Kids playing hide and seek. Which version is better?

Thanks nubui. Did you see the black and whites?

thanks for pointing it out. Of course being tired and drinking a beer doesn't help the situation. :-)

I must be tired....I don't see them. Where???

JaredSR
I hear ya, it's been a long day. They are just a little ways down
from the top of this thread.

I like the tighter crop around the waists of the first one, but like others have said - i don't like the fence and garage? in the background.

Just realized i didn't scroll far enough down in them - waists are the same...but anyhow - try cropping the the bottom a tad more in the 2nd one...gives the feeling of them hiding behind the tree, but also the bottom of the frame.

I agree, that's why I thought the tighter crop was the best of the two.

Mike, You know my philosophy on cropping -- the tighter the better. So I like the second version. In fact, if you didn't mind dropping a few body parts, you could crop out all of the background. The kid on the right would take the biggest hit, but it might be a better shot.

Thanks for the tip, Tom. I will give it a try and see how it looks!

Personally, I think this gives more of the "peek-a-boo" flavor to the shot. Let me know what you think.

Hi Tom. Now I don't normally don't like heads being cut off in shots, it's just a personal thing of mine, but in some cases it works. That is the case here. I think that's a great crop, and works really well. Thanks for taking time to do it!

I thought of it, but decided that would be wrong. ;^)

If you play with it longer than I did, you might be able to get some of his head back, particularly if you use the healing tool to rub out the remaining portion of the garage on the upper left corner of the shot. But you will still have a problem that the kid on the right has a fence post growing out of the top of his head, so I think you have to resign yourself to losing a portion of the top of his head.

Also, as I look at my crop, I'd be inclined to take a little more off the bottom of the shot, too, crop just below the pinky finger of the kid on the left. That way, you can eliminate most of that green blob of grass in the lower right corner.

it puts the eyes of the boys in a better compositional place. Also it makes the picture a little more "panoramic" and actually gives you the sense of the tree being bigger than #1 does when you show more of it.

My side of the family is famous for our big ears, so you don't want to go messing with the ears! LOL Thanks again Tom, for the other ideas you just poste.d

Hi Mike! It appears I'm in the minority but I really prefer the first shot. I like being able to follow the tree down to the boys' faces.

Just my two cents! Great shot!
Took my gtandkids to the park, and they wanted to play hide and
seek. I took this shot of them behind a tree, and the family really
likes it. I made two cropped versions, and I thought the second one
was better because it is cropped tighter, with less of the
background visible. My family though is split down the middle on
which one they like best, and some think that having more tree
visible is better, and they don't care about the background. I see
their point, but thought I would ask you folks what you thought.
