What is the optimal DPI for the Canon S800

Want to get the maximum quality out of my S800 but don't want to waste disc space by creating images that are too large but have little added value in image quality

What in peoples experience is the best DPI to use with the S800. I have seen the math to calculate optimam DPI:

Since the S800 resolotion is 2400x1200 and it is a six color printer then optimal DPI is 2400/6 = 400 DPI ??? Is this valid ?

Hi Paul,

I think the best setting with any photo Inkjet is 300-360 dpi, since the 300 divides into 2400x1200 thats what I've been using, I'm sure someone will let us know if thats wrong though

I'm not sure about the S800, but I don't think the 8200 cares. I've tried 300 and 72 dpi image resolution and didn't see a difference for the prints I compared.

I've printed 4-up at around 400dpi (as I remember) and every pixel was faithfully reproduced. It strained my eyes even looking through a small magnifying glass to verify it.

If you print at 2400x1200 on good paper, I would think that 600dpi would be useful to the printer.

On the other hand, the printer has an "image optimizer" feature that can enlarge the image for you.

Another option would be: If you mechanically enlarge, sharpen, then print, then why save the final result? Save the pre-enlarged image and redo the last two steps as needed.

The canon docs mention 49 grades of density this suggests a 7x7 halftone
whence 340 dpi.
I don't have one, the user manual which is on-line says nothing in particular
something so simple seems so buried in verbal noise.

Could you explain how you get 340dpi?
Do you think Canon support will know what is the best dpi to use?
Maybe the Canon engineer who wrote the driver should know.

Just replaced my 8200 with the S800 and love the improvements in the mid tones and saturation. Since the "base" S800 resolution is 1200 dpi, I suggest you select 300 dpi. 600 dpi is overkill. Also, if you're using PhotoShop do not "resample the image" as that interpolates the file.
