Hello,

I am planning on purchasing a D1x. I was wondering if anyone (present D1 users) could tell me if they can attach there D1 to an external firewire hard drive (like the pocket one, LaCie, etc.) and save images on it? That way I do not have to rely on those compact flash cards. I will be using the D1x in somewhat of a studio environment so it would be possible to lug around the tethered hard drive.

Thanks

It would appear that not all IEEE 1394 devices are created equal as the D1 will not work with all devices. I would call Nikon tech support to check any specific IEEE 1394 support.

Normally this is done by connecting the D1 to an entire computer running Nikon Capture or (more recently) Bibble. The Toshiba Libretto is a very compact computer that isn't that much larger than an external hard drive. No idea how hard it is to get it to work with the D1.

It is possible (probable) that a hard drive designed to connect through a PC Card slot could be adapted to the D1 if you could find the right adapter. I have adapters for putting a microdrive into a PC Card slot. Perhaps there is an adapter for the reverse connection. It sounds like a crazy way to use the camera, but it seems to me it would likely work.

Well, you really started me thinking about this. Why shouldn't we be able to hook a 20GB hard drive up to a D1 and let it hang out the back?

About 20 minutes work with Google and AltaVista found me:

I have no idea whether there are other similar products.

Who is going to spend $60 to try this thing out with a D1?

Hello everybody,

I have a new Sony Vaio XG700 and it cames loaded for digital and video imaging. I connect the Ieee1394 cable to it and the images show up on the screen as you shoot. This is with the D1 and Capture 1. I actually purchased it for the D1x I am waiting for. But tested it on the D1 as a precaution.

I also use it in the field to download from Lexar flash cards using a Pc adapter but find I need the Hood Man computer cover outside to see the screen well. Could also have a 14 foot Ieee cable as well for field work. But find flash cards allow more freedom of movement.

It also has the ability to burn CDs in the field which is a quick and painless operation so it would work like a charm in a studio setting and allows you to see the image on screen a beautiful 14.1 inch one.

Its the portable in the family but I would transfer everything from a burned CD to my main computer for working on the files.

It was all necessary as I photograph murals and take about 800 to 1000 images at a time.

Jamie,

This is a feature I would welcome also .. No, you can't connect
a portable HD via FireWire and download direct from the D1.
Its a question I asked at the old NikonUSA forum about a year
ago ..

To me it would have been a much more useful feature for a
pro camera than GPS .. or is it GSP .. whatever .. does anyone
see a need for that on a camera?

The laptop is the way to go. Get Bibble or Capture and tether it to a orange micro firewire card in the laptop. It works great. I have tried this combination in a number of laptops and it worked in all with only minor trouble. If the laptop has a built in firewire port you must disable it to use the orange micro card. Orange Micro makes the best firewire cards for laptops.

About the only use for GPS is to record the geographic location for travel or insurance work, maybe for scouting locations for construction projects. Whatever the use, it sure seems to be a wierd concept.
