hey sander, howd ya do the thing with your d2h at the end of your
post with the moving boy, craig from kentucky also your focal
range, 12-24, and 70-200, what about in between these, i use the
28-75, tryin to make up my mind on a wider lens, thanks
Hi Graig, I'm guessing you mean this photo? Basically I frame the subject first, hold the lens by the zoom-ring with the left hand and the camera in the right hand. After manually setting a longish shutterspeed like half a second, I hold the lens steady but turn the camera, making it skew to the left or right while zooming in or out. What you get as a result is a smooth blend of the first framed position and the last position to hwich you zoomed the camera.

In between, I was a bit worried about that so I brought a 50mm from my girlfriend with me, but I never used it, and used the 12-24 at 12mm mostly, if anything I would want a wider fixed focal length lens (9mm?).
Other than that, I think the 12-24 is great!

Hope this answers your question.

I'm awestruck! Those are really great shots. Never been to NY before, sure hope that one of these days I'll get to see somthing other than Cali.

Should have dropped by the West coast, and hung out with us ;)

You're image definately makes me want to travel.

Gregory

i've taken hundreds of shots in NY, but they are snapshots compared to these. I want to come back!
So I just came back from a short vacation (please read no further
if you are offended by such trivial posts...)

I won't go as far as to call these photos 'Artistic', so I'll call
them 'Artsy'.

Of course I've never seen Lala-land before either, but you're a lot closer, maybe when the kids grow up you can show them NYC, it's a very fun place to visit... Thanks for the comment Gregory,

Thank you very much, and I agree you could spend a whole month there trying to see all the stuff it has to offer, I was there for just 6 days this time around. Next time it'll be longer and I'm getting a better hotel, like the Waldorf or something ;) (yeah right!).

What I mean is I zoomed, skewed and moved a lot during the creation
of these shots, and than used some unsual ACR conversion techniques
pumping color and contrast to a 'pleasing' level.

All shots taken with D2h with either a 70-200 VR or a 12-24 DX, the
difference is of course apparent. Most often long shutterspeeds,
handheld or tripod supported, ISO usually at 800 or up, sometimes
(tripod) as low as 200 which is atypical for me.

So here's a small number of the grand total, taken recently in New
York & Washington, I have to thank Janet, RFC, James, Brent, Ron
and others for helping me out in the preparation for the trip, I
appreciate it a lot!

Guggenheim:

Empire state:

Statue of liberty:

MoMA:

Starbucks:

St Patricks (0.8 seconds handheld!)

Chrysler from ESB:

Washington Monument:

Lincoln at dusk:

Seagull in my shadow:

National Archives:

If you have any questions about any of these feel free to ask, even
though this post is just for showing you some photos, if I can help
anyone with some information I would be more than happy to. Thanks
for watching these :)

Robert

Hi Robert, tank you for your kind comments,

For the blurred statue shot I had many shots that did not work, and only a few that looked ok, this is one of them. I set the camera to manual exposure first at f/22 and variations of shutterspeeds between 1/4th of a second and 1/8th, zoomed to frame the shot close or wide and tried both zooming and from wide, or zooming out from close, until I g0t the desired results... Took me over half an hour to get the right shot... ;^)

Hi Mike, glad to be able to cheer you up a bit, staying in isn't always fun...

Here's another one from the same day but with a different exposure and from another position within the building:

Get well soon :)

Perhaps the term "artful". They're nice, a far cry from most of the happy snaps made around the city. Good light on most, interesting compositions.

And so much nicer to look at than most people's recent trip to the zoo or pictures of their own cat.

I have more cameras and lenses than you.

no, not yet,but I have finished my post-processing an now, in tree days, we have a tree wek holiday, so that, then I can put my images on the web, and some of them in the forum...
Lex
Thanks for the comment, I haven't been on the forum for quite a
while, have you posted your Namib shots yet?
