, with Nikon also announcing the D2HS at 8mp and priced at $3200 (or thereabouts). That would be clever marketing at the pro level, but I could certainly create problems for the D100 replacement. Where would they price that?

However, I think it's far more likely that the low price is to clear out the D2H and set the stage for the $3200 D2HS.

I suspect we'll know soon.

Prices that make sense are in our future...

I see no reason for a D?X to cost more than an F6... 2000
I see no reason for a D?00 to cost more than a n F100...
800

The Drebel is,what, 680 now??

Someday soon the silicone is the cheaper part...the mechanicals 2/3 the cost.

Early adopters like me/us pay high prices......and we act surprised....duh

For me the same. The D2H cost me less than $ 2 (= $4 for the two) a shooting day. The gas in the car to go to the site cost more.

I don´t think of resell my D2H´s, the way I use it nobody will buy it. So I have no loss if the price go down to $ 1000 new. Nikon ( and Canon) know that lenses make the profit and not the bodies.

... the thing's a piece of sh!t now, I feel dirty even touching mine. Someone might think I can only afford a $2000.00 camera. What will the neighbors think? It's going to be rough waiting for the d2x, only then will I be able to take proper pictures again, the angst of shooting with a camera that only costs $2000.00 will cripple my creative abilities. My cat bolted with he sensed I may be trying to take his picture with a sub $3000.00 camera. I thought the boys in Iraq had it tough …. :-)
