Canon, why so cheap?

Granted, I paid $2,300 for my D60, but at least it came with a double battery charger and the AC Adapter in the box. My new 20D (which I love, by the way) came with a little plug in charger and no AC adapter at all. I went to clean the sensor (yes, lots of dust) and was quite surprised to see no AC adapter in the box! Optional? Are you kidding me? Fortunately, I never sold my D60 (and probably never will), so I still have my double charger and my adapter. I know it must save Canon some money, but I would have been pretty p*ssed if I had bought the 20D, found a bunch of dust on the sensor and had to either rely on battery power or cough up for an adapter. Just my two cents.

Mine came with an AC charger, what would an AC Adapter do that an AC Charger wouldn't do?

Also, look at the price of the 20D, I consider it a bargin anyway.

Why? You can rely on battery power, I'm glad Canon don't charge me 25,- for an adapter I'll never need...

The can also keep the discs, the strap and the cables btw.
 
and have them reship the package with AC adapter. I'm sure they will be glad to do it.

Tell you what, I like the charger of the 20D. This is truly a portable travel charger. For those that have not seen it, it has a flip out plug and no cables at all. Bascially it plugs directly into the wall and is no bigger than the 10D charger.

I do miss my D30 double charger, but since I'm keeping the 10D, I can charge two at a time and at the SAME time with both chargers plugged into different sockets.

How long does it take to clean the sensor? A battery should be good for a couple of hours. I think many users of a 10D/20D have no real need for an AC adapter, so I would not want to pay for one to be included.

For example, I've had batteries that were supposed to have been fully charged go out on me after a few shots. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the D60 manual specifically warned against using battery power for sensor cleaning and urged users to use the DC coupler. It's funny, most of the replies speak in terms of "I wouldn't want to pay extra for it," but my question was why is not included at no additional cost? Do you mean to tell me that Canon could not have hit that price point if they included the coupler?

How long does it take to clean the sensor? A battery should be good
for a couple of hours. I think many users of a 10D/20D have no real
need for an AC adapter, so I would not want to pay for one to be
included.

Believe me, I consider the 20D to be a great bargain. I'm talking about the DC coupler (I called it an AC adapter because you use it plug into the wall socket), which should be used when cleaning the sensor because you don't want the power to go out with the sensor door open. The D60 manual specifically warned about using batteries for this process and urged the use of the coupler.

I remember the D60 manual warning against that - maybe it's not as big a deal with the 20D. I've had "fully charged" batteries go out in a very short time, and I'd hate to be cleaning the sensor when that happens.

While the D60 had a warning against it, starting with the 10D this warning disappeared and cleaning the sensor with battery power became standard. I've done it many times with my 10D, my Rebel and the 20D. Don't fret about it.

As a matter of fact, if your battery is low and you set the 20D to clean the sensor, the camera beeps to warn you. I suspected it was telling me the battery was low, so I turned it off and inserted a fully charged battery. Beep stopped.

I guess Canon figures that since you can clean the 20D (and 10D) sensors with just battery power, most people won't need the A/C adaptor. Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal. The D60 was $2300 and it came with a double charger and A/C adaptor. The 20D is $800 less, granted it comes with a less capable charger, but overall it is a better camera. Also, for traveling the small charger is MUCH nicer because it is so compact. It takes about half the space of the 10D charger (because you don't have to worry about the cord) and about 1/4 the space of the D60 double charger.

And the D60 double charger doesn't charge batteries any faster. It charges one battery at a time, so if you watch the 20D charger and swap batteries as soon as they charge it goes just as quickly.

initially i thought the same thing, but then i realized that the battery life of the new 20D battery is much greater than the older type. i thought about it a bit and tried to remember the times i used my adapter. maybe a handful, but the batteries work pretty well. i like the new charger because it's portable. i flashed my firmware on my D60 on a battery and i think the one i got with the 20D is even better. so, i'm happy with the change. cheaper yes, but a problem, not really.

now, put the bg-e2 into the equation and i wouldn't trust it on the battery to save my life.

I love people who read a post like mine and, instead of picking up on the fact that I love my 20D (and my D60) and am just a little bugged about a small issue, decide to write something snappy like "send it back and use the D60." I've spent about $10K on Canon gear in the last two years and love every bit of it. If you disagree with my opinion, fine, but responses like yours do nothing but make you sound like a jerk IMHO.
