Hello, i bought Ixus 40 a few days ago and i have to say that the camera is a SPEED DEMON. I am not very satisfied with image quality though, it seems the small sensor and lens dont have much resolving ability. You can read more about it here : http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=10522687

So i wiil wait for the next S series with the DIGIC II hoping that there will be a model with LESS than 8 megapixel! Digic II means SPEED in everything (focus, writing, playback etc) and 640x480@30fps video.

HI..

I thought you mentioned it is a good camera Ixus 40 and it is already Digic II.

If I can wait till end of this year, you are saying better to wait for S series with Digic II?

At the moment I am looking for S1 IS but I can wait till end of this year or Mid Jan 05 Max. Hopefully they are releasing replacement of S1 IS (which I doubt they will release it till this date but who knows hehe...)

Are you happy with the movie recording function?

I am sure the image quality is not too bad. But you rate over 4 out of 5. So you are saying not good?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear image quality wasn't everything you were hoping for...

I was a little surprised to see Canon's own samples on Bebit seemed better from the SD20 than from the SD200 & SD300 to me :

However, from what you say the SD300 still sounds like quite a good camera: portable, responsive and well-built... maybe these compensate for a slight lack of resolution?

I am interested in the SD300, the only thing that will be an issue for me is the tiny SD cards. I find them too small to handle many times throughout the day.

You mentioned you are not satisfied with the image quality. Why? What are your concerns?

Thanks

Is Canon S1 IS DIGIC II?

History has shown that the Sxx series (S400, S500 etc.) is refreshed around February. Sometimes very early February, once was early March I think.

Of course there's nothing stopping them throwing it out there as a nice Christmas present for us!

:)

A fixed focal length lens is certainly much simpler and has less elements than a 3x zoom lens. Therefore it might be much easier to tune for sharpness and reduction of lens artefacts of all kinds. However, the SD20's sensor is even more cramped with pixels than the one in the SD300, and who wants to do without optical zoom nowadays?

Well, that's certainly the point of these sub-ultra-compact cameras. If the SD200 proves to perform better than the SD300 in terms of noise and purple fringing due to the lower pixel density of its sensor, it may be the best choice in this class.

How do you know it's DIGIC II on the SD300? Just want a confirmation because this is exciting news indeed. Canon cams produce the best colors but I wish the focusing is faster and more reliable. :)

An optical zoom is nice, but given the choice, I personally wouldn't trade it for image quality

IMHO The flash on these ultra-compact cameras is too weak to make much use of telephoto capabilities indoors

Outdoors... maybe I'm weird but I prefer to use Prime rather than Zoom lenses, and my wide-angle lenses get much more use than my telephotos... though these are all just my own feelings and I'm sure other people will think differently

Whatever, maybe we should wait for a few more reviews before we pass final judgement on the SD300, and even if the resolution does prove to be a bit lacking, as you say its portability/versitility may still make it a class-leader and worthy of consideration

(though I'll probably stick with my SD10 and wait for the next generation.... 2X optical zoom but with large max aperture/ high resolution/low PF/low distortion and IS? Not likely but I can dream! :-) )

Sorry i meant S 30/40/45/50/60/70 sereies when i am reffering to S series. Not the SD 300 etc (those are called the ixus models in europe).
