G1 and USB hub - yes/no?

The user's manual states: "Connect the USB cable directly to the camera and computer. A connection through a hub may not operate correctly".

I'm curious - is this a real problem or is Canon just covering their a* es with this statement? I just got the G1, my computer has two USB ports, and I already have a printer and a scanner plugged into USB. I plan on getting a hub to prevent the constant unplugging/pluggin of the other devices.

If necessary, I can plug the other two into the hub and use the second one on the computer for the G1 cable, but I sure hate climbing around to the back of the computer on my knees all the time, so would like to use the hub (easily in reach) for the G1.

Bottom line, will the G1 download through a hub vs. directly to the USB port in spite of the wraning in the manual? TIA

I have been using my G1 through a powered USB hub since I started using the camera with no problems.

Yes, it is a CYA move on Canon's part. They just don't want to guarantee that it will work. Everyone I know, myself included, runs the G1 through a powered USB port. The key here is POWERED.

I use a powered hub, but I've never bothered to connect the power and it works fine with the G1.
Shaun.

Well, that's 5 yes'es and 0 no's - sounds pretty conclusive. Thanks very much for the replies - things usually aren't this clear cut.

Regarding powered vs. non-powered, all the hubs I've been looking at (all also in the $20 range) are configurable to be self-powered or powered from the computer. My understanding is that the only limit is if your computer's port doesn't have the extra power necessary to handle the extra load of the additional ports, in which case you simply use the hub's built in power supply.

Thanks again!

You need to be carefull with self powered hubs. Not only do these hubs take a little power, but the power rquirements build up with every device you attatch. I've heard of a few USB ports dying from this, so I'd suggest using a powered hub (and plug it in if at can be used both ways).
