Glad to see this, I'm still not convinced that its the camera because my Tamron lens looks like it's doing its jpb. But I must say,-looks- like it.

There is a feeling from day one that something is wrong, that feeling is the strongest with my Sigma 55-200 DC on the 20D...

The 5fps is great, the body is great, the resolution is great. But I can't focus on anything to save my life. I'm doing some more tests today, otherwise it's going back.

I think yours should go back. I'm using the slow 17-85 and it instantly focuses on anything except a blank wall or in very low light.
"not focussing on anything" sounds like a defect to me.
