Just about 99% sold on the D70 now but would like to know from you guys and gals, the realtime users. Jjust how often does the moire present a problem in your shots? Are there any fixes in the later D70's that improve it? Be interested in your replies, Regards, Peter

I wouldn't worry about it. I have never encountered it and when i've seen ot in others photos you have too look hard for it

I've seen it a couple of times in several thousand shots. It results from the use in the D70 of a weak antialiasing filter in front of the imaging sensor. Nikon employed a weak filter to give sharper images than you would get with a stronger filter. I think they made a wise compromise.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have any film.

In over 3000 pictures, I've still never seen moire. I thought I'd get it when I was taking a photo of my son in his pram, which has a really close woven black/grey material... Absolutely nothing.

Check out the images in this forum, and really don't worry about moire.

It depends on what you shoot I guess. I do a lot of nature photography, event photography and lots of snaps. Subject matter does make a difference.

Most examples I've seen on the 'net that have noticeable moire are architecture shots. I guess with fashion it could be a problem too, from time to time.

Dennis.

A coincidence - I had the same prob. shooting the same building in HK!

The prob. appears worst when shooting on wide angle.
This seems to be the only one I've got after hundreds of shots. It
really depends on the subject and angle of light.

moire ? what moire ?? I've got 8000+ frames on my D70 and I've seen exactly 1 bad case of moire. The moire was very visible and noticeable on that one. About 3 more not-hard-to-find moire pics, but noticalbe unless you're looking for it. About half a dozen more with moire, but you really have to look carefully for it to find. Otherwise, moire ? what moire???

It has only noticably reared its head in 1 photo since I bought the camera, so as long as you don't shoot corrogated rooflines on factories from hot air balloons, you should be right.

It has never ruined the photo though. A small soften will fix the problem in seconds. Moire is no more. (couldn't resist)

I think it is pretty unanimous from the posts so far. Does it happen? Yes. Does it happen often? Nope, a significant number of D70 owners have never experienced it. Will it ruin a photo? Unlikely to, and generally you know the shots which risk moire.

Good luck

Adam

Thanks alot everyone, I get the general message that it's not a problem! I'll mainly be doing nature shots anyway so may never see it, I'll just make sure I keep away from Hong Kong :) Peter

... has a high probability of occurring when shooting someone wearing plain business shirts:

I'm not sure if later units exhibit this problem or not - mine was purchased in March 2004.

Good luck!
