Hi!

I'm about to buy my first digital camera and have been looking for a keeper. Too many times in recent months I have gone travelling on a lark, and seen too much that I would have snapped a picture of, if only I had something to snap one with!

The Nikon Coolpix 990 seemed like the cat's meow but it is now discontinued and I cannot find it at any local store. The other two I was interested in were the Pro90 and the G1. I was wondering if anyone had a 30,000 foot overview of the considerations in choosing one over the other. From what I've read, the tradeoff is one of zoom versus optics and imaging performance. I'd love to hear from any owners of either, who considered both, what was your reasoning behind your choice?

Am enjoying the versatility of my Pro90...would be lost without
the longer lens

How about the vignetting-problem?

The G1 doesn't have this problem; Reviews say that the Pro 90 IS DOES have the problem. What do you know about this? Do you have many photo's with vignetting-distortion?
If so, how many (%) and in what circumstances does the problem occur?

Hi, thanks for replying!

W.F. van Norel, my only serious photography is of underwater scenes with my old old Nikon SLR that's now buried under sand somewhere. Vignetting seemed more common with the wide-angle lens I had but almost never used... thanks for the notice on the Pro90, I will take a look at the reviews.

Hi,

You said,...........Too many times in recent months I have gone travelling on a lark, and seen too much that I would have snapped a picture of, if only I had something to snap one with!........ From what I've read, the tradeoff is one of zoom versus optics and imaging performance. ...............

You probably have answered your own questions. I have both cameras. I use the 90 when I require the big zoom, birds, animals, airplanes, normal traveling and photographing of anything. I usually reach for the 90 because the stabilized zoom allows me to get photos in low light situations from the back of a poorly lit autitorium that are usable without using a flash.

I use the G1 when some macro capability is needed or when I think I desire the best quality. Mostly because I can reason that the G1 with more pixels and a less compromised lens is going to be better in protraits and the like.

In actual use making comparisons of identical things with the same lighting and making printed and on screen images I really can't see any difference. The biggest deciding factor is if the long zoom is going to be of use. You won't be disappointed with the images from either camera. They are fine machines.

Good luck
Ben
