Which printer do you use?

I use an Epson Stylus Photo R300 and thoroughly enjoy it. For me the higher end R800 is not as cost efficient as I would like.
I have recently purchased a Canon IP8500 8 cartidge printer and
drool over the quality of the pics every time I print. So I was
wondering what printers other users are using and what their
thoughts are on the print quality of the FZ20 pics?

Maybe my friends are more into that sort of thing , but even if no one wanted to look at them, I do.
I still look at photos made from slides My parents made 40 years ago.

And yes I can get 1000 photos for $170.00 off the net ,I was just saying if I find a couple photos I want to fix and print I can have the finished product in my hand in a couple minutes.

To each their own.

And I have no problem printing out 13 x 19s prints taken by my FZ10 and now that I have the FZ20 with one more megapixel those large pics should be even better (theoretically speaking only so far). There are some folks who disparage the quality and fading resistance of Canon inks but a lot of it depends on "atmospheric conditions" in your area --- humidity, heat, etc --- and how it's mounted or if it's in direct sunlight. Also important is the photo paper; I use Epson Matte Heavyweight, Colorlife and Ilford Classic Pearl and the results have been uniformly stunning. I expect no less from prints taken by my new FZ20.

Best Wishes,

Steve

I'm hoping to have one of the new HP printers (8450 or the less expensive version of the same thing) in a few days. The quality looked excellent in the store, but based on the comments here, HP isn't very popular. Is there something I should know? (I do realize the inks carts are fairly expensive)

See my comments above. I get excellent quality prints but I think any home printer is going to be more expensive due to the price of ink and paper than uploading them to a service.

and assume the new line of Canons are at least the equivalent. I refill the cartridges using MSI bulk ink so the cost for ink is low. I print full-size "proofs" on IBM 24 lb matte photo paper, make whatever adjustments are necessary, then go to whatever "real" photo paper I have that fits the image for the final print. I've had no problems using the 2nd party inks, but I do a lot of printing -- the equivalent of over 800 8x10's in the last 3 months.
Oh yeah -- and the Canons are really fast -- and unnervingly quiet!

As far as the FZ10/20 for prints -- I can't really say, but if their images print anything like what I'm getting from my FZ1v2 and FZ15 (should be as good or better), then you shouldn't have any problem -- at least up to 8.5x11.

Dye sub IMHO is the only way to go. I use the Olympus P-400 and the new Kodak Printer Dock. Supurb perfect pictures everytime that are identical to the ones you have the photo lab produce. Probably more costly than an inkjet but I just never was able to repeatedly get good prints from an inkjet. Also with the inkjets they fade worse and it's possible to run low on only a single ink, costing more for cartridges and ruining a picture now and then. The dye subs use a ribbon for each print so you are assured perfect color every time plus an absolutely known cost because the ribbon is used only once per picture and the ribbon is rated for pictures.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedbak and great tips.

Ric
I did a comparison of the resolution of different printers here
(about 3/4 way down) http://faq.arstechnica.com/link.php?i=1754

Although now a bit dated, the main points still hold. I still use
the Canon S900 myself and the newer models are better. I print 8”
x 10” 99% of the time and keep the cost down by using bulk ink from
http://www.inkjetgoodies.com (buy the 6 color kit & replacement
cartridges) and paper from http://www.redriverpaper.com #1656 68lb.
UltraPro Gloss 8.5x11 100 Sheets $29.99 or cheaper when seconds are
on sale. This results in an 8 x10 print for ~$0.60

I use a Canon i850 and if the new ones are any better they would be
unbelieveable.
One tip for the 4 X 6 Prints, I use the easyprint software and put
4 on a 8.5 X 11 sheet and use a cutter to separate , that really
cuts the cost.

And I know it is only 4 X 5 1/2 but thats Ok with me.
I printed 1000 photos from my vacation for $90
$50 for the paper and $40 for 6 ink tanks.
http://asp01.photoprintit.de/microsite/2976/calculator.php

(local market I used here, this is their online webpage)
1000 Bilder 150,00 €
Transferpauschale + ggf. Porto & Verpackung * 1,95 €
Gesamtpreis 151,95 €
(I only pay 0.65 Euro for "shipping&handling" since I fetch them
from their store - not that it matters :)

150 Euros should be about 120 dollar, but keep in mind that most
things here are overpriced (one would think that a camera/laptop
etc which seels for 1000 dollars in the USA would be less than 900
euros here. In reality it is usually 1100 Euro or more...)

I have not checked whether this is the cheapest online printer.
Prices seem to fall every month, though. I know I paid over 5 Euros
for 20cmx30cm print, nowadays you get them under 2 Euro.
Ihre Auswahl kostet auf einem Tintenstrahldrucker 845,70 € .
The say it would cost me 845 Euro on a inkjet - no idea how they
calculate this.

I usually print 13cmx18cm (I find my images deserve no less than
that :) and occasionally 20cmx30cm (A4).

However, I have selected slightly over 110 images from my last
vacation, and even this is torture for anyone to view. I dunno why
I would want to print 1000 photos and then where to store them, or
even show them to someone. The latter would probably end me dead
and stuffed with my "precioussss prints" due to "cruelty to viewer"
:)

Best wishes,

Tels

I think its important to know both the printer AND the paper used. I have a Canon I960 and used Canon paper. Turns out that they fade within 30 days of hanging on my cubicle wall at my office.

Not the on-line photo service. I didn't explain myself correctyl.
I meant to say the price for accessing the internet so that you can
upload the pictures.
Well, if you divide that by the number of sites I visit plus the income I make from some of the sites, maybe I come out ahead?
