I realize this is not a printer forum but I was curious if anyone using this printer, the canon i960 which I bought about a year ago, has had a similar problem. I tried everything to unclog two of the print jets from running the software clean head and deep clean so many times that I used up most of some full cartridges of ink, spraying compressed air on the heads to unclog them, and then finally even tried soaking the print head in hot water for 15 mins. None of this helped and it is still clogged. Fortunately I contacted canon and they are going to replace the print head free of charge even though it is a little past the warranty period.

I read one sore on the web that suggested you should print at least one 8X10 print a day and run the print head cleaning program once a week to prevent the heads from clogging up. I have an older hp photosmart 1215 printer that I have never had any problems with clogged heads and I certainly did not print photos everyday or run the head cleaning program except when I had to.

Is your printer located in an area where the air is very dry? If it is, you might just want to print a page once a month that will fire all the nozzles in the print head. No need to actually print an entire photo on a page. You might also want to move the printer to a location that is more humid...like the basement.

The HP probably never clogged because everytime you replace a cartridge, you're also replacing the printhead. With the i960, you're only replacing the ink, the printhead remains.

maybe its not he head that's clogged ....

might be a more general failure of the printer itself

I think you may have a valid point here, and thanks for your reply.

I guess I will find out since Canon is sending me a new print head, but if it is a general failure then it only involves two of the cartridge colors and not the others, and it would be fairly disappointing to have a printer fail after just one year since our use of it is not all that heavy. I certainly don't print out most of the digital pictures that I take.

I would print a page with color on it in draft mode once a day. Something like The Washington Post or ESPN's website page. Draft mode, otherwise, you're wasting a ton of ink. I would not print an 8x10. 8x10's cost $2.00 after everything is said and done.

You don't have to do an 8x10 every day. That's nonsense. You should just do a nozzle check pattern every few days, or at least a couple of times a month. The nozzle check pattern excercises every nozzle while at the same time telling you if some are clogged.

I had an S900 head clog up and cleared it by using a syringe mated to a piece of vacuum hose from a car engine. The syringe forced water through the jets and this actually cleared the clogged nozzles. You might want to give it a try on the old head if you still have it.

I've since kept the head in shape by regularly doing a nozzle check pattern and haven't experienced further problems. That was 1 1/2 years ago.

If after one or two regular cleanings and then a deep cleaning your head is still clogged don't waste anymore ink, call Canon for another printhead. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for why Canon printers clog. I consider myself a long time Canon user and I use InkJet Goodies Ink with my i960. My s9000 clogged quite often. . I traded it for an i960 and after a year or so, so far so good. If you do the math Canon ink is more expensive that $150.00 a bottle champagne. I have found if you like to refill your own cartridges that refilling the Canon oem cartridges works the best So like I said don't waste your ink. Do a nozzle check once a week and that should help keep those jets clean. Btw there is a wealth of knowledge here on the printing forum.

Canon cartriges are super easy to refill. I use my i960 with refilled cartriges for "proofing," and run Canon cartriges in my i9900 for any commercial prints. Saves me a ton of money.

And no, I have not had any clogs, but I do print on both printers at least a couple times a week.
