Hello, all CanonS-300’s adorers!

This toy is really nice. And I would like to get it as well. The fact is clear that this camera is the compromise among size, variety of the features and the quality. Unfortunately, we can not say that about the price(!). But we have no choice – the fun and the price: they are almost always traveling together. Anyway, before to get a seat in your large and crowded boat I would like to ask you just one “simple” question. And this one is just regarding sharpness of the picture from this tiny toy. Actually S-300 is much more better than its little brothers S-100/110v: the new primary color filter installed by Canon in S-300 works very well and therefore there is no blue cast, colors well saturated and white balance works in proper way. One owner of this camera politely introduced for all of us his own photo album in this forum and you can see it at http://www.fototime.com/inv/DABF7C5290C0788 . With my judgement all of these pictures are little bit out of focus. So, my question is – What is that? May be it is neither a personal photography techniques (?), a wrong behavior from his own camera (?), a general problem of this model (?) or the problem of all 2 Mp cameras (?). If your have some more time please visit to another photo gallery and be sure that all pictures there have been made with Canon G-1. I remember that S-300 just has a 2.1 Mp and it is a compromise between the variety of settings and quality but it shouldn’t be as much as we have from these two different photo galleries. With my judgement such great difference is unacceptable. http://CanonG1.free.fr

So much words have been pronounced in this forum regarding the interrelation between quantity of Mp and size of printouts. My opinion – it doesn’t matter which size of printouts I can get with any resolution of my camera! I am very much considering the fact that we are not able to get acceptable sharpness and well-detailed image neither with Canon S-300 (?) or 2.1 Mp cameras at all.

I found Canon S-300 at http://www.buydig.com for $514. (Canon G-1 for just $638 and S 100 for $410). The warranty they provide comprising 90 days for parts and 1year for labor. What does it mean? May be these guys sell so called gray market stuff (neither refurbished or something else)
All commentaries will be awaited and acceptable. And interesting too………….

Hi Valad,

I tried to go to the link you prvided for the S300 pic's but all I get is an error message.

I am the the proud owner of a S300. I've only had it about 5 days and NO it is not always out of focus...at least not with my camera. Did you read Phils reviev? He speaks of images being a tad bit soft...but this is Canon technique so that you have the option of sharenping to your own taste. I love this camera. The color is right on the money, white balance woks well and it has a great little body. Very portable and just as good as any 2MG...and better than some.....Phil rated it better than the 950.

I also have Oly 2100UZ and the pics are super sharp and this is also a 2 MP camera...maybe its the photographer.....who has shakey hands?

Hello, Carmen.

I am so glad you are satisfied with Canon S300. I checked the link I've given to visit the gallery of pictures from S300 (Author - Oren) and it works very well. Please, try to visit again this site with the reason to compare these instances with your own. Anyway, thanks for the reply.
Vlad.

Hi Again Vlad,
Thanks I found the link...It must have me or my computer...who knows.
I will agree some of the pictures look a liitle soft and 1 or 2 look out of

focus. Maybe hand shake or the peson moved. Some of them look a little dark..perhaps the person should have used the flash, maybe some of them should have been shot in manual mode....so that a few adjustments could have been made...also did you take note of the image size. I shoot all pic's in super fine !600x1200. They look really good at this setting. I leave the flash on so that the camera can use it, if it feel is needs it.

Good Luck, You should buy it and give it a try...I don't think you'll be to disappointed

Carmen!

First of all thank you very much for your pespond. It was a pleasure to read that the sharpness of your own pics are much better. I've learned S300 depth review very carefully. Quality and particularly the sharpness of Pics from this site's Canon S300 gallery is quite acceptable. In other words their quality is what I need for my purposes.

I know from the forum that Oren, author of these unsharp images, bought his S300 on line for just $500 while street price is $600. There is some expression: "Free cheese is just in the mouse trap"! But reality is $500 it is not free! I don't want to pay $500 and get the result like Oren. That is all! If you don't mind I"ll give you some other expression: "Grasping person pays twice"! Why I say all of that to you? I just wanted to ask you - Did you buy your "Toy" via the Internet or from official distributors like "WiZ", "Staples" or whatever else?
My regards and the best wishes.
Vlad.

Hi Again,

I also purhased my camera online from Ritz Camera for a total of 507.00 (this price includes shipping/tax)...it was originally 599.00..they price matched the price.
Enjoy,
Carmen

Hi, Oren!

Be sure I didn't want to hurt your feelings regarding quality of your pics. My personal concern with this matter is just the sharpness. All other conditions with my judgement are veeeeeery well! Is your opinion regarding the sharpness - everything fine? You know.....: I would like to say that the life is so complicated thing and therefore what is perfectly OK for someone, for another one is the death. And how you can see from our discussion I'm not alone in my belief. Unfortunately, all your pics are slightly out in focus and may be one image where the good looking girl seating near the table has an acceptable sharpness. And this pic has been made with a flash.
If you have some other pics they will be so interesting for all of us.
Enjoy your camera.
Vlad.

