Mr. Askey:
It appears that you have done some testing recently on your forum board.

Would I be right in assuming that one of the changes you have made is to be able to selectively lock out posts coming from certain IP addresses when that message is posted in reply to messages which you have designated?

I tried several times to post a reply to Richard Le re his question of blue in images from his 950?
After each attempt to post my reply I got the message:
"message deleted"

I am very dissapointed if you have made this associative, selective lockout as I believe that I have as much right to express my opinion as the next guy.

Not if it annoys the hell out of everyone in the forum.

It makes no sense to "lock out" by IP address...for instance, messages from computers in academic computer labs and public libraries can have the same IP address but may not be authored by the same person.

Many more legitimate methods of positive ID...like used by the CNN forums. Techniques are very effective in rooting out abusers but don't trample on personal rights.

I've been noticing some strange behavior on the system as well. I started a thread in the Canon forum which had about 11 replies. (Seemed to generate some debate, but I thought it was above board - not a flame war. I logged on from home and added another message, but now on the PC from work it seems those new replies are not appearing and no amount of "refreshing the list" seems to make them appear. I don't think I've been "locked out" - I think something quirky is going on - bugs inthe system.

I hope Phil will check this out..

I hope you are right that it is simply a problem with the system, but I am beginning to wonder as I just tried to post a reply to the message I mentioned above - with the same result!! If you see this post, it would lead me to suspect that there is some sort of selective lock-out taking place. I know that I am not particularly popular with some who visit this site inasmuch as I have raised some negative issues regarding the Nikon 950 (and a few other models) but I also don't regard this as a flame war - I have tried my best to maintain my decorum. (even when I come across such opening messages as "Fred's brain farts".

Hi Fred,

I would seriously doubt that you'd selectively be not allowed to post to the forum. Especially if the "Brain Farts" comment got to stay. From the posts I've seen, Phil is a fair guy.

For some reason, the last few days I've also had some problems posting to threads (I'm a very infrequent poster, and a happy 950 user to boot, so I don't think that it's Nikon dissent that's the problem! ; ) ) or even finding threads that I just want to keep track of because of interesting content.

(speculation) I wonder if it has anything to do with the cookies I've all of a sudden had to allow or deny- I get two per page whenever I surf on this site. I have cookies turned off because I don't want my hard drive being filled up by stuff I don't need.

Just a theory.

Just speculation but could the addition of the search engine for the forums be the cause. In the news letter 2 weeks ago Phil indicated that there would be a search engine added to the forums by about now. Then again he also mentioned a blocking method. I have noticed a marked decrease in the numbers of posts in the Canon forum although that could just be due to the lack of hot topics, which appears will change very soon. Here is what Phil wrote:
Forum updates
=============

Those who spend any time on the Canon forum will have noticed "Mad
Ken" who seemed to spend the whole of his depraved life standing on
a Nikon soapbox and telling everyone the S10 was only good for the
trash, amongst other things he replied to his own posts and even
impersonated me... A few good emails to his ISP and some new
blocking code put a stop to him. Well, at least I thought so.. in
the end he got through about five different ISP's before I finally
blocked him for good.

I'll be adding a (much requested) forum search engine sometime next
week (hopes) so you'll be able to search the VAST knowledge base of
information in there (some 35,000 posts).

Fred,
Its ok now, just don't know why it couldn't before. Anyway try yourself again.

I will hold my apology in abeyance until I get a clearcut answer from Mr. Askey.

It seems that I still cannot reply to the message (but for whatever strange reason the system allowed me to post an empty ('testing') message.
Mr. Askey - can you give me a straight answer?

Hi Fred,

Don't know you or know what you posted. It seems you have created a litle unwanted noise. If cyber crowds gather, serial noise makers seek them out for their own agenda. It is a comon problem online, I think if you post general suggestions, all will be fine....if that is the problem!

I have just had a brief exchange with Mr. Askey (or an associate - it's not completely clear) and have been assured that my inability to post a reply to the message which I have mentioned is simply a system error that is being traced down. That being the case, I will once again issue an apology to Mr. Askey and ask him to forgive my sensitivity on this issue.
