I feel the S75 is becoming a big dissapointment

Now, I know this post might be a little harsh, but I just had to
blow off some steam that was building for several long months ....

I bought the S70 back in February and used it for a month. It was
my first digicam and I had no previous experience in photography. I
was very happy with the image quality and the automatic settings
which produced great results.
One thing bothered me the most - the unbearble shatter lag. The
camera was so slow that it was very hard to shoot moving object
like kids or animals.

Then I stumbled into this site and read the S75 review. I was so
impressed by the professional tests and results that I decided to
sell my S70 and wait for the S75 that was due (as rumored) by the
end of March / start of April.

I figured that the S75 will include all the benefits and fix most
of the weaknesses of the S70. After all - the technology is already
there and has been used for over a year now.

Then Sony pushed the release date again and again and all this time
I was left camera-less, holding my breath and being patient.
During that time, I even considered buying the Canon G1 but after
reading some opinions I decided that I'm not going to spend 750$ on
a camera that will turn me into a Photoshop expert...

Finally the S75 hits the market and what happened ? Lower image
quality, noisy pictures, CA all over the place, overstaurated
colors and so on.
I already read some posts that suggest fixing the pictures using an
imaging software - I don't buy it, I don't think that I should sit
down and fix the faults of the camera for almost every picture I
take.

Now, I know that a lot will respond that it's possible to produce
great pictures when using the manual tuning and I know that an
experienced photographer could probably find the ways to go around
the problems.
But what about the rest of us ? What about those who simply want a
camera to take good pictures and not artistic creations ?

I think that many of the S75 users try to convince themselves that
it's not the camera - it's them. But let's face it - The S75 is
dissapointing. It's not what we expected and we should not just pay
the price and keep our mouth shut.

As for me, I have no idea what am I going to do now - maybe I'll
get an S70 ? Or should I wait for the S85 ?
I have an opposite experience about s75.

I have made photoes for many years with my Hasselblad and Pentax 67 and have allways been comfortable with High quality. I have also Used S70 from Sony, but also F505V which is terrific with their Carl Zeiss lenses and their special techniques. But S75 is the best I ever have used of Digital Cameraes in amateur class. And I can confirm that 14 Bits technique is, what uses in S75, is fantastic. It proves that pixels is not the only one importent for a good image, so I will never again have a camera with 12 Bits technology.
Regard from bent in Norway.

Hi
Correct me if I am wrong, S 70 in fact is more an autofocus
camera without much manual functions like s75? So I guess
these two cameras are for different class of users. You can't
really campare them, can you?

First, I'd like to thank everyone who contributed their opinion on
this matter, even the ones that don't agree with me :) It's always
good to hear others' side to get a better prespective.

From the responses I saw, I think it would be safe to roughly
diffrentiate between 2 types of photography : creative and
practical.
When you take creative photos you probably have lots of time, you
want to adjust all the possible settings to get that perfect touch
and that sepctacular effect.
By practical use I mean capturing the moment as accurately as
possible for future reference. Like taking pictures of your kid
playing soccer or celebrating his birthday, photographing special
places you visit and certain people you meet. In these moments you
mostly lack the excess time to fiddle with the camera in order to
produce great photos.

As for me, although I do like to take creative pictures from time
to time, most of my camera use is for practical shooting.
I travel a lot during my job and find myself more than once taking
quick pictures of a nice view from the hotel window just before
going out for a business meeting. Many of my photos were taken
while I took a walk around the city when I had a few hours between
flight connections.
In those situations, I do not have the time for manual balancing
and adjustments and I would be very dissapointed to come back home
and find out that the pictures do not represent the reality I tried
to capture. When you take a picture of a flower you can take dozens
of pictures until you get the right one, but when you want to
capture your child's face covered with icecream during a day at
Disneyland, you don't have a second chance.
This was my main reason for buying a digital camera - because with
film cameras you don't see what's wrong with the picture until it's
too late.

According to the responses I got here, it looks like the S75 whould
be a great camera for those creative shots, but I doubt it will
satisfy my need for those quick high quality shots. That's why "I"
feel dissapointed.

I'm gonna upload some pictures I took with my S70 using only
automatic mode during a quick strawl on the streets of Amsterdam
between flight connections. I think you'll get my point when you
see them.

I can not agree!
All the pictures I have take are exactly what they are in nature!

My rabbit is grey, my guineapig white with some spots, the flower
is red as on the picture....all the samples represents the TRUE
COLOURS!
Stop it enough with that rabbit!!!! ... jus' kidding 8^)
( However, whenever you do mention rabbit I think of the
hasenpfeffer I had a couple of nites ago....=)

I looked at your photos and they look just fine and I'm glad you're
enjoying your camera. This is your first digicam, right?
Have you tried ppl shots yet?
Thanks for that comment.
Yes tjis is my first digicam and I am very happy with it.
What are ppl shots??? Can you explain that to me?
Thanx

It turns out that the two cameras are different but that was not what we (S70 users) expected.

