Best laptop screen-wise

That's news to me. My desktop is a hyperthreaded P4. I'll have to try turning it off sometimes to see if I detect any noticeable speed improvement in PS. I would have thought PS CS would take advantage of the virtual dual-processing.

What model number is your 16" notebook?

Dan
I love my Acer c300 tablet pc laptop, but the screen is simply
horrendous for reviewing photos. I need to find a laptop with a
much better screen to use for reviewing photos with clients when
I'm shooting.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with a great screen? I prefer less
than 17" but more that 12".

Thanks,
Dan

How do you turn off hyperthreading? I have a p-4 3.2 on a intel 915gev mother board?

thanks in advance

You wouldn't think so, would you? But it's true. I got a clue when I did a test between my old Vaio with a 2.2 gig processor and the new 3.0 Fujitsu. Wondering why it took longer for the latter to Focus Magic an image I did some googling and lo and behold, I turned off hyperthreading and it was much faster. I also noticed that, under HT, my processor was only being utilized at 55% (even though nothing else was going on). I think, though, that if you were doing a batch operation AND something else in Photoshop that performance gains would be seen.

You have to disable it in the BIOS (hit F2 on a laptop or the Delete key on the PC) as your system is booting up.

I use HP Compaq B3800, come with 15" Brightview screen, ATI Radoen
9700 graphic processor. Nice screen but image a bit bluish.

Does anyone can assist how to calibrate this bluish image.
I have the same problem with my HP nx 7000, ATI 9200 card. If you have the same options I have you can try opening the Display Properties window, clicking on the Advanced button, then selecting the Color Tab. If you have a color curve window select the Blue and bring if down a bit.

I think I screwed up my previous post. Anyhow, this is one heck of a laptop for photography and at a very sweet price but I would definitely upgrade the RAM to a gig from the 512 it comes with.

Thanks for the follow-up. How is the new notebook working out for you so far? Since I can't check it out in person, could you answer a couple of questions for me?

1. How is the touchpad? Is it centered under the spacebar / home row of keys (rather than the width of the laptop: a mistake too many make)? How is the vertical scrolling? I ask because I do NOT plan on using an external mouse, so a good touchpad is important to me.

2. How is the keyboard? I think most are good enough these days.

3. Is text readable on the screen at the video's native resolution?

4. Does contrast and/or colors shift when you alter your viewing angle to the screen?

5. Is the screen bright enough to produce a paper white?

6. Does the fan run often? When it does, is it loud? How hot does the notebook get in use?

7. What is the battery life?

Many thanks in advance. I see PC Mall has this model for $2400 with 1GB ram and an 80 GB hard drive.

The touchpad is centered right under the spacebar, yes. It's an excellent one, too, with neat features such if you 'touch and brush' from right to left along the top it will take you back a page and same thing to go forward (great for web-browsing). There's a nice scroll bar in between the left and right-click buttons and you can adjust the scroll speed in the software. The only thing I don't like is the ridge that runs smack through the middle of all three buttons. Perhaps I'm just used to Vaios that are pure-flat. Not a huge beef.
2. How is the keyboard? I think most are good enough these days.
The keyboard is the best I have ever used with one exception (but note I'm only comparing it to the Vaio which is known for having cheap-feeling keys): the Delete key is the second one over at the top right when I'm used to it being the first. Again, something I'll get used to.
3. Is text readable on the screen at the video's native resolution?
Text is very readable.
4. Does contrast and/or colors shift when you alter your viewing
angle to the screen?
Yes, but not very much. I'm always right in front of it, though.
5. Is the screen bright enough to produce a paper white?
Not sure because I don't know exactly what that means. I do know that it's even brighter looking than Sony's Xbrite screens. I'd wager money that you won't find a nicer screen on a 16-inch notebook.
6. Does the fan run often? When it does, is it loud? How hot does
the notebook get in use?
Yes, actually, and it IS quite loud, louder than the Vaios. And it blows out the left side of the laptop and does generate some heat. I would have to say not MORE heat than my Vaios did (and I've had two, the GRX670 and 700P). The sucker IS noisy, though!
7. What is the battery life?
Not sure but word in the web is it's not good especially if you're running it at full brightness. I almost always have it plugged in so it's not a huge issue for me. I would guess you'd be hard-pressed to get more than 1.5-2 hours with it on full brightness.
Many thanks in advance. I see PC Mall has this model for $2400

That's WAY too much moolah for it! Fry's has it on this weekend for $1550 but it'll cost you another couple hundred to get the extra RAM.

The only other quibble I have with it is the hinges on the screen are not stiff enough for me. I use it on my lap a lot and when I set it down and pick it back up again I have to be careful or the screen won't stay up.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for taking the time to answer all those questions. Everything sounds great except for battery life (which I can live with) and the fan noise (which may be a deal breaker).

Maybe the 15" models using the Intel 725 processor run less hot and get bettery battery life. I sure wish I could find a local shop that carries these so I could have a preview!

I see Fry's has an online store: outpost.com. Unfortunately, they don't list the 16" model there (guess that's an in-store special only).

The reason I like the 16 inchers is for editing photos. The 17's are just too wide and heavy to pack around but I've found the 16 to be a good compromise and found a backpack that holds it easily. The only other downside to this one is that it's almost ten pounds! I've yet to go traipsing across the world (but want to) and when I do I might rue the day I bought the thing.

If you know someone you trust in a town where they have Fry's you could have them buy one and ship it to you. Fry's is very good about their return policy and you have 15 days and there is no restocking charge. All you'd be out is the shipping. Just a thought.

Oh, any BTW ... I just listed my 16 inch Vaio last night on eBay. (Already got two emails from scammers, one from Nigeria ... what's UP with those people?)

... I finally decided to order a Sony Vaio VGN-A240 (customized version of the A250). Pentium 725 1.06 Ghz, 2 MB L2 cache, 400 Mhz FSB, 1 GB ram, 80 GB 5400 rpm hard drive, 15.4" 1280x880 X-brite screen, 802.11g wireless, CD-RW+DVD drive, and all the other standard stuff. It cost more than I wanted to spend, and more than the runners up (Toshiba M35 series and Fujitsu), but I wasn't able to find a Fujitsu locally and the Toshiba keyboard felt much worse than Sony's. The build quality seemed inferior as well.

As for the others... it's unbelievable how many braindead designs you find in laptops these days. One common mistake is to center the touchpad from the edges of the laptop rather than under the spacebar/home row where it belongs. Another is placing the power cord on the right or left side of the laptop rather than the back. Then there are the noisy fans and the

Apple really has it all over the winXP laptops, IMO. Unfortunately, I'm too heavily invested in XP software to convert to OSX now (not to mention a very expensive desktop), otherwise I'd have gone PowerBook all the way.

Thanks, Rejean. I already have a Crumpler Brian's Hot Tub (yep, that's its real name) backpack that will house a laptop plus camera gear. But carrying the laptop, extra battery, my 1D Mark II, 20D, and a few lenses, flash, etc. makes the backpack weigh so much I can barely get it on my back!

Dan
I see the nx7010 has a 15.4" screen which is a better size for me,
but reviews claim it is still quite a heavy/bulky laptop. Do you
have any trouble carrying it with your camera equipment?
You might be interested in one of these:

It's just big enough to fit a nx7000 (probably same size as 7010)
and makes carying a lot of gear easy.
