Is the G1 Ugly?

I'm looking for a 3 MP camera in the $700 price range and the G1 seems to be the best buy and most flexible. I have just one complaint besides the ones mentioned in the review. Do anyone else find this camera ugly? It kind of has the shape of one of those disposable cardboard cameras. It seems like Canon put a lot of thought into all other design parameters except asthetics. Does anyone know when a updated version of this camera is due out?

Thanks

I think it's more old Leica-like/tank-like, than cardboard box. Except for the ridiculous grip (or lack of), I like the looks.

it's kinda ugly... not too ugly though...

it's looks are actually an advantage... i had the sony f505v before my g1, and simply couldn't take it out in public without everyone wanting to touch it and play with it...

if you're looking for a camera that will have the "WOW" affect when you whip it out of the bag, g1 is not the one... for pictures it'll give you all the "WOW" you can handle...

Personally, I happen to prefer the looks of the G1 over many of the other cameras available. It has the traditional styling of a classic rangefinder that I find very appealing...understated and simple.
But, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Looks are very subjective. I think the G1 has a nice retro look that I prefer to the current fad of making cameras that look like they might jump into hyperspace at any moment. :)

I actually like the looks as well. I was trying to decide between the olympus sony nikon and G1. For looks, I thought the G1 was the best. This was an insignificant factor in my decision to get this camera.

As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder... However some things would rarely cause debate... like Julia Roberts or
or Jodi Foster etc etc.. Mark

Absolutely not for me.

I like simple, classical styles, rather than sexy, morden styles.

So I bought this:

Instead of this:

Plus, image quality is far more important.

Actually at first look, it did king of looked boxy to me. But when I had the hard case put on it, the camera looked great! It had that retro look of my father's camera where the leather casing snaps to the body. It really looks nice to me.

If clean lines, sypmlicity and old style are to your liking the camera looks good, If on the other hand you want innovative, stylish, trendi for looks - there may be better looking cameras. Cameras with more interesting look include the 995, Sony505v and fuji 4900 and 4700 (though the last once are only 2.5meg pixles). There are the newer sonys look similar and the Olympus are much uglier in terms of proportion and color. My taste is not that great so look around and tell us how far is yours than mine. If it's too far one of us may have a problem...

I never thought so. However, if you are going to spend $700 US on a camera and its physical attractiveness is a main concern, you've got too much money buddy!

Very funny! :o) I like the classic looks of the G1 also. My first impression was that it was boring, but the look grows on you!

Do anyone else find this camera ugly?
I'd choose words like "Classic" and "Clean Lines", but I can understand why someone else might say "Ugly".

Fortunately, it doesn't really matter because most of us want to take photos WITH the G1 - not OF the G1.

Isn't the quality of the pictures and the functions of a camera much more important then what it looks like ????

A good, classic, well-tailored suit rarely goes out of style, but trendy clothes are just that. A "Nehru" jacket could keep you warm, but would you be caught dead in one today? Not unless your name is Austin Powers...

Is the G1 ugly? Come on, I bought the G1 for its functions.
If I wanted a beautiful body, I would run after Kathrin Zeta Jones ! ! !
; )

Anyway, I like the body of the G1.I have no complaints except the 2 dead pixels on the LCD ! ! !

Yes, I agree with you. I am sometimes ashamed to go outside with my G1, and people have made fun of me. In Salamanca (Spain) a group of students was so mean that I had to quickly get into a taxi to escape their taunting. One of them wanted to know if I had any "hot pixels" to spare. When I got to Cordoba, other tourists were laughing when I bashfully took the G1 out of its case and tried to shoot some pictures. I rapidly put it away and used my Nikon instead... this problem is getting me depressed! If other G1 users have experienced this type of thing, please let me know, I am trying to organize a G1 Support Group here in Miami.

Yes, Obviously the functionality, quality, and value are the most important qualities of a camera. I was just curious as to what others thought of the asthetics of the camera.

I now see that a lot of people have formed emotional bonds with the G1. Sorry if I offended anyone. Ugly may have been a poor choice of word. I should have asked "is the G1 Quadralaterally challenged?"

Actually after looking at the other Canon consumer digital cameras the G1 is one of their least boxy.

I was thinking along the lines of Volvo. They made some quality, safe cars for years that looked like boxes. Now they have designed the same features and qualities into cars that are much more stylish. I'm not advocating style over substance, but its not an engineering tradeoff in this case so why not give us both?

The G1 is still at the top of my list, especially now that I know retro is in!
