Panazonic FZ20?

Fast focusing, creative control over depth of field, TTL optical viewfinder and of course low noise at most ISOs, interchangable lenses and accessories. In the end, they are both cameras, and you can only have so many differences.
Just wondering, aside from ISO and lenses, what the Drebel has over
the FZ20.

I did check out the review and looked at the sample images and I'm impressed. The lens is more than what I would want, so the only thing is noise and high ISO and AF speed.

If you aim and shoot, the FZ20 takes about 1 second before it actually takes the picture. Often that is fast enough for me, but for things like sports photography it is wa too slow.

The thing that keeps me hooked to the DRebel is the low noise, up to ISO 400. (I find ISO 800 and 1600 to be too noisy unless you downsize the image.) Even the 20D is not much better than the DRebel. Noise in dark areas is still a problem. The FZ20 actually does quite well regarding noise in dark areas at lowest ISO.

The other thing is control over DOF. With the FZ20 you always have a much larger DOF than with the DRebel. I find that a good thing, but some people want to use a small DOF to emphasize a subject and blur the rest.

Actually, I'm in the 30 day trial period with the DRebel, and really like it, I just want to make sure I'm getting the right kind of camera for my/family needs.

Regarding ISO, I've found ISO images of 800, at least to me, very noise free. Like the shot-to-shot time and brilliant, out-of-the-camera images as well.

Just wanted to see what everyone's opinion on the FZ20 was.

I think that perception of noise is partly down to what you are used to.

From the samples I've seen, ISO 800 on a DSLR generally looks cleaner than ISO 200 on most compacts and prosumers.

A while back I was looking for a new, pocket-sized P&S and I checked out the Minolta Dimage X50. Now that's noisy!!! I took some sample shots and even in reasonable day light there was major noise in dark areas of the picture.

Cheers.

Get yourself some good noise reduction software and even ISO 800 images will be super clean and 1600 will be clean.

Stick with the rebel. There are so many things about it better than the panasonic. It's a whole different ball game. You got the rebates I take it?

I found by shooting RAW, the ISO800 pictures are very clean and the ISO1600 can be clean enough w/o needing NeatImage. The ISO1600 photos from the 20D is very similar to the ISO800 shots from the 300D. Since I only shoot RAW for high ISO pictures, I can't tell if the JPEGs are as clean (probably not).

I just recently took a bunch ISO800 to ISO1600 shot for indoor performances with the 300D and 20D. All were shot in RAW and processed in C1 Pro without using NeatImage.

You can look at the 100% crops to see if the full size shots are clean enough.

wow - those are amazing!

I'll most likely stick with the DR, but, even with the rebate (which I haven't yet taken, but have until Jan 2005....might want to get a lens or flash), $780 is still good money, and want to be sure.

Nevermind about nevermind, I clicked on Peter's profile, not yours.