I agree with Vlad. Paying $500-$600 for pictures that are not sharp sucks. Then you will pay another $500-$600 when Canon comes out with a better model digital elph a year or 2 from now. Remember you also have to pay for accessories that are not cheap ie camera bag, camera case, CF cards ...etc. When I pay all that money I expect better picture quality. You guys might want to wait for the Nikon 775 which is the size of the digital elphs and might offer better picture quality.

Tehre are a lot of pluses to the s300...

35 wide instead of 38
Movie clip mode.

95% steel !!!

Fucos assist in low light....
G-R-G-B CCD which so far i noticed produced better images.

A bit faster lense, shutter 1/1500

I think its smaller in overall. Flat that you can put confortablly in the pocket.

Fast operation...

the 775 isnt in stock yet !!!

And yadda yadda.

Oren.

When is the Nikon 775 due out and where can I get specs on it? How is it supposed to compare to the S100 & S110?

I am contemplating buying the S110 ( I have been using my friends S100) and wondered if there is a comparison chart between the S100 & the S110? Is teh added cosat of the S110 worth it (S100's are going for high $300's)

Tnx

Hello, all CanonS-300’s adorers!
This toy is really nice. And I would like to get it as well. The
fact is clear that this camera is the compromise among size,
variety of the features and the quality. Unfortunately, we can not
say that about the price(!). But we have no choice – the fun and
the price: they are almost always traveling together. Anyway,
before to get a seat in your large and crowded boat I would like to
ask you just one “simple” question. And this one is just regarding
sharpness of the picture from this tiny toy. Actually S-300 is much
more better than its little brothers S-100/110v: the new primary
color filter installed by Canon in S-300 works very well and
therefore there is no blue cast, colors well saturated and white
balance works in proper way. One owner of this camera politely
introduced for all of us his own photo album in this forum and you
can see it at http://www.fototime.com/inv/DABF7C5290C0788 . With my
judgement all of these pictures are little bit out of focus. So, my
question is – What is that? May be it is neither a personal
photography techniques (?), a wrong behavior from his own camera
(?), a general problem of this model (?) or the problem of all 2
Mp cameras (?). If your have some more time please visit to another
photo gallery and be sure that all pictures there have been made
with Canon G-1. I remember that S-300 just has a 2.1 Mp and it is a
compromise between the variety of settings and quality but it
shouldn’t be as much as we have from these two different photo
galleries. With my judgement such great difference is unacceptable.

So much words have been pronounced in this forum regarding the
interrelation between quantity of Mp and size of printouts. My
opinion – it doesn’t matter which size of printouts I can get with
any resolution of my camera! I am very much considering the fact
that we are not able to get acceptable sharpness and well-detailed
image neither with Canon S-300 (?) or 2.1 Mp cameras at all.
I found Canon S-300 at http://www.buydig.com for $514. (Canon G-1 for
just $638 and S 100 for $410). The warranty they provide comprising
90 days for parts and 1year for labor. What does it mean? May be
these guys sell so called gray market stuff (neither refurbished or
something else)
All commentaries will be awaited and acceptable. And interesting
too………….

Hello, guys!

I'm so pleased that this discassion is interesting for all of you. Thank you very much for your pesponds and comments.

No doubt the Canon S300 is veeeeery interesting and well improved camera. For every days shoots this machine is quite acceptable. No one belittles its advantages! But unfortunately there is nothing perfect in this world. And S300 is not exception. I suppose the autofocus is one of the problem of this so precisely made device. I saw in this forum a photo album where the owner of S300 and Nikon 880 makes the comparison both of them. He introduced gallery of pics. What is the conclusion?! Conclusion is the autofocus of Canon S300 sucks......: just 3 pics from 10 have a good sharpness and consequently well-detailed image. All pics from Nikon are with perfect sharpness. (I'm so sorry I have no link to this gallery for your examination). Don't keep in mind I agitate you with Nikon. It's everyone's personal decision. I think it's so risky to buy the device like that from not well-known company online. Even though their price is notably less. Don't forget an expression: "I am not so rich to buy cheap stuff"! When you are going to buy via the Internet neither DVD, monitor, audio or whatever else based on well-known technology at the present days your risk - is minimal. But digital fotography is just an infant and the trying to get its product from unknown source is the great mistake. So many people have a problems with their own digicams. But problems just begin: endless talks with company representatives and tech, restocking fee, delivery expenses, awaiting and definitely your own hemorrhoids with all of these circumstances.

My birthday is coming very soon and I am going to get a present for myself with S300. I am not going to waiting for the perfect camera from Canon any longer. The life is so short and no one knows what will happen tomorrow. I'll get this toy but just from source with very good reputation: CompUSA, WIZ, Staples...... And if something wrong with this machine in first 2 or 3 weeks I'll be exchange this device till times as I get what I want for my own money. So please, wish me good luck!

Vlad.

The Nikon 775 is coming out this year, in a few months. Some people on the Nikon forum have preordered it for less than $400.00. I think it has the Nikon 880 lense.
