hi there. i just purchased a CP880 (silver color) from an internet site based in New Jersey. am a bit worried about the genuineness of this camera. there are a couple of things that got me worried:
1) the box is not sealed

2) it didn't come with the cable that goes from the camera to a USB or serial port. instead they sent a SanDisk CF drive (Imagemate).

3) the warranty papers (at least what i assumed it is) are all in Japanese. now how do i fill this up?!? and where do i send it to?!?!

4) the CD that goes with it doesn't have anything labeled out front. looks like a burned CD. haven't tried installing the s/w though.

5) the instructions, though in English and is neatly compiled, are definitely copies made from a copier.

i know this camera (which is cheaper than most CP880s) are targetted for the international market. (i actually asked for a black one and they said the camera is indeed black but they sent a silver one!) and i'm wondering if this is the 'real deal' and if there's a chance that is not an official Nikon product. must i be worried? how can i actually tell that this camera is real?

should i return it?

thanks for any help you can offer.

It sounds like they sent you a returned grey market camera. I would return it if that's not what you ordered.

When I ordered my Olympus 2100 from ritzcamera.com, they initially sent me a returned one (from the way it arrived, it appeared to be a genuine mistake in their shipping dept.). Anyway, when I contacted them, they were very apologetic and fedex-ed a new one out right away. Hoepfully you'll get the same service from your vendor.

you get what you pay for. I bet you bought it at focus.com. If so, they take over the warranty. mel

Nikon doesn't seal their boxes. The camera itself is genuine grey market. If the camera takes pics, most likely, it is real. But, as someone pointed out, could be a returneed camera.

Since it's grey market, unless the company who sold it to you honors the warranty, or you bought an extended that does, you will be sol when it comes time to repair it - you will have to pay for repairs.

I'm not sure if grey market cameras come with english written manuals - probably not, so they probably send a photocopied one (or the original one wasn't sent back with it when returned.

As far as the Imagemate, either the camera was returned with it, or the company sent you the reader since it wasn't returned with the cable. But that's just a guess.

Jeez, return that puppy, and get a proper us model from an authorized dealer. There's plenty of 880's around, no need to buy a suspect one. If you like saving money, you can buy a reconditioned 990 directly from Nikon at

Don't mail order everything. Step out of your chair, walk outside to a nearby photo shop and get your camera there. You get to see your camera before you buy it, you see what's in the box, you can compare with other cameras. I'm sure it'll be cheaper too!
