I am having a tough time choosing between these two cameras. Both have all the options I need, with the Canon;s flip out LCD taking top honors. However, the Sony was the first choice of DPreview editors. Let's hear users thoughts on teh two cameras to help me make my decision. Thanks in advance!

If not, do so. For those with smaller hands, I wonder how comfortable the Canon will feel.

yes, I have tried the Canon and it felt great, but I have big hands so thats not a problem. on cnet, the G6 got better user reviews, and here the sony did. some have told me that the LCD sucks in daylight on the G6, but at the same time, the ISO is inferior to the G6. i am sure both would be great cameras, but I am looking for more feedback. I have owned and like Canon's,and am wondring what peoples thoughts are.

G6 has quite a few features that will pull towards itself
1. Twist and Swivel LCD
2. Infrared Remote with Zoom and Shutter control

3. Better Image Quality at ISO 50(and higher also - but most of the times i use ISO 50)
4. Fast Write Speeds when it comes to Raw Mode

5. CF II Slot for MicroDrives... u may not prefer, but that is a definite advantage as far as i am concerned
6. Good Movie mode which works with CF card

7. Very fast lens F2.0-3.0( u will be surprised how useful this will be when u use it)
8. Super Macro Mode... Useful most of the times...
9. Very good control layout

10. Beefy Hand grip... excellent... i tried the V3 at store myself and i prefer the G6 Handgrip far better.

Definitely V3 has its own advantages in terms of AF speed, Infraread focus lamp, 2.5" LCD(no twist and swivel), 30fps movie mode(does not work with CF) . But IMO G6 has real fast AF in good lighting conditions. and good AF in lowlight conditions most of the times...

Don't forget F2.8 on V3 vs F2.0 on G6
LCD display on G6 and no on V3
Also, the V3 lens is less obstructive with lense cap built in
Most important factor if you're a RAW shooter.
RAW with V3 is almost unusable...
Cheers

You are absolutely right. Nubreed, you cannot imagine how the Twist and Swivel LCD is useable! I love it in my G3. There is a lot of situations, when it is a must! And don't forget about the lens which are according to serious testers the best in compact cameras. V3 is surely a good camera, but in my opinion G6 is remarkably better.

Bet regards - Andrzej

I like G6 better because of its image quality.

Well it looks like you really did your homework and needed a slight nudge (although GTG provided a lot of excellent points). Have fun with the new camera. :D

For me, I also would have gone with the G6 if I was in the market for a camera in this range. Canon has consistantly shown they can get good things out of Sony CCD sensors and the G6 is based on a solid line of cameras.

I would have gone with the V3 if the following were big deals:
  • The G6 grip was uncomfortable
  • You really had to have that infrared focus lamp.
Neither of those reasons are issues in my book and I think the image qualities are close enough that other factors separate these two cameras.

A nice benefit is that those CF cards are pretty inexpensive. compared to Sony memory sticks.

you will get more votes towards G6

and on a Sony forum, the V3 will be favored.
In the end you will have to make that final decision.

I sure do like my G6!

Sony V3 also supports CF as well as memory stick - no comparative
benefit there.

Ram, the V3 sure supports CF... but there are 2 negatives to it...
1. CF doesnt work in movie mode.
2. v3 does not support CF II type cards...

u sure will not be interested in purchasing a CF for photo purpose and a Memory Stick for movie purpose. rather, i would guess that u will choose only one that will fit both and that will be memory stick... and that is expensive... that was the meaning posted by Marcos... i would assume... Hope this explains...

Actually, it is only the highest quality movie mode, which requires
mem stick. So the movie modes that are equivalent or better than
G6, work fine with CF in V3.
Agreed Don... I failed to mention that part... But definitely not because of any Bias... :-)

I've owned three Canon digicams (S30, G3 and S1 IS) I've handled both the V3 and G6. When I read the initial reviews of the G6 I thought it sounded great. When I picked one up I was underwhelmed; the body felt less solid than other Gx cameras and less user-friendly than the V3.

If slow, careful shooting is your style, I'm sure the G6 will produce nice images. If low light shooting is important to you, then the V3 is probably more adept, IMO.

How to get this deal:

go to Dell.com and search for Canon powershot G6

I haven't owned a Canon compact or small sensor digicam before but I do own the Canon 20D, 300D, AE-1, T70, etc.

My 'P&S' digicam for the last 2.5 years has been the Sony S75 (great camera btw...).

While returning my three day old A95 to exhange for a Sony W1 (that's another story entirely...), I had a chance to handle both the G6 and the V3.

I honestly tried to be objective as possible when comparing the G6 to the V3. I was truly amazed at how cheap the G6 felt in the hand compared to the V3. It was like comparing my Digital Rebel to my 20D. In fact, certain aspects of the V3 build quality are actually BETTER than my 20D (strap mounts, main dial, finish).

I never compared a Sony to the G5 or G3 cameras, maybe they were better built? I just can't belive how better the Sony build is. From my S75 to the F828 to the V3-all of them look, feel, and handle top notch. The one area that Sony seems to continually beat Canon at is the build and AF.

As far as performance, well hard to actually judge AF speed in a well lit store, but shot to shot times and shutter lag are definately better with the V3 (my own subjective feel ).

At the same time-neither the G6 or the V3 felt particularly good in hand to me (the V3 felt somewhat better).

Looking at the G6 and the V3 side by side without even handling them the V3 looks like a much more serious photographic tool. Picking them up and using them the V3 gets the nod again for its faster (shooting) performance. As far as image quality goe-well some would give a slight or even better advantage to the Canon, but for me that is not the only criteria to judge whether a camera is right for me or not.

Considering the price, there is no way I'd pay $700 for the Canon. But I would for the V3. Fortunately for me I was able to walk away with the W1 for $290!

Just my two bones...