The S75 was supposed to be an upgrade to the S70 (hence the model name and number). Phil's review opens like that:

"The DSC-S75 is a progression from last years DSC-S70 ... Sony have introduced the S75 as a replacement (and improvement) over the original S70."

And that's what I expected - an improvement ...

"Quiet" colors like gray look fine, the problem is with the bright colors like red, green or blue.

Try it out, you can always return it if its not for you.
Oh can I ? It always amazes me to see that Americans in general think that what goes for them, goes for the rest of the world.

Over here (Europe) we don't have the option of "you can always return it" because here, if you paid for it, it's yours to keep. Go out the store and straight back in again and say that you changed your mind, they're gonna tell you "sorry to hear that" and that's it. You can try to sell it to someone else yourself (at half price) and that's about it. We don't have the luxury of 30 day return (with or without restocking fee). The moment we buy something, the stores couldn't care less if we like it or not, it's sold, period.

Even if you come home with your purchase and find it broken (DOA), the stores won't exchange it for another one, they just take it in for repair and you can wait weeks to get it back. Why not even exchange you wonder ? Because over here, everything with a warranty has a card inside, and the stores fill in that card with your name and address and the serial number of the appliance and manufacturers or importers don't give out new empty warranty cards, not even to storekeepers.

So for a lot of people here reading the forums, it's all we have to go on to decide whether we buy or not and hope that we take the right decision before spending our hard earned money, especially since we always have to pay a lot more for it too.

Have a nice day,
Royor

You took the words right out of my mouth...

In Israel we have the same problems. You cannot return something just because you "don't like the colors of the pictures", any salesman will look at you as if you're telling him a joke or something.

That's why buying a digicam at that price is not an easy decision, if I had the opportunity to "test drive" the S75 and THEN decide, I would have done so with no hesitation.

Mabel,

It would be great if you would post some pictures of Marin when you get your camera. Although I was born in the City, I grew up in Marin (Mill Valley, Sausalito) and spent over half my life there. I haven't been home for three years, so would love to see how it's doing.

Speaking as a non-photographer and a first-time digital camera owner (and one of the first people -- if not the first -- in this forum to actually own an S-75), I have to say I couldn't be happier with my S-75. I know the pros here have some complaints about the camera, but to my uneducated eyes, the images (in general) are great. I love the instant gratification of being able to see my shots immediately, of being able to take as many pictures as I want without worrying about wasting film or not having to wait (and pay) for film processing, of being able to learn from the "bad" ones and trying again. I find myself being more observant and trying to record interesting things that I see. I spent a half hour today trying to capture a shot of a gekko that was parked inside my kitchen window and an entire day trying to understand how to use the macro setting by taking pictures of flowers around my house.

So you be the judge yourself and don't let these guys scare you!

Hi Helen,

I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your choice.
The advantages you talk about are shared by all digital cameras :)

I'd suggest that if anyone has the opportunity to try the camera before buying or buying the camera from a place with a good return policy to go ahead and try it.
You can never know until you actually try it for yourself.

I have a P50, my first digicam, I have always been an SLR fan although not a pro I think I take a fairly decent shot considering it's not my line of work, I took thousands of photos with my SLR and spent an untold amount of money on film and getting them developed over a 20 year period but have only had my digicam under a week and have taken over 250 shots and am totally blown away with the quality I am getting and will most likely leave my SLR in my closet for a very long time (and it still has a roll of film in it).I can't see how you could be dissapointed with S75,I have some shots posted at http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/psktm with S75 shots and P50 pics and I'm not dissapointed with them at all.

All these pictures were taken in the first two days of owning my
camera, and I don't feel that they're all that bad. So I'm
confused about all this dissapointment...

Did you take a look at the red flower on my homepage?
I think there is no problem with the red colour.

It less obvious when doing macros because you have a different prespective.

Take a look at this picture:

Look closely at the red flowers on the bottom. Does it look like natural colors ?

BTW - Look at the gloved hands of the left bush to see a good (bad) example of CA.

Royor -

I can only say that I feel sorry for the Europeans. I like the scenery, but I wouldn't want to buy my consumer products there!

Bahahahahahahahahahahah!!©

You guys need a serious return policy.

All I can say is that I've seen flowers that color. It's rather difficult to say "Those flowers don't look the right color" when we've not been there to actually see them. Other than that, the colors don't bug me in that shot and do not seem overly or unpleasingly blown out.

Look in any magazine about photography, and check out the samples of the photographers' goods. Vivid color is everything for many of them.

What I see as more of a problem to reality is that there isn't enough resolution in that particular image to see small detail. This is to me often more important than color itself. Colors I can live with or correct on my own. But you can't get more detail any other way than by increasing resolution and sensor size.

Hi Helen and everyone here,

I can't get over this thread. Talk about controversy. All the feedback/info here has been so helpful. Thanks god it's on line...could have broken out into a fist fight. Got my camera, shots some pictures....feel so much better. Easy to use and photos look great!! Thanks for holding my hand a little.
