Canon SD200 just purchased off the shelf

These look pretty good!

I just downloaded the indoor classroom. It looks like the room is pretty dark (since someone is doing a slide presentation), yet the video is very noise-free! Significantly better than my old Fuji F700 which was pretty good already (considering this is video from a compact digicam.)

Approximately 1.3 MB per second, about what I expected. The atrium shot looks great too (to be expected since there is much more light.)

The indoor shots look good too. The non-flash was exposed at 1/15 second, and was pretty clean (just some blur due to longer exposure time.) The flash shot looked good.

The macros looked fine too.

The main problem exhibited with the still images was corner sharpness, but of course we all know about this already.

Looking forward to getting my SD200. Thanks for posting the samples!!

Thanks alot for these video clips this seems to be better then most cameras when it comes to indoor videos. There is some noise in the darker classroom setting but it was alot better then i thought and even better then what some consumer camcorders produce very impressive indeed. Sound was adequate it's only 11khz 8bit sound but you can clearly hear what people are saying. Overall very impressive for such a small camera.

Is there any redeye issue with this camera ?

It would also be nice to get a wider shot of an indoors room from this camera.

Is it possible to fix the ISO setting before using the camcorder mode or is it forced to Auto. I would like if the iso stays the same during the whole video so there is not any brightness shifts going on in the picture. Though it was much more subtle then on for example Nikon Coolpix 3700.

A few answers:

No, you can adjust FPS (15, 30) 60 on 320 res. You can adjust white balance (which actually helps I think). And the effects (night, bw, sepia, etc...) no Iso setting on video.

Red-eye: I did see some red eye when I took flash shots from far away (50 ft). That's been the only time and it was very dim.

The classroom video wasn't too dark actually. I'll get another indoor movie sometime with different lighting.

Ok sad that ISO can not be fixed because that would have eliminated the changes of brightness in the videos. Ok looking forward to an even darker video.

What is your opinion of the camera now that you have had it for some days. Is it a camera worth keeping ?

Is the lack of manual focus annoying ?

Bengance, what kind of SD card you use? I order IXUS 30 yesterday, with 1GB SanDisk regular card. Will this card work properly in unlimited movie mode? I'm afraid, that I need faster card for it...

I just picked up a SanDisk 512 MB. I've had no problems recording or reading. No lags, no waits.

I've also noticed that Quicktime plays the AVI better than Window Media Player, but that could just be the hardware of the computer I was using.

The ISO can't be changed but the exposure adjustment can. Also, the white balance can be set for video. I'll experiment somemore, but I think that this really helps.

My opinion is the camera rocks. I'm more of a novice playing with the new features so for me it's a great balance of customization and auto settings. It can be just point & shoot, or you can do some manual changes and use the Focus lock, Exposure lock, long shutter mode, etc...

Also, the continous shooting mode is good. With flashes each photo is a has a 1-2 second delay, but without flashes its almost instant.

Thank you, Bengance, I was afraid that I should get SanDisk Ultra II, and I'm glad to hear that regular card work fine!

The samples you post was very interesting to me, my SD200 will be delivered after 2weeks, so 2weeks I will look at the samples.....

Is there any way to turn of the zoom-in function when reviewing the pictures on the cameras LCD ?

Nothing wrong with those.

I think that there are good reasons for that. First of all, the zoom motor noise would be caught by the microphone. Also, the focus may be lost when zooming. By the way, is AF also locked at the start, or does it adjust continuously?

Another problem preventing useful zooming in videos is that the zoom isn't smooth, but only has few steps. On the SD300 I recently tried it also visibly (and irritatingly) jerked back and forth on every zoom step. Is it the same on your camera?
The white balance is completely off here. I could imagine that maybe you measured the white balance without flash, but then took the picture with flash? This cannot produce the desired result. To correctly set custom white balance for flash shots, you need to first set the flash to always fire.

Have you taken those using a tripod? Otherwise they won't reveal too much information about sharpness.

What's the point? It's quite obvious that the camera does not focus at such close range unless you enable macro mode.

One thing I would be most interested in would be a scene which provokes purple fringing (like crumpled aluminum foil or leaves against high light) shot using all available zoom settings, so we could see how much the fringing is reduced or even removed when zooming in.

There is a display button that toggles between three different settings when reviewing: LCD on with some info (Pict #, size, quality), LCD on with more info(Manual, ISO setting, White balance, histogram, etc...) or LCD with no info. While reviewing you can just move the zoom switch back and forth to zoom in and out. You can lock in at that zoom by hitting the "set" key and switch between pics at that magnification. You can also just move around the picture if you don't hit the "set" key.

If you have the camera on taking pics, and then move the slider over to play/view pics, the lens will be extended for about a minute--it will then retract if it stays on "play/view". If you just turn on the camera in play/view mode, the lens will not extend.

There are also three display settings when taking pictures: LCD off, LCD just view, and LCD with view and picture settings displayed.

I hope this answers your question.
