I know I am going to offend many people by this post so I apologize in advance. I have to let something off my chest. I can't stand pictures of sunsets! Everyone sees them. 365 days a year. Just look out your window!! Double that number if you include sunrise. The trick is to use the unique lighting for something special. Don't let it go to waste!

Interesting perspective, nite. Light and its quality sets off subjects in different ways. It isn't the sunset or sunrise in itself that interests you, but how it casts light on a subject? Our museum has an exhibition showing right now on light. May go today. Expect to find it very interesting. Will share any kernels of wisdom that surprise.

I think that sunsets add to a picture, but aren't enough to stand on their own unless they are unusual. Clouds in the shape of the virgin mary? grin Hope you went to the exhibition. How was it?

If you live in a clear cloudless place, that is. But yes, I agree--a few sunsets look spectacular in photos, the rest get boring real fast. But that glorious light might be doing something else interesting, if you think to look around....

Even if I'm up that early, I'm not capable of complicated things like focusing and clicking the shutter....

Yes, we went. It was interesting...light in technology and art through the ages. They had one humongous camera there and I tried to get a picture, but it was low light and the guards were watching with hawk-eyes, so I couldn't. I did get this one of the gift shop with it's "Light" motif for the show.

And this one came from the show. They projected this rainbow on a wall by shining a light into a prism. It was dark enough for me to take it without the guard seeing.

Well when you live in midtown Manhattan, where you're lucky to see the sun at noon, I enjoy seeing this once in a while:

or these colors:

I never see a star in the sky and barely get to see the sun. People like me still very much enjoy seeing the sun rising and setting.

Sorry...

Just took this a few hours ago, it's a bit before sunset though:

Took about 10 shots blind holding the camera out and facing back, hoping for one like this. I have to try doing some work on it, try to remove the power lines, maybe crop a little.

I can understand you, but not in general: sunsets taken by other people are most of the time boring for me, but with my own pictures (e.g. taken during holydays) they bring back the memories and the relaxed feeling I had. And it will be allways something special for me to be for my own watching a sunrise at the beach (no people arround, of cause).
