Black Diamond Battery - Lousy Quality

The contacts on the battery are spring loded and move a lot.

The battery has to be out of the camera quite a bit for you to lose power like that. I had 2 batteries like that (I sold 1Ds and both batteries) and both of them were working just fine.
I just received my BD Battery for the 1DM2. After charging it the
first time, I gently pulled the charge cable from it's socket and
guess what? The female receiver that is built into the new battery
pulled out along with the mail cable (the cable attached to the
charger). The female receiver is stuck copulated to the male pin.
The consolation is that the male coupler will plug into the new
battery, meaning, the female receiver plugs into the hole it pulled
out of.

The little switch thingy that you turn when installing/removing the
battery from the camera flops up and down when in the camera body.

Aside from this, the battery did provide me 1,400 and still shows
full.

I will be returning it to the vendor for an exchange. It seems
I've read more then a few complaints about this 3rd party battery
here and on other sites.

When is this company going to finally get it right?!?

max...i was using one of these batteries last week in my 1ds. the
camera stopped working with blank data screens when position
changes were made made. since new the battery has become slightly
loose. on examination of the latch it is made of plastic unlike
the metal of the canon battery. wear on the plastic had made
electrical contact position sensitive.
i expect everyone will have this problem with repeated use of this
item.

Canon is the best when it is working.

MDD recommends epoxy to make well smaller.

I would say most people simply resent being charged 4x what the
thing is really worth. Would be the same for brakes on their car
if the dealer wanted 4x what the autoparts store sells them for
(well, they probably do). Or getting an "asprin" from the hospital
pharmacy for $2 when a whole bottle costs that much.
That's amazingly lame reasoning. Apparently these batteries are 1/4 the price and 1/4 the quality, so the cheapskates that buy them ARE getting what they pay for. They don't pay much and don't get much. In fact, they get exactly what they deserve. A very good example of penny wise and pound foolish.

To over-expose is human...
I bought some off-the-wall brand a month or two back out of absolute necessity (B&H backordered on real-deal)...saved about $30 off the Canon version...bad mistake...big ripoff...they're cheaper because they're rinky-dink, makeshift, replicas...they even weigh less...go ahead and spend the $119 for Canon's real-deal...I've got 3 for my 1D along with the rinky-dink...there's a BIG difference and the real-deals are worth every penny they cost and then some!

I'll never understand why someone will pay $4000 plus for a
top-of-the-line camera and then cheap out on the battery. A Canon
battery is only $120-- About the same as a 1GB memory card.

DD2.1:

I agree 100%...read one thread on this forum a few weeks back about a guy that bought a couple of generics, then turned around and bought some sort of replacement parts to bring them up to snuff with the Canon real-deal...my time's a lot more valuable than that!

You're using the wrong metric.

The question instead should be: Will the $39 battery do a good job?

The $4,000 figure is irrelevent and there is NO correlation between that number and a $39 battery.

I'll never understand this defeatus attitude...to succumb to this need to only buy OEM.

Only a fool would not investigate other cheaper solutions to see if they exist.

You must be a fool if you don't see the value in one attempting to try to find non-OEM products that are cheaper and better.

OEM makers love people like you...that have this dillusion that if you want to find a non-OEM part to save money is wrong.

$120 for an OEM battery is way too much! And it is NEVER worth it. The only reason I would buy the Canon OEM is if I cannot find a decent after-market knock-off.

You come across like an elitist snob, and I would suggest you sale your 1DM2 and get yourself a Kodak Instamatic circa 1967 instead.

Your attitude makes me sick, and furthermore, you remind me of my bent and mentally ill wife!

Just received my BD battery from MDD stores.

Battery fits perfectly my 1D, no loose parts whatsoever and the latch stay in the closed position (up). The camera seems operatying perfectly.

The battery I have received does not look flimsy or cheap... It works for me with my 1D and is heaps cheaper than the Canon one..
By the way who makes the Canon battery?

Maybe you can explain to me how Canon can charge $120 for 10 AA NiMh batteries in a plastic case. The BD @ $39.99 is making a profit and using higher capacity batteries. Seems some people have more money than sense and are willing to help finance the Canon end-of-year Xmas party.

And in Australia the battery costs $280 LOL

Maybe the energizer battery is the way to go.

I got a Balck Diamond from mdd. works fine; its a little tight to turn the locking latch requiring a push. Otherwise the rubber seal looks ok.
