Just compiled my favourite BiF pics over the last 10 months with my 300D onto this gallery just before I recieve a 20D next week. All manually focused!

I hope that the AI predictive focus on the 20D is as good as people say it is....it will certaintly give me a lot more keepers.

comments welcomed...good or bad

many thanks,

Emyr

Hard to do with the Drebel. Wish I lived in an area with such a variety of birds to shoot. Took some Hawk shots at lunchtime today. Can't wait to get home and see how they came out. Here's a Canadian Goose landing sequence I took over the weekend testing the 20D. Shot against a harsh sun but, you get the idea. Your gonna have a blast with the 20D.

Emyr,

Looks like you have some really nice shots there. You are more daring than myself as I would be afraid to try and manually focus on birds in flight. I have used AF and even had a little luck in the sports mode with the AI Servo. I am watching the D20 as well as I'm looking forward to the separate AI mode for tracking. I lost a lot of pictures last year and hope to increase my keepers with the D20. I'm reading the reviews very closely now. I've learned a lot and hope to continue to learn. Shooting birds in flight is one of my favorite types of photography. Good luck with your new camera and I for one would really like to get your feedback as you get used to it. Cheers, Rod

red tailed kites around here, they look cool.

here's a woodstork taken with the 20d and 400 f5.6L in burst mode using Ai servo, not sure how the rebel's Ai servo would have done here, but without Ai servo an the rebel this whole bird would have been a blur. It was moving almost directly at me and fast. I took about 7 shots in burst and all but one looked just like this.

How's things going down there Rod? Haven't heard from you since hurricane Frances. Hope you and yours made it through ok. We lost a few trees and power for 5 days.

Hey Paul,

We didn't sustain any damage so we are grateful. I went on vacation to Arizona for a week and am still catching up on things. I saw your E-mail just haven't had time to get to them all. Appreciate you checking up on us. Looks like the 20D is working out for you. How do you like the AI Servo?

Great photo...is that an Ibis of some description?

Not an ibis, though i can see how you could make that assumption since they both have black/white wings. It is of the stork family. If we ever get some more sunny weather here in Florida I could get you an ibis inflight taken with the 20d.

here's a white ibis taken with the 400 f5.6L and digital rebel.

seems to be smoother focusing with the 400 f5.6L and 20d than with the rebel. It's hard to tell it's focusing it's so smooth and quiet. I don't have to tell you that 5fps is super fast compared to the rebels 2.5 and 4 shot buffer.

hmm why manualy focused? most of them look rather soft. why not use AF and get the focus right? I never use manual focus for birds in flight..by the time you set the focusing your bird will have moved by the time you press the shutter button.

Is it? did not notice :) guess I have to give it more try then.

I like the kite diving. Where was this shot? I find the contrast maybe a bit too harsh in some of them. Also some have a bluish tint and that does not look right. For exemple, you can really see the purple / blue cast on the feather on this one:

and I would forget about manual focus because it does not seem to work for these photos.

Hi Daniella,

I think we "spoke" a couple of weeks ago when I asked what AF you used with your 1D mark ll.

The AF on a 300D is sim[ply not good enough for predictive focusing (in-fact it doesn't have one) so I had to MF the shots.

Shure, some of them are not quite in focus....but some of these birds are travelling at 30mph (50 kmh) so I had to MF.

Do you still have that wader landing on a rock??...I really liked that one

Nice shots. I really envy your patience in manually focusing all those shots. I couldn't do it. I just recieved my 20d last week. It may be too soon to tell, but it seems that the 20d locks on faster and tracks better than my 300d. Not sure if I've noticed any effect from the AI predictive focus. Perhaps it helped me with the red tail flying toward me shot I'm posting here. I'm not even sure if AI predictive focus is turned on. I need to investigate that. the owners manual seems a little vague to me regarding that. I'm assuming it's always on. Anyway, I really like this camera. You gotta love the 5 fps and the faster buffer.
