Hawaii Big island Shots

Hi Philip,

We are going there on vacation in about three weeks. I can't wait and especially after seeing your photos. I like the Chain of Craters ocean shot, the Real Waterfall, and the Saddle Road shots.

Judy

I did enjoy - very much. They all made me want to go to Hawaii, but if I had to pick two favorites they would be 7572A, the footbridge (incredible sky and reflection and wonderful composition with the bridge bringing the eye into the scene) and 7676A, one of the saddle road scenes which is also composed perfectly to my eye.

Thanks for sharing.

If you get the chance, be sure to check out the black sand beach in Punalu'u. If I remember correctly, this is the last black sand beach left on the Islands.

Hi Judy,

Yes, Saddle road was just great although we were advised not to take it back to the Kona side since it can be foggy and has lots of curves but it was fine. They advise you that it requires "1 hour of concentrated driving" but I found it enjoyable. We found Hilo wanting....It doesn't really have a tourist shop area for strolling and shopping, at least that we found, although the population is much higher than the Kona side.

The Real Waterfall is in a state park, Akaka Falls, the $8.50 waterfall is up the road and privately owned and not really that spectacular.

Drink lots of REAL Kona!

Thanks so much,
Philip

Thanks Dave. I will definitely want to go to the black sand beach. I printed this out and will take it with me in my information pile.

Hi Philip,

Funny you should say that about Hilo. I have been reading my tour book for months trying to decide how long to stay where, and it seemed like for photography and pretty and interesting places, that there is much more to do in the Hilo area than in Kona. My husband is very interested in volcanos and I am interested in anything photo worthy. I think most of the waterfalls are shown around the Hilo area. I figured my Hilo time would be spent photographing and my Kona time would be spent snorkeling and laying by the pool. I could not decide so I just went for four nights in Hilo and then four nights in Kona.

Hopefully I can talk my husband into the Saddle road drive.

A black sand beach is a unique experience. I hope you get to see it. Be sure to post photos for us when you get back :-)

If you were going to Maui, I'd give you other suggestions on what to see...

Here is a (poor) picture of the beach Dave suggested which is a black sand beach. There were signs warning not to actually go on the beach because green turtles were using it as a resting spot, although we didn't see any. Also if your interested the Coffee Plantation we visited which was very interesting and free was called Holualoa and is located south of Kona on Highway 180 between 11 and 190.

Hope that helps!

Philip

Thanks for the info Dave and the photo Philip. I will definitely add this beach to our list.

Dave, we've been to Maui several years ago (honeymoon actually), and Kauai a few years later. We decided to try something different this time. My husband likes volcanos so we choose this island.

Maui did have a black sand beach as I recall, but not nearly as pretty as this one.

That's the beach. Ahhh... brings back memories. Sand crunching between your toes. There was a turtle there when I was there, but the beach wasn't closed. Quite crowded, actually.

The plantation you mentioned sounds like the place I stopped at, too.
