Hello there,

I'm a photography enthusiast and I'm looking forward to learn more about pictures and photography. I own a Canon SD-100 but now I really need something more powerful...

I've checked the Canon G6 and I like it (though I've just read some topics about image blurring on the right side). I've also checked the Pro1 and since both cameras have similar price ranges I'd like some advice in order to decide which one to buy...

Many thanks in advance,

Luiz Fernando

Check the archives. There are a couple of long discussions of the topic.

Luiz,
if you can, wait on till next spring.

If you have to buy now, consider the G6. The G6 seems to deliver well what you can expect from a digicam of this design parameters and price band.

The PRO1, on the other hand, will get an updated successor by spring 2005 - a judgement based on averaging over a lot of conjectures ventured in many a thread in this forum.

The present design of the PRO1 seems to be bug ridden to a smaller or larger degree, depending on the correspondents that air their views in this or other news groups. Some of the reported problems are most likely due to faulty design and or manufacturing quality. An updated PRO1 would tackle most of these problems if Canon can be judged by past performance. A 'PRO 2' with faster low light focusing, faster overall timings, dust proof lens, and reduced lens wobble would make you feel a bit silliy to not have waited on, perhaps.

As you have done some research by yourself you may be aware of the gist of my missive already.

And take my statements with a grain of salt as they are not backed up with personal experience of ownership of the G6 or PRO1.

But one follows the discussions of new models with interest if one is still shooting away happily with a Canon G2 as I confess to be doing.

Sure, I am looking for a replacement eventually. Personally the reduced size of the G6 seems to be worth consideration as well, while the PRO1 is noticably bulkier and heavier.

I wonder if these comments will spark up responses of more knowledgable referents.
Regards, Guenter

Replaced my G2 (now the wife's camera) with a G6...have taken lots of photos...still very pleased....if you get accessory lenses..get the Canon brand...they work very nicely with the G6.

for night shots,

I took this one of my daughter on my G6 a couple of days ago. It was on an outdoor patio, and the LCD wasn't visible ... way too dark. It might've been difficult and/or impossible to frame this shot with an EVF.

another example where EVFs might have difficulty is night time skyline shots, like this time exposure night shot from Florida, just after dusk.

Personally, I'm enjoying the G6, and I liked my G3 before that. I'd probably like the pro1 just fine too, but I based my decision to replace my lost G3 with a G6 on the fact that the G6 was a little cheaper, a little lighter/smaller, a little faster (F2.0 instead of F2.4), and on the fact that occasionally EVFs don't work. Of course, the Pro1 has a 7x zoom and a 28mm wide, both of which are really nice. I probably would've been happy with either camera ...

Hi Fernando, I had this question some time ago and got one Pro 1. It is a lot better than the G6 but it is a little biger than the G6. Get the G6 if you want to keep the portability that you have with you SD-100 (Ihave one S-400) or get the Pro 1 if you realy want some thing more than your SD-100.

Don´t care about people that dosen´t have one Pro 1 and tell bad things about it. It is not a pefect camera but no one are. Look at this thread from Marco Nero to help you chose you new camera. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=11136560
