Startling discovery about trolls

Second, seriously, I don't put Ger Bee, Dan Frederiksen, or Steve
Giovenella in the same class as Jesus or Galileo.
Hehe perhaps, but the point is how would you know? As they didn't know.
But you have retracted the troll label so you have already answered this.

I am happy to hear that you would not have banned these people. From what I can tell of the little I have read of these posts the people weren't crazed. Dan was allegedly banned for using profanity but what did the others on your list do?

And should profanity be a reason to be banned for life?
Then no one from new york can post here : )

Well as one of the person who was in a way of Jacques while he was in the trolling moods to the Sigma forum...due to the respect of the passed away and sincerely wishing his soul in peace, I would not digging up his posts of what he refered to me... Joe is right about this one.
The outpouring of responses to his death (to which I did not
contribute, for no reason in particular) indicates that his posts
actually got people thinking, instead of just making them mad.

However rude jacques may have been at times, I think your glib
reference to his death is more offensive by far. I enjoy many of
your posts, but you may want to think about this one.
As I said, jacques meertens was mostly serious and useful, with
occasional episodes of trolling. I think he was more of the old
school "criticism has to hurt" mentality than an sctual malicious
troll. But he did hurt a lot of people.

Jacques used one of the "cult cameras", the Fuji S2. Those forums
tend be dominated by a rather small, tight knit core of regulars
which actually get like a little family. Jacques was part of the
Fuji SLR forum family.

So, when he passed, there was an enormous outpouring on that forum.
Even the people he ripped into made tributes.

I was a little too hasty there. From that post I clicked on his profile and his threads under that name are still there, so you probably knew that already.

Still that one post, particularly the last paragraph, is revealing.

I like this line that provoked him about the Olympus E-1 : )

"Yes the E1 has nice weather sealing but so does a bag of dog food in a bin liner."

Although inflamatory I agree with the sentiment. 4/3 is the wrong way for sensor size. It has to go upwards.

Bob's not like Ger, Dan, Steve (SG10). His Liquid_Alimpus and
Orimpus accounts, and every single one of the posts he made under
those names were deleted.
Not sure if you meant every single one of the posts he made under
those two names above, or all names, were deleted. Because here's
one under his Iracariaus name:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1018&message=10333818
Yeah, that's a mild one. Most of Bob's "Iracariaus" posts are still there. Only the last few were deleted, the ones about the torture, mutilation, and sexual abuse of people's loved ones.

All the "Liquid_Alimpus" and "Orimpus" posts were deleted (along with the accounts), probably because at that point Bob was posting nothing but the graphic abuse stuff.

I don't know that I'd publish that list, if I had collected it. I
think we'd suddenly see this thread go crazy!

I'm curious myself, of course. Joe is like our own Carnivore,
Strict vegetarian, actually ;) ;)
the
FBI's system for tracking everything we ever do or say... ;-)
3 dozen people, and half of those are because people heard I troll atched and sent me sightings.

My list of people that I like (or at least find interesting enough to stay in touch with) is over 4000 people. Obviously, not all from dpReview.

Psychiatry, in the area of personality disorders.
I would say Psychology is more appropriate. Psychiatry may fit only
if the posters behave the same way in person, or if they are just
letting out behaviors they are trying to suppress in real life. The
anonymity factor in internet forums and chat rooms could have an
effect on these persons' behavior.
Well, the two sciences overlap, don't they?

Perhaps this very anonymity factor in internet forums and chat rooms is creating a new category/classification for the DSM-IV.

Joe,

Thanks for the tons of good info.
Post apocolyptic series called Jeremiah. Made for cable, aired on
ShowTime.
Hmm. I don't watch much TV these days (and no ShowTime).

Joe, have you seen "Jeremiah"? Is it as well written as B5 (at least seasons 2-4) was? Maybe it didn't have enough time to build up, but I wasn't all that thrilled with "Crusade".

In terms of quirky Sci Fi, I thought Joss Whedon's "Firefly" was more interesting to watch than "Crusade", on average. Of course, JMS had a much larger story to develop than Joss appeared to be doing.

Hmm: Joe S Wisniewski, Joe S and Joss W ...

If I changed my first name to start with "Jo" or last name to have a "W", then would I suddenly acquire the desire/ability to write prolifically? :-)

Severian

PS: network execs seem to have taken G'Kar's words as an edict for the writers/producers/actors of these creative little shows. "You will know fear, you will know pain .. then you will die".

Yup, to some extent.

Really? I thought they only lack some ethics...How interesting.

Well, we could help preserve peoples' lives then by feeding those trolls. Eventually, bills shall be passed to protect the rights of the trolls to exist in internet fora. What's next? A bill to ban or support troll marriage? Awww! ;-)

Since we're into interesting observations I just thought of
historic 'trolls' to add to the list. The most famous of which must
be Jesus who was banned for trolling quite a bit. Can't recall
precisely if Galileo was banned in the same sense but he was at
least put up for it. I'm sure you can think of others.
Maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions on unpopular views.
No, we shouldn't.

Just like Galileo was banned and persecuted for his unpopular views, today we're seeing a similar phenomenon with Ernst Zundel, who has been imprisoned in Canada.

"Ernst Zundel is being held in solitary confinement solely for the non-violent expression of his political views.”
  • Canadian Association for Free Expression (CAFE)
"Zundel — who did this country a favour by wiping off the books our disgraceful False News laws — has never once been convicted of a criminal offence in this country, never once found to have violated the hate crime laws that rest snugly around the throat of free expression in this country."

Goodbyte,

You declare you’re in a “neutral zone” but you seem quite vocal and opinionated. Why don’t you just tell us where you live? I mean no offense, but seeing as you’ve been quite vocal about your opinions, it seems others would appreciate your honesty about where you’re from. It might give us an idea how you have come up with your opinions. Again, no offense intended; I have just observed this “neutral zone” location in profiles lately and it appears to be obvious that it is based mainly on political points of view because of our recent election and that some people are afraid to say where they’re from and would rather remain completely anonymous. I’m proud to say I’m an AMERICAN born and breed. Are you proud of your country? Where do you live? How long have you lived there? If you’re not proud, remain in the “neutral zone”. Personally, I think it’s cowardice to not state the country you live in but that is just my opinion. I make no apologies for requesting that you stand up for your country.
Respectfully,
Robert

Here's the breakdown of the 32 trolls I'm currently tracking
17 - still with us
6 - banned within 3 weeks of their anniversary
3 - got tired and left
2 - banned within 2 months of joining
2 - banned more than 2 months before or after their anniversary date
1 - deceased
...feel sorry for you, or jealous....You actually have the time to track them ? ...your in my prayers...be careful...this kind of obsession could lead you to become that which you despise...
