Chile is hosting the South American Championship tournament at the moment, I have made myself the unofficial official photographer! The participating countries are Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Guyana and Puerto Rico. I have so far shot four of the matches although only processed this afternoon´s game between Argentina and Guyana.

These are my first attempts at sport photography, any constructive criticism is welcome although we all know that this sort of thing is very hit and miss. I used my Crystalvue LX for the close up shots, I am pretty pleased with my first try.

Hi 35sur,

I thought I'd reply, doesn't seem to be a lot of cricket fanatics in here!.

I've been through your photos and congratulate you on your captures. I've spend the last couple of weekends taking pics of the local junior (16-17 year olds) cricket so I know whay your going through. Although the 7000 with its zoom will allow you to get in close on the action, a more wider shot allows the view to get a feel of the action around the batter.

Remember to keep the shutter speed up at longer zoom length and include some of the surrounds (crowds, unpires etc). Most of your shots are taken from square of the wicket, try getting around to long on or long off to get the bowler's follow through and the batter's stroke. Happy shooting!

well done!

Les
(thanks to Yirmon for the PP in my shot).

Hmmmm, no one seems to get your "style" on the shot you included, I do and I loved it! I had a look at the rest of the gallery too, nice work 35, good variety of shots in there.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series :-)

Hi Les,

Thanks for your thoughts. To be honest, my style is to go for the grit and sweat, not the genteel side of cricket! Those shots were taken with a digiscope - the s7000 on full zoom didn´t even get close to the action. I should invest in a T-con, a lens that´s easier to carry around but still gets close up there.

All my shots are taken from the same vantage point, sadly. I had my kids with me and the chance of moving around was somewhat slim. I have often thought about selling them into slavery........ :D

Nice shot, by the way. Where was it taken?

Thanks Andy, the final matches were today and I have a hell of post to do!

In fairness, I think you are more used to my tongue-in-cheek style than most other people, not to mention that many people on this forum will never have heard of cricket. I was just pleased to get the chance to try something different!

Loiuse,

Yes, I see what you mean. A T-Con on your 7000 would get in most of the way. The shot of mine was taken with a 602 with a fuji teleconverter. I know it's not all the way in there, but you do get the main action and a bit of background.

Selling the kids into slavery is a win, win - you get to spend more time on your photography and they get to travel and see the world :-)

My shots are local - regional town in the middle of New South Wales, Australia. We are pretty fortunate, having a number of turf wicket grounds that even guys at this young age get to play on. unfortunately on the day this was shot (the day of the Final) wet weather the previous night had made the turf wicket unplayable and the game was switched to one of the outlying synthetic wicket grounds. That's our eldest son cracking the four. They went on to win comfortably in the end.

I look forward to rest of your shots. I just took another look and I really like this one:

that really is amongst the sweat and the grit!

Cheers,

Les.
