Hi all,

I been hanging out here a bit today and I see a lot of squabbling as seems to be the norm lately. Some folks only want pics from Sony cameras, some don't want threads bumped (I'm guilty, I'm a serial bumper), some don't want OT threads, some want OT threads but no politics, some want some folks warned or banned.

Everybody has their own vision of how they want STF to be and they seem to want to impose it on everyone else. It can make for a rather tense forum.

Why don't we just lets things be? If there's a thread you don't like, ignore it. If someone is posting pics from the "wrong" camera, ignore it. Responding to the stuff you feel doesn't belong here is self-defeating because it only focuses more attention on it. Hmm, maybe I'm doing the samething here.

Most of the posts on this board every day are in violation of Phil's wishes already (pics are supposed to be in Samples and Galleries etc.). Basically we are operating in a free wheeling forum w/o any rules. Just let it be. Have some fun. Participate in the threads you like and ignore the ones you don't like.

...well put. Thanks for typing what a lot of us were thinking. Life's too short to get bent all out of shape about someone else's STF post. Sheesh!

You know that's a pretty good idea if people will actually adhere to it. I do mean everyone. Posting things that you know will cause controversy should be included in this. Now anything can cause controversy. I mean just use a little common sense. I'm as hotheaded as anyone here but I know better than too just put out my offtopic political beliefs in any thread. If you are going to post some of the things you do out of thin air then don't be suprised if people actually respond. No offense but this is a public forum. Pictures from other cameras I appreciate. Political views (even ones I agree with) I don't. Trolling by certain members I don't. Not you Harry. I mean Halpren specifically. We all run the edge of the forum rules. This entire thread is a prime example. Some just have to go that extra mile though. Those of us that need to throttle it back know who we are. No one here is stupid.

In Holland we have developed this approach a bit further:

on May 6th 2002 the politician Pim Fortuyn was killed because of his ideas (Okay, he was a right wing politician and even though I didn't share his politicial views I think he has the freedom to express himself) and this week on November 2nd 2004 (oddly enough 911 days after Fortuyn was killed) the film maker, tv host and writer Theo van Gogh (47) was shot and stabbed to death while he cycled throught Amsterdam on his way home after bringing his 12-year old son to school. The killer left a letter on his body. Investigation shows that the killer is a member of an extreme Muslim terrorist group.

Theo van Gogh was rather controversial, because he often used his films and articles to express his opinion and to start a discussion on sensitive subjects. His latest film was about the surpression of women in extreme Islamic cultures. On December 12th his film about Pim Fortuyn will be shown in cinemas and on the internet.

This is a good thing, but I abhor the reaction of people stating that the actions against Pim and Theo are hurting our rights to express ourselves. They were both killed by maniacs, not clear thinking individuals as far as I'm concerned. Do you remember the first reaction on forums when pim died? The 'extreem rechts' people were instantly blaming foreigners, while the one who did it was as Dutch as can be. We still have the right in our country to say anything we want, no-one has taken that away from us. This awful incident has shown us that there are crazy people in this world, not that our entire society has gone crazy (as some people assume). I just wanted to say that. And my condolences of course to Theos friends and relatives.

You are of course correct. I sort of come and go now days, mainly because of a few things you have stated to be honest. I also use an FZ10 now as well as the Sony.

At one time we had huge arguments over posting images in the forums and we all agreed they should be in the samples area. Problem came from far too many forums and far too many shots. If they were to all go into the samples forums, with in an hour they would be on page 5 :-)), but you are correct. The rules do say that, have done for ever :-)).

Anyway, wisely said Harry, wisely said :-))

Harry,

I feel exactly the same as you do. It is a pity that such a great forum like STF used to be, is slowly losing it's beauty due to a bunch of jealous narrow-minded individuals.

Certain types of thread encourage certain types of reaction. Do the people who agree with your post also agree to accept the reactions? Harry, there are many forums on the net for discussing a whole variety of issues. If this is to become anything other than a photographic forum, it should evolve somewhere away from the dpreview photographic site. We don't own this forum, it's attached to dpreview for anyone to visit.

Imho it's acceptable that friends pass messages to each other, or when someone wants to share something extraordinary which has just happened to them in their lives. These things show the strength of community in here, which is quite amazing compared to other forums I have seen. I'm off to Budapest in a couple of weeks, I see some photos from there and ask the poster for advice - and get a response far beyond what I could have expected. I like that about this place.

However, we have to draw lines somewhere. Should we start directly posting about our holidays, hotels and airfares? Can we discuss current affairs, news and politics? How about pornography? We need to draw a line somewhere, which is why all community forums are split up into different sections of interests. Now I agree that some things are of no importance and should be left alone, but any discussion which may provoke strong opinionated responses could lead to heated debate. Do you really not mind if that became a regular in this forum?

Well... I am just one member, and the above is just my opinion. To be fair, I think it's rare that these things happen any way. Most of the contributors to this forum do avoid OT issues of contention. I think the recent squabbles might be because of the tension surrounding the US election, and I don't expect it to last as that becomes history.

First off, I don't believe STF ever used to be a forum that had a steady post of non-sony camera shots. I've been reading dpreview much before I actually joined it. So that is my opinion of what I saw.

This comment can really work both ways, is it not ? Everyone likes to provide a justification of what they seem right or what is appropriate for them. Both camps have merit in their argument - this accusation is somewhat degrading to the other camp, without solid reason, wouldn't you say ?

I know, I've been spending less time here lately too and I've stopped posting pics because I don't want to get into the issue of DSLR pics being posted in the Sony forum. How do you like hte FZ10? It looks like an interesting camera.
