I love this brand new search thing released today by Google. Give it a try folks - you'll like it.

Search your own computer

Google Desktop Search is how our brains would work if we had photographic memories. It's a desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed. By making your computer searchable, Google Desktop Search puts your information easily within your reach and frees you from having to manually organize your files, emails, and bookmarks.

After downloading Google Desktop Search, you can search your personal items as easily as you search the Internet using Google. Unlike traditional computer search software that updates once a day, Google Desktop Search updates continually for most file types, so that when you receive a new email in Outlook, for example, you can search for it within seconds. The index of searchable information created by Desktop Search is stored on your own computer.

In addition to basic search, Google Desktop Search introduces new ways to access relevant and timely information. When you view a web page in Internet Explorer, Google Desktop Search "caches" or stores its content so that you can later look at that same version of the page, even if its live content has changed or you're offline. Google Desktop Search organizes email search results into conversations, so that all email messages in the same thread are grouped into a single search result.

Grand! Now all of us with always-on internet connections can be SURE that google knows what's on our computers all the time! Whee! By simply using a small text index file to sum up your computer for "it's own use" it probably uploads all your infos to the internet on a regular basis!

If it makes your computer "easier" it's probably spyware/malware/hackware

9. What about my privacy? Does Google Desktop Search share my content with anyone?

We treat your privacy with the utmost respect. The Google Desktop Search program does not make your computer's content accessible to Google or anyone else. You can learn more by reading the Desktop Search privacy policy.

Google was pretty good several years ago, now whenever I do a search I have to wade through pages and pages of cr*p, like Kelkoo and other shopping sites, etc, many of which have absolutely no relevance whatsoever to what I searched for.

I'm not sure how this will help personal searches unless it is specifically a keyword search. Graphics [such as the libraries we all have as photographers] are immune to standard searches unless there are filename descriptions, etc.

I dunno, sort of a waste of time. As long as my firewall kills any outbound connection from Google Desktop... I don't care about it trying to send data, it won't happen. But I have too many files that start with DSC.

I may try it, but if anyone else does, feel free to post what your experience is.

Altavista had a desktop indexing program a few years back, and there are others out there, but DT Search is the most comprehensive I've found and if you work from your PC like I do and treat file folders as a "database", it's a goldmine. I use boolean searching all the time scanning hundreds of thousands of files (resumes)...I'm a recruiter. http://www.dtsearch.com/

Yeah it increases their search capabilities! Now if a file is no longer on the internet, it's probably on somebodies PC out there right? :)

Given Phils very dim view on gmail offers, surely this thread is sailing pretty close to the wind to being deleted ? I mean, what has this thread got to do with photography at all ??

John

While it has nothing to do with the D70 per se, useful indexing engines are useful for photographic archives surely. I have been doing to some testing and have found a new way to locate my photo archives in a very fast way.

Phil may ban the thread, that is his perogative. I posted the original thread because I found the tool useful and relevant.

I own a Mac, I can already easily search my computer, move files around, and search all sorts of ways.

And as an added bonus, in the upcoming version of OSX, you'll be able to create smart folders, that will automatically capture the results of a search, and update it all the time. Think of it as a continous search results you can access any time, and keep it as a folder on your desktop.

I'm amused by all the "theories" regarding google. You'll probably get a kick out of this site:
http://www.google-watch.org/

It's plain to see if you read between the lines, google is clearly a neo-con data mining and mind control project. Right.
