Does anyone know the status of the software that runs these forums? Have you seen it anywhere else or is it unique to DPReview?

I've emailed Phil twice in an attempt to find out but have had no response. If it's unique to DPReview than I can stop wasting my time but if it's commercially available then I'd like to know where to get hold of it.

Thanks,
Jon O'Brien.

I wrote it, and no it's not for sale.

Great job, it should be (form & function) required for any type of forum in terms of ease of use.

15 years as a freelancer,(news, magazine, wedding photography) camera equip. over the years: Practica MLT, Canon A1, Minolta 9xi, 7xi, Dimage Z1(see my Z1 shots at http://www.photobucket.com ALBUM NAME: buckl the COMMUNITY album was done with the Z1, and most of the photos in the album:Other were w/the Z1)

I have one issue with it.

The image display in threads isn't compatible with Safari on OSX. If you click the image to enlarge an image, Safari gets a hick-up and displays like half the image in the upper left corner.

Furthermore, the menus (the main site menus) on the left doesn't work either (i.e they don't expand).

I would guess the the percentage of visitors on this site with a Mac is quite higher than any other site in general. You can run Firefox, but Firefox is slow on OSX (even on a dual G5, try a site with a lot of animated adverts for example). Safari is much faster.

I don't know about Opera on dpreview.com, but I do know you run into more compatibility problems with Opera than with Safari in general.

This is hardly a site to complain about but, StefanJ took the words right out of my keyboard...

I also have a serious issue with it... it creates addiction. Those g.. d..m thorough camera tests makes one wanting to read more and more and more...

I have gotten into trouble in my personal life because of the site and trying to sleep with it makes the laptop burn marks on my side.

:-))

Three cheers for Phil... wonderful site, must be a good business too.

Kudos to you Phil, these forums are the best I've seen in terms of ease-of-use, readability, etc.

...this site kick a*s. There is so much information in these forums that you basically never need to search elsewhere.

It would be fully complete however if it would work 100% on Safari as well :)

I'm sure others have already told you, but VBulletin is probably the most frequently used forum software that's purported to be easy to use and robust (and very inexpensive.)

That said, I love this site. DPReview trumps every other that I can think of in terms of photo content and design, and that's saying a tremendous amount. I wouldn't consider a camera without consulting this site first, and have recommended it to numerous friends & strangers.

Thanks Phil,

Jeff

... linked pictures do not display automatically in replied messages?

Hi Phil,

Actually , linked pictures are displayed automatically. In replies too, unless we add a semi colon like this ; at the end of the link. Sometimes repliers forget or don't know about the ;

What about programming the software so that linked images are not displayed by default when we click on replies?

Best Regards
John

Phil

For one who spends hours on these forums, could we have one small change, or rather addition.

Could you make pressing "n" take you to the next message instead of having to use the mouse all the time.
You could go the whole hog with, "b" for back and "r" for reply.
It is a lovely site and it attracts some really wonderful contributors.

Many thanks, Tink.

Writing this site from scratch was a herculean task I'm sure, but I find DPR rather cumbersome as discussion forums go. I would strongly suggest vBulletin if you're looking to set up a site of your own.
