20d review makes me wanna scream! (pic)

What's your problem? Did you think that the D70 would be the last digital SLR anyone would bring out and that there would be no further developments? Does a D70 take worse pictures because there's another camera out there that's newer and may arguably have some better features (and also costs a lot more)?

I don't get it. People don't moan and whine if an auto manufacturer brings out a new model with nice new features. Why do camera owners get caught up in this?

If you had read the thread, you'd have your answer.

I don't care about the minute details of the equipment, Bob, but then, I think the photos as art, are the most important part of photography. Others derive pleasure from the technical side of things. Nothing wrong with that either. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I'm very sad and shocked of the 20D review.
I'm going to sucide my self now.
But how?...help me please...

Hanging, jumping, sinking, poisoning ??????? ...;-)
Dunno... You'll have to read the reviews, examine each method in
minute detail, agonize over it for a while, post in the hanging,
jumping, sinking and poison forums to get a feel for it and then go
to the local suicide store to see how each one feels to you. :-)
If you read the forth paragrapf of Phil's "Overall Conclusion"
there is the truth.
umm, well, I haven't read the review, so am lacking "the truth" of
Phil's words. The truth, for me, is that my next camera will not
be a replacement for the d70, but a companion. I have much yet to
learn about the art. The d70 is more than capable of producing the
images that I want, when I do my part.

Go buy a D20 then post a pic on this forum. Technically it won't be suicide, but you won't live long.

but it's been a while since Canon users had reason to be upset due
to better Nikon reviews. I am a D70 owner, and I'm not planning to
switch, but the 20D exceeds my expectations.
If by "a while" you mean March 2004, I agree. Canon was first to the budget DSLR game with the 300D, and Nikon one-upped them with the D70 (which I thought was comparable to the 10D, albeit at a better price point). Canon fired back with the 20D, which is by all accounts an excellent camera. But as Phil said in his review, there isn't much motivation to switch from a 10D to a 20D. If the 20D exceeded your expectations, I don't think you're very optimistic about cameras improving. The 20D isn't a revalation, it's just gradual progression towards better gear.

I think the folks who switch bodies once a year are either (a) professionals who are paid well for their work and demand the best, or (b) people who enjoy the technology as much as the art. Most of the good photographers I know aren't shooting with the newest equipment - they upgrade every few product cycles and concentrate on making the most of what they've got.

How could anyone mind that digital cameras are getting better all the time? I am not envious of D20 owners, I'm happy for them.
I have a D70 which I am very happy with.

I also have a Toyota, which I think is a great car. Even if there are people out there who owns a Ferrari...

Well, Kerry, not too much of a sense of humor in this forum, either :-)

I appreciated it and I know someone else who did because he responded here and has had the same reaction to a little humor on a slow day....

I'm not. I was poking fun, satire, sarcasm, being the method. :-)
Are you seriously saying that you think that the New Canon will
give you better pictures than those that you are achieving now or
have achieved since you took ownership of the D70?
Absolutely not, nor do I believe that the camera would make any
difference to the vast majority of folks that agonize over the 2
cameras, or any other cameras at this level. The differences, at
this price point, are simply not significant.
Plus DO YOU
REALLY WANT TO JOIN THE CANON FORUM!!
Now, there's a good point...... ugh.... :-)

Sorry, Bob, that my subtle humor/sarcasm didn't come across to you
and the others.

I haven't read the 20d review. I have no interest in the camera.
I'm sure that it's a good camera. I'm equally sure that the d70 is
a good camera. IMO, the only significant differences relative to
the output of the 2 cameras would come from the abilities of the
photographer.

My apologies my fellow D70 user. I thiught it might be a satirical comment, but was not sure. So many people go banging on about the latest GIZMO and how they wished that they had waited until it was launched that I thought that I would get my feelings of my chest.

I am really pleased that you also like the D70 and apologise again if my comments upset you.

P.S., Great picture Kerry!

Nowhereatoll had it right- that's how I feel after finding a bad setting after filling a gig.

OK, not everybody, but those of you who are hung up on technology over just taking pictures. Look at this picture and tell me what camera took it, and the level of expertise of the photographer.

Here's a shot of another d70 user after reading the 20d review.
I simply do not understand why you are so upset. You own a
fabulous Nikon D70, and your self-portrait is taken withe the
excellent 80-400mm ED VR, yet you are throwing a hissey fit.
Are you seriously saying that you think that the New Canon will

Be thankful that you have what you have, and give some thought to
all those photographers out there who would love a D70, yet cannot
afford one, let alone the lenses you use. This "The other man's
grass is always greener" syndrome is total b* ks.
The D70 is my first Dslr after 40 years of using Nikon and Leicas
and I do not as yet think I have reached 50% of its potential. When
I feel that I have learnt almost all there is to learn and reached
the limit of its potential then I will consider upgrading. Until
then I will continue to use my D70 and bask in the fact that I am
lucky enough to own on of the best Dslr's for its price that has so
far been produced.

no, the 20D also has a much better dynamic range, both than the 10D and the D70, you can see this from the pictures and Phil's analysis. that makes 3 key qualities - nr. of pixels, which matter to an extent, low noise - matters particularly when you want to use curves to bring out detail from shadow ares (boosts dynamic range) and dynamic range as such.

Will wait for Nikon's reaction. --

No apologies necessary, Bob. I don't do slapstick humor, so that usually leaves a lot of folks wondering. It certainly didn't upset me. I think your remarks are quite appropriate to the general theme.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the technology, for the sake of the technology. But it gets rather tiresome when insignificant points are raised as if they should be the obvious deciding factor that will determine the fate of the human race.

I enjoy the technology as well as most and certainly look forward to Nikon's next offering. It is certain that I'll buy it, or another d70. I expect the d200 to offer some small improvements over the d70 that will make it easier for me to capture certain shots. But, that's not why I'll buy it. I'll buy it because I want 2 bodies, not because I believe it will make my photos any better. I'm happy with the photos I'm getting now, but I have much yet to learn. I know that any real improvement will come by increasing my skills, not by the purchase of another camera.
