Nikon 80-400mm

I could not agree more. I have had mine for 2 weeks now and it is proving to be a revelation, especially for small British Birds in dull light. Thanks for specifing which 1.4x multiplier you use. I was not sure and will now add this at a later date.

I use the 80-400 VR with a Kenko TC 1.4x 300 PRO, auto focus and VR
both work just fine. While I have no experience with the Nikon TCs
it is widely reported that the 80-400 VR loses both the AF and the
VR functions with them.

Making pictures with this lens is so easy. I was so suprise that with
combo 400mm+TC 1.4 (total 840mm) I was able making pictures
at 1/30 sec from hand.!!!. I use manual mode ( take a second to
have object in focus) , auto ISO and VR on . Only when there is
lot of light and I have time I use auto focus . Birds do not
want to wait that is why I use manual focus.

I love this lens also. I use it a lot for sports (soccer) when I am too far away from the action. However, I wish Nikon upgrade this lens with AFS to give it a faster AF.

Slightly OT but I often wonder between this 80-400 and the 70-300, which lens Nikon will upgrade to AFS first. They may not do the upgrade for a while since they already have the 200-400VR-AFS and the 70-200VR-AFS, but these 2 lenses are really for the high end pro's who also need the high aperture speed.

I tried to get a TC for my 80-200AFS as an emergency backup if I leave the 80-400 at home. None of the TC except Nikon's will maintain autofocus. But as you mention, the Kenko will work with the 80-400VR. Then of course I have a 300 F4 that would require yet another, since the Kenko's won't work with it and the newer Nikon TC required for the 80-200 won't work with it, I need an older Nikon TC.

After awhile, you end up with a bag of TC.

I think you'll find the 200-400mm VR AF-S is the effectively the AF-S upgrade - together with a whole heap of other better features of course. Okay, so not so much an upgrade, but a totally new lens. However, I can't see them upgrading the 80-400mm or 70-300mm in a way that would compete with the 200-400mm.

The way I read Nikon's strategy is that the AF-S silent wave motor is used almost exclusively for the "pro" lenses, especially on the longer glass.

...the 80-400 when at 400mm has an f/5.6 which far exeeds the critical minimum fro AF and VR to work which is f/4

Kenkos description...

"A professional grade teleconverter designed for ideal use with fixed focal length ultra-telephoto lenses. Works with all Nikon AF-S & AF-D lenses. Will not autofocus with any lens slower than f/4."
The Nikon 1.7 won't fit on the 80-400.

Look at the 18-70 AFS, 24-85 AFS and 24-120 AFS VR - all consumer lenses. I think a 70-200 4 AFS VR or a 70-300 4-5,6 AFS VR (like Canons) will be next.
