i got the impression from the website that they are in NYC...is this correct? i may visit when i'm in the states in 2wks. the 17-35L is 25% cheaper than the UK. ...and what do i care if it's not a USA model? :o)

David,

They may not be in the part of NYC you may NOT WANT to visit. Also, they don't seem have a very good reputation. You may find a surprise on your credit card when you get back, for instance.

Watch your step,

Hi,
http://www.bwayphoto.com - broadwayphoto, is grey market company,
If you got anything from theme without buying extra US warranty
you will have no support nor warranty in US provided by Canon.
They have the lowest prices, however they overcharged you on S&H
5% of the value of the products ordered. Other words you are paying
for S&H from overseas covering their expenses.

Good luck.

Matthew:

I would appreciate it if you would post your actual experience in buying from Broadway Photo. Follow up on such a purchase would be valuable to the group.

My experience buying a Canon D30 (not from Broadway Photo, but some equally shady establishment in New York) was that in fact Canon USA will honor a warranty....as long as you have a dated sales receipt and the camera was purchased from an authorized Canon dealer.

When my D30 arrived, it came with box opened and the US warranty card missing. I immediately called Canon USA, and they said not to worry...that the company where I purchased the camera was a "legit" dealer and they would honor the 1 year warranty if I had the receipt.

So what did I do? I called the company where I originally purchased the camera and ordered the 3 year extended Mack warranty for my D30 for $79. (By the way, I am not sure that Mack is an authorized repair center for Canon's digital cameras).

I suspect that the warranty card, if it was not grey market, was removed and used to obtain the 340 mgb ibm disk and BP511 battery for someone else.

Good luck.

When someone offers to sell a product below cost, that should be a warning. No one is in business to loose money. Looking at the reviews, they are near the bottom of the list. I would cancel my order and run from them as fast as I can.

It's gotta be without the USA warrenty at that price or Hot. If you get a non-grey market camera and send in the USA warrenty you'll get a free 340MB microdrive and extra Battery from Canon. I think this is incentive from canon to get people to not buy the Gray Market stuff from the US. In any case if you can use the 340MB and Battery then you might want to look into a non-gray D30 body from someone so you get the Warrenty.

Let us know how it turns out. (Or clarify the Gray market issue with them and order the other.) I don't have to much problem with lens buying on Gray market as there is less to go wrong with them. But you main camera body? I'd be careful.

Oh, PS: Here is a shot I did with my S20 about a year ago. The thing that annoyed me about the camera - though generally it was good for a point and shoot - was the cyan cast everything got. I use a little batch filter and photogenetics to clean them all up. I'm hoping I don't have the same issue here with a Cyan cast. I've seen a lot of threads about the same issue being present on the D30, but with more options for work-arounds.

Here's the pic -it's 7 S20 shots stiched together at one of Londons major Train Stations. I call it "The Lost Tourist". Full - size as printed was 340 Megabytes and 4 feet long.

Good luck on your D30 - I should be getting mine in a couple of days.

Where did you get the extended warranty for $49? Broadway wants $499 for it. I may get a D30 from them and if I do and can get the warranty for $49 I certainly will. For $499 it is a non-starter.

Joe, do what you want, but this company has a very bad reputation by all acounts. Read the other posts.

IF you want to go gray market, then go with a company with at least a good reputation. I have not used nor endorse them, but detainternational seems to have a good reputation dealing in gray market goods. You are risking thousands to save hundreds with a company with a bad reputation, not a good gamble in my opion.

Someone on this thread wanted a narrative on what dealing with Broadway is like so I just wanted to give you my perspective.

Looking at the Computer Shopper site a few days ago I noticed that they had the best price on a Canon D30 by far, only $2179. Of course this is a gray body, but I didn't really care. Even though they had a bad reputation I figured that I would be pretty well covered if I asked my questions by email, ordered by the web, saved and printed EVERY page out. Credit card companies are pretty good at protecting their customers, especially when there is evidence to back up what the customer claims. I ordered the D30 with 2 day FedEx and the shipping was 136.10 for a total of 2316.09. I ordered it Tuesday afternoon so I could take it out this weekend. Their site said that they would ship the same day if the order came in before 4:00pm Eastern time.

Well, the first problem was that when I got home a salesperson had called and wanted me to call him back. This was way to late to get the order out that day because it was 9:00pm Eastern time. I called him back the next day to see what was up and he started in on a medium-pressure selling program to try to get me to add to the order. First was a battery for $79 (no thanks), then an extended warranty "marked down" from $499 to $299 (no thanks), and then a "package deal" of the battery plus the warranty plus a camera bag for I don't quite remember what but it was less than the $299 that he just tried for the warranty itself (no thanks). He was courteous but had a great reason for me to buy each of the expensive options. I was courteous but turned him down on each one. I hung a carrot out that I might buy lenses from him later on. He thanked me for my order. I asked if they could get the package out that day (Wednesday) so I would still get it by the weekend and he said that he was not sure how backed up fulfillment was, so at least he was honest about that. But if they can't get it out the same day after a whole day's delay and notice then that 4:00pm-same-day-guarantee is obviously pretty bogus.

They charged my card that day, for the correct amount. And the camera did come today (Friday), so they did get it out on Wednesday. When I look at the box it is marked "EOS30/(EUR)" and "EOS D 30 Gehause". So I am thinking maybe this was diverted from Germany. No USA warrantee card, but that was to be expected. The box was opened (there is even a little tape left), but that was to be expected also. The package came with everything else promised. Software, 16M CF card, manuals, camera in new condition, battery charger (takes 100 to 240 volts so no problem there), several cables. Only odd thing is the camera is set to PAL video out by default, but that is understandable.

So the best I can say is I got a great deal, money-wise. $2316.09 is pretty damn good deal on a D30. It was not convenient. I know when I order from B&H online their system fulfills the order the same day, most of the time, and I never get a guy calling me on the phone to push more product. So you can make your own decisions based on this information. Of course I still have a gray-market camera that will really prove or disprove its worth over the next year or two, or tomorrow when I take it out.

I'd upload pictures but I got this thing with 10 minutes of daylight left and I am not going to try to get the flash to turn out decent photos without reading the manual. The one picture I took of the FedEx depot looks pretty good to me for a digital camera at 400 ISO with a cheap 50mm EF f1.8 lens (old version).

If I have any trouble with the body I will let you all know. Sorry for dealing with the enemy. I know this encourages them, but it really was too good of a deal to pass up.
