The "Popular Photography " magazine, known as the world largest publication for the subject, proclaimed Nikon D70 "camera of the year".
Is such award suprising, or largely expected?

There is no doubt that the D70 is a one of this years best cameras, however the significance of Popular Photography naming a camera of the year is about worthless. Pop Photog never has called any camera bad/poor/waste-of-money. I have a sneaking suspicion that they only have this award so they get mentioned in Nikon's ads. A DPreview (or any highly critical Magazine/Website) camera of the year would be MUCH more significant.

Several years ago they explained their policy in that matter in Ted Koppel's story. It goes samwhat like that:

In the past they clearly criticized a product. The vendor quickly made improvements, but bad opinion lasted for long and caused undeserved losses. Since then they write only about good stuff, and ignore the bad one.

On the other side, lately PopPhoto looks like shapeless, crappy trade propaganda swallowing anything what is paid for without any digesting.
Will my opinion last longer, than present state of the publication?

It's still a d*mn good camera and significant for what it offers at it's price point.

Just think, if every key-stroke was a shutter-press we would all be pros by now...

Pop Photo, as far as I've noticed, has provided absolutely no criteria for which cameras were judged. Were they looking for the best camera at any price, the best bang for the buck, the camera most likely to have a significant impact on the industry and/or the popularity of photography, the camera most likely to bring them advertising revenue?

For that matter, the concept of naming "camera of the year" while the year had three or four months left to go (in terms of the editorial lag time required to get the story into print) is rather peculiar. They must not have noticed that the Oscars, Tonys, Emmies, etc all cover the previous calendar year, not the one currently in progress.

So in the end, it looks pretty much like what it is - an advertising-driven decision.

The D70 gets my vote. It did much to bring DSRLs to the mass market. The 300D came out too soon for that award ;-)

Rather timid considering about a dozen other publications and digital photography organizations have made the same choice.

Re: Wonder How Much that Cost Nikon?!? ;-)

Considering almost every other publication made the same decision, this is a very stupid comment, especially considering it comes from someone who owns a camera from a company that if you looked up "marketing" or "spin doctors" in the dictionary, you would see Canon's name somewhere underneath those definitions. ;)

Wake up Brian. Just look at the car mags and "Car of the Year" awards. You buy those with many full page spreads.

The year before it was the D Rebel that was "Camera of the Year". Do you really go out and buy the "Camera of the Year" every year.

I know what goes on behind the scenes, it's just like politics and lots of money. But Hermit, there are alot of cameras, lots of camera companies, with lots of full page spreads, many of them Canon, and certainly more Canon ads, on TV and in those magazines, than there are Nikon ads. So by your definition, shouldn't a Canon camera, say the 20D, make the "Camera of the Year"?

Point is, the D70 is a great camera, and I bought the camera (and by the way, my first DSLR, not every "camera of year") way before the awards came.

Your post came across as if the D70 didn't deserve any accolades, and all the ones they got were paid for by Nikon.

I doubt you would have the same opinion if it was a Canon camera that got all the accolades, which would have been well-deserved as well as Canon makes great products. But news flash Hermit, there is more than one camera company that makes great equipment, many more.
Are you too naive to believe that? Of course not, so let's agree to disagree.

Where are you in Colorado anyway? I'm south of Denver, about 10 minutes north of Castle Rock.
