My serial port doesn't seem to be working. Once or twice picture gear recognized it but usually doesn't. What's the deal? Has this happened to
anybody else? Suggestions are sure welcome. thank

I found I had to make sure the plug was firmly in the F505 before it would be "seen" by Picturegear. It doesn't always make a good connection..even the USB has to be firmly plugged in.

I just got an f505 and have used the serial port three times to load pics.
Once it failed, I shut down the computer and restarted with everything
connected and it worked. I am no expert with computers, but I think
that for windows to detect a new device, it has to be connected at start-up.
Hope this helps,

Vern

I used to use the serial port and had trouble. If connection seemed to fail I had to come out of Picturegear, have the camera on and get back into Picturegear. However, using the top menu bar and the drop down menu for connecting was a lot more reliable than using the menu on the left of the screen.

Better still, get Win 98 and use the USB connector. Of course you'l need a USB input on the PC! It is very much faster. There are other connections available but I have not used them. Almost anything is better than a serial connection.

At this moment Sony have not made software available for Win 2000.

Hi Jamie

Just as a reference, I use the serial connection at work, as my PC at work has Win95 on it. My experiance is that the serial works just fine without a reboot of the PC each time I plug the camera in, but Picture Gear will need to be restarted if already running when the camera is connected.

I had a similar problem and took to removing and re-inserting the serial cable, giving it a slight "twisty wiggle" as I inserted it into the camera. It worked, sporadicaly, then failed to work at all - reason, I'd blown my COM port! My motherboard cant take new ones so I'm up for a new board (and other parts to keep everything compatible. Naturally, I'll go for USB on the new board.

MORAL: Never insert the serial cable unless everything is turned off.
