My fourth day with the 20D and I must say this camera is Saweet! Still getting used to it but noticing that my keeper rate for in-flight shots is going to be much higher than I anticipated! I just love how the focus gets better if you're a little off when you start a burst. I've been shooting with all focus points active, usually iso 400 (for high shutter speed) and mostly at f8 in Av mode with the 100-400L in RAW / AI Servo. Cheers, Rod

Yup, you're making that machine rock, Rod. Or maybe I should say your're making it sing!!!

Great job on the timing and compositions. Beautiful light too!

I am feeling jealous!! I received my second 100-400 today and looks a lot sharper than my first one (returned).

Did you take those photos handheld, monopod, or tripod?

If monopod, what combination? (Monopod & head)

Thanks Mark,

I took a look at your galleries and some great images there. Like the site you made outside of Pbase. Rod

These are all handheld. I've found my tripod for inflight shots to limiting and not necessary. thanks, Rod

Thanks Natalia,

When shooting birds in-flight, I turn IS "off" (on the 100-400L) because I'm using such high shutter speeds. I find it unnecessary and it will actually slow down the focus acquisition. I have a feeling it would interfere with focal prediction as well in AI Servo. For still shots, I always use Mode one and for panning objects like a car mode two.

Don't forget to have your limiter switch set correctly. Normally that kind of takes care of itself as you will try to focus on something close and it won't focus... then you switch it to 1.8 to infinity. Rod
wow, Rod. I always enjoy your bird shots. I can't wait to try out
my 100-400mm IS L in good light shooting birds...By the way do you
have IS on? If "yes", which one?

Rod,

First off let me compliment you on a couple of great images. You really nailed the exposure on that Snowy Egret - they are very easy to blow out.

I've noticed my keeper rate increase as well. In particular, I've noticed that it's easier to get good images with smaller birds than the 10D was. I guess it just tracks better. Still my keeper rate for larger birds has been better as well, but I'm getting some images of smaller birds that I might not have been able to get at all with the 10D.

Thank you,

They are beautiful and funky looking all rolled up in one. I was actually waiting for these Spoonbills today. I was sitting next to a POD of egrets (snowy and great) and Ibis's and I felt like I was duck hunting with decoys. Any Spoonbills that saw this Pod would beline for it and fly right into it. That's how I got this pic.
I love that second picture! What a beautiful creature.

Thanks Paul,

Shooting in RAW sure helps. It's such a pleasure to bump down the exposure a little in Photoshop to find "all" of the detail still there. Unlike when this happens with JPG's.

I tried configuring C.Fn-04 to #3 and found that all it did was move my focus to the AE Lock. I didn't find it very useful. Today I just cruised around in AI Servo and if I found a still subject, I moved to One Shot and ISO 100. I'm getting faster though. Cheers, Rod
The light looks really nice in the snowy egret shot and of course
you did a great job capturing it.

Thanks Ed,

Those are great pictures you posted. I was pleased that I'm basically seeing the improvement right out of the box. I look forward to even more consistancy once I've spent a little time with the camera. Cheers, Rod
