>>> Challenge 81 information <<<

Just got back from my trip to the UK, to visit my mother who is 87 and not in the best of health. Unfortunately this trip was planned some time ago, when I wasnt expecting to host the challenge.

For those who wondered what had happened to me

If you look in the challenge thread you will see that I did explain the fact that I would probably not be able to leave any comments before I got back this evening. I did ask Mike and Nancy to stand in for me while I was away and I think that they did a wonderful job.

THANKS MIKE AND NANCY YOU WERE TERRIFIC

I'm sorry but it wasn't possible to get internet access from my mother's and it turned out that they had closed the internet café in the town, so I'm afraid I wasnt able to comment on the entries so far, but now that I'm back home I will try to do as much as I can to make up for lost time..

Best Regards.....Penelope

Welcome back, and I hope that things are stable with your mother.

Please don't feel that you've been under any obligation at all to comment on the entries, especially since we all knew you were away from base. In Any case, the comments above appear to have been directed towards the forum at large, and I hope not towards you specifically as host.

Besides which, hosts have their own lives to attend to as well, and although most hosts do try and get to most of the entries in time, it simply isn't always possible.

Aside from which, as I mentioned I think that this particular Challenge theme doesn't lend itself too readily to much analysis of images unless requested by the entrant. They're all too nice to the eye to start singling out for comment and it can easily become an "all or nothing" thing. And very few of us have time for the "all", whether we feel comfortable about it or not.

Regards,

Mike

You are right Mark, you are one of the biggest contributors of comments in the challenges. You might be interested to know that it is because of your comments that I stopped participating. Read what you will into that but, I'd bet your reading would be incorrect.

I still look at each challenge but cannot seem to get motivated on anything that fits my sense of humor and a host of other personal 'requirements' for an entry in the challenge. It may be that I will participate in the current challenge. Unlikely since our landscapes are pretty blah and have only green, brown, and blue. I could add some red and black if I blew something up though. That's an idea.

Mike F has been very tenacious in his attempts to get me to return to the challenges. I think he may have given up on me though since I stopped receiving his encouraging emails. Still, I'll pop one or two in there sometime when the spark ignites some creativity. I like my images to be 'a little off' and that's hard to do with landscapes.

So, that's my story regarding my lack of entries. As for lack of voting, I have no excuse or reason. I just don't take the time. I look at the images and only one time did something strike me hard enough to vote on. I feel that many of the images too liberally interpret the challenge subject.

No reply necessary.

who can argue or even attempt rebuttle to the comments you've made
in response to mine.

You have a way of making everything look sensible....
from YOUR point of view.

Sorry I got a little testy regarding your mention of my only having
"sprinkled" a few comments in the galleries but, history shows I'm
one of heaviest contributors to the challenges as far as feedback /
comments goes. I do it because I enjoy it and enjoy helping
others.... even if they don't necessarily see it as "help".

Night,
Markjay

I can't see what you are talking about, but it's likely fixed by now. I wonder if that little "publicly viewable" box was unchecked by mistake?

What's the story with the image marked that you have to be logged
in as stfchallenge in order to view it? It's the image in the
Exhibiton gallery between Bambi and Mt. Rushmore.

Not sure what's going on. I can view it without being logged in to any account. Maybe its public viewability status has been changed in the last few hours. Is it still playing hard to get for you? And does the problem persist in a new browser instance?

Aside from which, it would be nice if whoever posted it said came out from behind the scenery and said who he/she was... we'd love to meet you! ;-)

There's also this little request in the Challenge 81 guidelines:

"* Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, and it helps to preserve the quality of your image upload for best viewing."

It's easily fixed using the image replacement option in the Edit window, and dial-up subscribers will appreciate it.

Well, now I can see it. But now I also see that "by ?????" has been added to the title.

It was the strangest thing -- I had no idea the image even existed because it didn't even appear in the gallery when I was logged in under my own name. But when I was going thru the entries to comment on them, when I hit "Next" on the Bambi image, I got a blank screen except for the words, "You can only view this image when logged in as stfchallenge." So that's what I did, and voila, it appeared in the gallery and as an individual entry (after a bit of maneuvering to be able to see it).

Anyway, thought you'd like to know.

Funny thing that, it started life as "by ????????". Pretty horrifiic depreciation in these times! :-P It was put there as a sort of hint/request for the artist to come out of hiding...

The inaccessibility may have just been some minor PBase anomaly that could well have cleared itself since. It would be useful to know it you can now see it when logged out, or into your own account.

...When I first saw your 'question' Helen, I went in and was able to see the image in question. So I checked and discovered the 'publicly viewable' box was unchecked, so I checked it. Sorry for any confusion. I still don't know whose it is though... Someone else must have added the 'by ???'.

I hope I didn't add to the mystery too much :).
