I love my Acer c300 tablet pc laptop, but the screen is simply horrendous for reviewing photos. I need to find a laptop with a much better screen to use for reviewing photos with clients when I'm shooting.

Can anyone recommend a laptop with a great screen? I prefer less than 17" but more that 12".

Thanks,
Dan

Check out the Fujitsu! A to B comparisons at Fry's sold me on it and
I haven't been disappointed at all.

Good luck.

I use HP Compaq B3800, come with 15" Brightview screen, ATI Radoen 9700 graphic processor. Nice screen but image a bit bluish.

Does anyone can assist how to calibrate this bluish image.

Hey Dan,

i recommend a laptop with a glossy screen surface. I just purchased a Hypersonic Aviator and it has the glossy screen and its by far the best display I've seen, desktop or laptop.

Some folks say they don't like the reflections that a glossy screen has but to me thats not a problem... its just not that bad and the crispness, vivid color and dark blacks make working with images a pleasure.

I know Sony also has the glossy screens.

Jack,

I checked out their website. From what I can tell, it appears the glossy screen is only available as a 17". If that's the case, it's a deal killer for me as I tried living with an HP 17" laptop for a while and ended up having to return it: simply too bulky and heavy for my purposes (I do a lot of travel and so need portability). Have you seen one of their 15.4" screens?

Thanks for the tip. I'll check out the Sony models as well.

I had an HP zd7168cl for awhile, but ended up returning it at it was much too heavy and bulky for my purposes (too much to lug it plus my camera gear around). Nice screen, though.

I see the nx7010 has a 15.4" screen which is a better size for me, but reviews claim it is still quite a heavy/bulky laptop. Do you have any trouble carrying it with your camera equipment? How is the battery life?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Nik,

I suppose there's no reason why it couldn't be calibrated with an Gretag-Macbeth Eye1 Display puck (or similar unit). I use this to calibrate my Viewsonic VX2000 LCD screen and it works fine for color (does not, however, let me set black/white points; guess you need a CRT for that).

You're welcome Dan, I think you will find that the newer X-Brite Screens on Fujitsu & Sony are very nice but I read that they use more battery power so there are trade offs. Pops

Its weight is an average 7 lbs for this kind of business laptop. Not too heavy not too light either. Comfortable for a man.

Actual battery life is an excellent 3.5 hours. It also has all kinds of connections, 3 USBs, firewire, bluetooth, Secure Digital slot, microphone jack, audio out jack, external monitor connector, S-Video, Ethernet, PC card slot, infrared port etc.

Comes with either a Toshiba CD-RW or DVD-RW drive, ATI 9200 64MB, excellent JBL speakers and much more.

Very good laptop indeed and do not forget its wide high resolution 15.4" screen ideal for graphics and spreadsheets.

I've used Sony Viaos for the past few years and have had several problems with them. The last one I had in the shop the tech told me by far and away the best-built laptop out there (besides IBM) is Fujitsu. I decided to check them out at my local Fry's store and WOW! Fabulous screen! I chose the 16 inch model but they make them in the 15 and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better screen for photography. INHO. Don't know if any other chain retailer carries them, though ... Fry's is the only place I've seen them apart from the web.

Tried CompUSA, Circuit City, and Best Buy. No other local chains available , so I'll have to buy blind in this case.

What model number is your 16" notebook?

There are so many different models! Mine is the N5010. The one thing I"m not entirely stoked about it is that it's hyper-threaded which doesn't really help that much in straight PSCS work so I've found it's better to turn it off. I've also discovered that bumping the RAM from 512 to 1024 helps considerably. But it's the screen that really sets it apart from even the Vaios.

my vote is for the Sony VAIO "xbrite" screens or whatever they call them, almost look like they have a piece of "glass" over it. definitely the brightest and sharpest I have seen...
