My wife delivered a new baby to us last Thursday and I'm currently going through the 400+ photos I took on Days 1-3 of my new girl's life while we were still in the hospital. In the near future, I hope to get some better shots of her while she is still newborn, but for now, I wanted to get your opinion on which of these shots you like better.

This is one of the very few shots I got of her eyes open while we were in the hospital with her. It was taken with the Digital Rebel + 35L lens at 1/160 and F3.2, ISO 400, without flash. In retrospect, I probably should have decreased the shutter and increased the depth of field with a smaller aperture... but I was in and out of various lighting levels and didn't really have time to plan! :-O Ok, here goes:

PHOTO 1: Original image converted from RAW using Photoshop CS with camera defaults.

PHOTO 2: Same as above but with a bit of positive exposure compensation and a slight change in color during conversion. I really don't know whether I prefer the warmer tone or a more corrected color balance (an even more corrected one is below).

PHOTO 3: Heavily corrected version done in post-processing in CS... is more pinkish than the others and a bit brighter.

PHOTO 4: Used the Midnight Sepia action in Photoshop CS just to try it out. Gives it both a slight sepia color tone and a bit of glow/blurring.

PHOTO 5: B&W conversion after the Midnight Sepia action.

AND here's just another shot at the hospital of my 4 year old son's hand holding the new baby's:

Well, what do you think? I know it's not the best photo in the world, but it's probably going to be my birth announcement picture unless I can come up with something better here at the house very soon. And yes, I removed my wife's finger from the B&W version (poorly done) just for kicks.

Thanks!
Travis

All the best to you and to your family!!!

Regarding the pics, I like number 3. I could also suggest take number three and make it bw

And about the photos, I like the second one as it look more natural and clam. It suit the new born very well.

Congratulations Travis!
My son is 1 month old, so I can definitely relate.
I vote for the second photo. I think it looks the most natural.

Thanks for the congrats, this was our third child but the first without complications during delivery, so we were certainly blessed.

Here's another take on the B&W, do you like it?

Thanks for the congrats and comments. Congrats on your newborn as well! As I said in another reply, this was our third child but the first with no complications during dellivery.

In fact, the box that the child came in was entirely intact and the baby was packaged well. See what I mean:

You have to host it elsewhere and then post the url for the picture here. if the url doesn't end with "jpg" it won't work. I host my pics at Pbase as many others here do.

Looks like someone else already answered your question, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. First of all, thanks for the comment. As for posting photos here, I been using Smugmug.com for about a year now. The folks there have been really great about accomodating bandwidth issues and I like their website very much.

They also have a referral program where you get credit if you refer others who sign up with them. If you are interested in Smugmug, here's my referral link (but don't feel obligated to use it, of course):

I've uploaded some additional photos from the hospital, and here is a link to the full gallery:

http://travisimo.smugmug.com/gallery/263334/1/10406158

And here are some specific examples:

Here's my wife with her mother not too long after we arrived at the hospital. We had a "social induction", so we went to the hospital at 4am to get things started. Note that this one was taken at F1.6, 1/40, ISO 400 and it came out pretty sharp, but that was not always the case and I would NEVER recommend using F1.6 unless you can ensure no subject movement and a steady hand.

Here's my wife about 1/2 hr before the baby's birth. Although my wife can laugh about it now, she was having a major contraction - but notice her mom in the background all giddy! LOL. This one was at F2.5, 1/100, ISO 400 and emphasizes her mother's reaction while slightly blurring my wife - that was the intention and I think it looks neat.

Our new baby girl immediately after birth! I really think the flash would have ruined this shot with shadows and the mood. F2.8, 1/125, ISO 400

My wife was very happy to be able to hold the baby right after birth, which wasn't the case with our first two because of complications. You can almost feel the love, no? F2.5, 1/100, ISO 400

Full-length shot of the baby on the warmer, not long after I cut the cord. F2.2, 1/100, ISO 200

Notice my son's reaction here when he first sees the baby! He just couldn't believe that the baby was finally out of mommie's tummy! F2.5, 1/100, ISO 400

Plenty of happy faces on this day, especially grandma's and grandpa's. F2.2, 1/100, ISO 400

A very special cousin who will be getting married next year and having kids of her own sooner than later. F2, 1/60, ISO 400

Beautiful hands! F2.5, 1/100, ISO 200

Leaving the hospital (yay)! F3.2, 1/40, ISO 200

B&W LOOKS LOVELY
Thanks! Which B&W are you referring to - the one in my original post, or the other one in my reply? One was with the Midnight Sepia action and one was not.

Congratulations! And I don't think I have ever seen a baby born with that much hair! She's gonna need a haircut for her 4 month pics! She looks big too, what did she end up weighing in at? My daughter was born June 30th and I couldn't stop taking pictures either. This one was taken with my 50 f1.8 before I had my 35 f2.0. Definetly not her best shot, but one of her first.

Sorry, I got sidetracked. As far as your color pics, I would like a combination of the first two. I actually like the default color straight out of the camera, but I like the extra detail in the hair of the second one. The second b&w you posted was very nice too. I think that would make a great birth announcement!

Thanks for taking the time to share and comment!

Yeah, I was really amazed as I was watching the baby's head come out! She definitely has more hair than our first two. Interestingly, my wife's sister also had a baby about a week before ours and she had a lot of hair too, though her husband is of Asian so that was expected with her.

Not too big, just 7lbs 6oz at birth, which is right between the weight of our first and second.

Nice, these kind of pictures are some of the most important you'll ever take! Do you like the 35/2 better than 50/1.8? I ended up buying the 35L after seeing samples posted here, and though it was a LOT of money, it was well worth it and has become my most-used lens.

Yeah, we're wondering whether to use that one or if we should try to do something else now that we're home. We don't really have any backgrounds to use here at the house, and I don't really want to go to a studio to get a photo taken (I like doing the photos myself). If we get a nice day, we could do something outside, but we're expecting rain the next few days. (scratching head)

Thanks again,
Travis

You could always try a white sheet with a couple of lights--that's what we did.
