Wow!! My 2100 hopelessly outdated :-((

...I think that's the one Oly is working on now...to be named the
"Olyak 3100 24/7 HyperZoom"...
You forgot the obligatory "Camedia".

Where do these Japanese companies get these names? Camedia? CoolPix? Dimage? Good grief! Dimage??? How are you supposed to pronounce that, anyway? Like it were French? Like "image" with a D in front of it?

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I feel much better now.

There will ALWAYS be something better coming out. If you think you're going to find a digicam that's going to be state-of-the-art for more than a few months, you'll drive yourself crazy.

There's only one thing that really matters in the end: creating great photographs.

The new Minolta Dimage 7 was sooo much better than expected.
It adresses ALL my complaints on the 2100. The only drawback (for
me that is) is the 200 mm full zoom and no IS. Mechanical control
of zoom and focus, not the fly-by-wire!

If this is for real I will start save for a new x-mas gift to
myself righ now!

I guess the engineers at Oly an Nikon having a lot of overtime to
come! ;-)

"Dee-mahge," apparently. Right: as if it were French.

Random neural firing: The concern about the battery location (heat source near the sensor) seems like a reasonable concern. I hope one of the folks who host these digital-imaging forums will raise this issue with Minolta and get a straightforward answer.

Someone in another forum has just announced that with the introduction of the Dimage 7, the Olympus E-10 is reduced to little more than a "glorified Instamatic." And guaranteed, not so many months from now when some other whiz-bang system appears (say, Olympus' digital interchangeable-lens SLR), folks of like mind will be announcing that the Dimage 7 is little more than a "glorified Instamatic." Ah, common sense.

You said it Gary. I have a 3.3mp that I use for portrait work and the Oly 2500 and 2100 for field and fun. Then too I have a Canon F1 with every lens and gadget ....in the closet.....no longer used....so I really can't get excited about a 5 mp. I print 11x14 now with beautiful results and I really don't need 1.67mp more. I see in the Canon forum that Pekka has gone to the D30. If I could do what he has done with the 3.3mp G1 I would be very happy. At least I know it is possible. Right now it seems less is more. I have the tools needed to produce those "great" photos and once in awhile I do. ..Lectraglide

I was thinking about the c-2100 and shopping around for best price when I saw this - WoW!

This will force down all the ultrazooms pricess down. I will now wait for c2100 and other ultrazooms prices to drop before I get them. 2 megapixel is sufficient for me, since I seldom ever print beyond 8 x 10 sizes.

The C2100's burst mode is nothing to sneeze at either. With all
those pixels to slog around, the D7 is understandably slower (and
cannot buffer as many pictures).

They each have their strengths.

I don't think the D7 will have a direct effect on the 2100 price - they are in very different leagues, with the 2100 currently close to $600 (lowest prices), and D7 (when it ships, which may still be a while) about $1500. Besides, in terms of the zoom power the D7 is a different animal too - it has a wider WA - its telephoto reach is nearly half that of the 2100.
