In early December my wife and I will be going to New York City for 4 days. Having never been to NY City, what are the top 10 tourist items to see and do during that time of year. We are staying at the Hilton in down town NY.

How is the weather in early December? Cold?

I would also add the following
  • Museum of Morden Art (MoMA) which will reopens in Manhattan in 2weeks)
  • Chrysler Building
  • Union Square and the Market
  • Lincoln Center
  • United Nations
  • Broadway Shows
  • Columbia University & St Johns Cathedral
Anyway, you might have to do a choice since in 4 days you won't be able to do all that unless you might want to walk a bit !!!!

in December, it will be cold but it could be cold or really really cold
anyway the best way would be to check the forecast the day before you leave

Don't forget to take in a Broadway show. It's a great experience.

Don't forget your local Krispy Kreme donut place!!

Sorry guys.. had to say it. I'm living in Holland and miss the small things terribly... and I'm hungry... and I'm at work... Time to pull out my 20d and harass my colleagues some!

We went for the first time in early December last year while on a college hunting trip. Yes it was cold, and windy. In fact, we stayed in midtown just a block from the Empire State Building and never saw a tall building due to the storm. lol. Here's a shot taken near the met. Which is a good place to go if the weather is really bad because you can stay inside all day and still not see it all. We also went to the Gugenheim, and then let our umbrellas pull us on the ice along Central Park down to the Met ;). At least you are getting the Hilton, we stayed in some dive that kept the heat up so high we had to open the windows, but when we did the pigeons came in to get warm. lol Well, good luck to you, we will be in Boston at the end of November so we are praying for good weather too!

Used to cold weather where we live, but it would be nice to go out and actually see stuff! Cindy

Hey MC,

I just returned from NYC and actually stayed at the Hilton as well. Hotels are hotels as far as I'm concerned, but I guess it's nice.

Where to go? Boy... there's so much to see. Plan an afternoon in Central Park for sure. Central Park is one of my favorite places, it's truly an incredible place.

Walk as much as possible. You'll see stuff you'd never come up on when taking a taxi or the subway.

I'm not a touristy guy, so I prefer to just take in the places I visit. I tend to stay away from the touristy places.

If you like Japanese food or sushi, go to "Go" restaraunt... lower manhattan somewhere, can't remember the street.

I also didn't shoot very traditionally when I was there. I used a Lensbaby almost exclusively. I was in a weird mood.

Anyway, you can view Manhattan as I saw it here...

Have fun!

How is the weather in early December? Cold?
Last winter was a mild winter but expect the weather to be in the 32 degrees. But my gut feeling is that since we had a mild summer it is going to be pay back time and I think we are going to have a harsh winter.

If you have fours day, probably three and a half. This is what I recommend:

1 - Times Square a night

2 - Top of Empire State building

3 - Walk to Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty, then to Wall Street then to see were the WTC was. You really do not have the time to take the ferry to Liberty Island.

4 - Walk half way over the Brooklyn Bridge.

5 - Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is one the top five museums in the world. Also you can take photos inside so have your camera. Word of caution you can spend all day there.

6 - Visit Grand Central Station

7 - Walk along 5th Avenue. Start from 34th start and walk all the way to Central Park. It is one of the best walks in the world! You will pass some world famous landmarks to give yourself plenty of time.

8 - Central Park is nice in the winter, better if it snows.

9 - Have lunch or dinner in China Town.

10 - Do not have pizza in Manhattan. To many places in Manhattan cater to the lunch crowds or tourist and they are only concern about selling pizza and not making a good one. The best places are in Queens and Brooklyn.

Have I good time in the Big Apple. I always do that why I live here! :)

Was just there last month. If you do a search here and in the 300D forum, you'll find some good places to go. One of my favorites was Pier 17 on the NJ side of the East River, right by the Manhattan bridge. Took some nice sunset pictures of the city and the reflection on the water.

December is usually cold, but not as bad as January and February. Expect about 30F-40F temperatures, maybe a bit colder at times.

The view from the top of the Empire State Building isn't as nice as I thought it would be. Just concrete as far as the eye can see, except for the river. But B&H is really close to there!

If you get rained out, consider going over to the former Stanley Theater in Jersey City, NJ. Simply an awesome building. Tours are from 8-4 weekdays, I believe. It's now an assembly hall for Jehovah's Witnesses, but the tours are available to the general public.

Those are a few of the places we got to visit. Please share your trip experiences with us when you get back!

Just got back from the NYC Marathon. Theres so much to see in new york its almost overwhelming :) People have allready covered the big spots I guess so I'm not gonna make any more recomendations.

Most hotels will have NYC visitor guides with maps of the city and all the major tourist spots, plus bus and train routes.

I didnt try many pizza places there, but I will say that Ray's Pizza across the street from the Sherraton NY was pretty tasty :) so yes you can get good pizza in Manhattan.

I was there for work so I didnt have a ton of time to do the tourist thing, but I did snap a few pics to document my trip. You can check them out if you like @ http://szilboorg.photosite.com/nyc04/

Sorry for the small size.
